hiking 1:55:42 [3] 5.24 mi (22:05 / mi) +154m 20:14 / mi

Twice around the meadow loop (in case I needed to stop after one) with 20lb pack and poles. Not too bad out - not pleasant by any means but my bandana seemed to dry out a bit between swipes of my face so it couldn't have been too humid.

Achilles still a bit sore but there doesn't seem to be much to do about it except continue the heel drops and heel raises and other exercises.

cardio 40:09 [3] 0.46 mi (1:27:19 / mi) +4m 1:25:01 / mi

Stairs. No doubles but wearing 20 lb. pack. Wanted to quit at 20 mins but made it to 40. Pretty mind numbing but better than outside I think.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

SJU class.

cardio 20:00 [3]

Followed by some elliptical. Annoying numbness in the balls of my feet after about 10 minutes. Wonder what that's all about.

Oh boy. Not sure which was worse - carrying the 20 lb pack or the heat and humidity. NAOC sure was a nice break from both of those!!

NAOC sprint. Again surprised by how much fun I had with this despite not running.

orienteering race 29:47 [3] 1.48 mi (20:07 / mi) +26m 19:04 / mi

NAOC club really with Sandy and Karl Ahlswede. I think I started my watch about 4 minutes early. Fun, fun, fun! Even though I was walking it was still a hoot. The event was on a biathlon course so ski trails everywhere and all sorts of animal statues (targets?) just off the trails. Really surprised by how much I enjoyed this. A few small bobbles but clean to most controls.

orienteering race 2:04:26 [3] 3.38 mi (36:49 / mi) +62m 34:50 / mi

This was sad - and I mean really sad. Three times I started looking for my control way early. Compass and pace counting used to be my forte but definitely not today! Probably about 50 minutes of errors! (Actual time was 1:51:xx but I started the watch early and forgot to turn it off right away.) This has got to be one of my worst ever outings!

orienteering race 1:31:19 [3] 3.26 mi (28:01 / mi) +65m 26:22 / mi

NAOC Long. A fun course. Had a decent outing and placed okay given I didn't run a single step. Only one "error" where I misread up from down and got confused when I was expected up and the terrain went down and so I mucked around a bit trying to figure it out. Other than that a few hesitations and a little sloppiness but not a lot of major time lost.

Event: NAOC 2018

orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

NAOC model event. Forgot my watch so this is an estimate. The model terrain was really, really fun although I had a bid of trouble out there. The ground is very squishy and so I kept pulling up short feeling like I had gone far enough when I hadn't. I couldn't keep a decent pace count - just no focus - and that didn't help. But, I was reading the terrain reasonably well and didn't make any huge blunders so that was good. I didn't use any of the trail network but certainly will tomorrow when I can.

I also was having trouble reading the map - even though it was 1:7500!! My eyes have gotten that bad. I had my contacts in but they were somewhat useless. I'm going to go with glasses tomorrow and see what happens.

hiking 1:08:43 [3] 3.08 mi (22:19 / mi) +43m 21:23 / mi

After visiting the Wildlife Preserve and a dog sled farm this morning went for a hike out the door of the house where Valerie, Amy and I are staying. It was a nice pleasant hike in nice pleasant temps. Didn't have a clue where I was going, just kept following trails that seemed to go in a direction that seemed interesting.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Class at SJU. I liked today's format: ~6:30 mins cardio, ~6:30 mins upper body, ~6:30 lower body, ~6:30 abs with a minute rest between each instead of everything all mixed together. Not sure why I liked it but I felt like I could push harder.

cardio 20:00 [3]

And surprised myself by doing 20 mins elliptical after class.

hiking 2:38:08 [3] 6.44 mi (24:33 / mi) +201m 22:23 / mi

Sweatfest. 20lb pack, boots and poles. Last 15 minutes were a real struggle.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Class at SJU. Plus two hours of very sweaty yard work in the morning.

hiking 2:14:27 [3] 4.66 mi (28:51 / mi) +351m 23:22 / mi

Setting up a new computer is not fun. Slowly finding all the software I need to install. Got about as much done as I could stand and went out for a hike. Heavy pack, poles. Didn't feel muggy but I was still dripping when I finished.

Friday Aug 3, 2018 #

Note

Woke up very sore in my shoulders and chest and couldn't figure out why until I remembered I did 20 pushups (two sets of 10 with lots of other things in between) with hands on a Bosu ball in class yesterday. Ooof. Haven't down pushups in ages.

Note

Well this is unfortunate - the SVO Stumble and the Harriman Festival are the same weekend. :( On the other hand, what a nice problem to have - two exceptional events to chose from!

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Class at SJU followed by an hour and a half wasted in Philly traffic going to the UPS office where they would not give me a package addressed to USA Orienteering at my address since I had no "proof" that my home address was a business address. They agreed to redeliver it tomorrow - I don't see why bringing it to my address and giving it to me is any different than giving it to me when they see that the address on my driver's license matches what's on the package - but that's what was suggested. Hopefully I remember to stay home when they are supposed to deliver it. It's probaby nothing important anyway.

hiking 1:40:00 [3]

Estimate - hiked over to the post office in Chestnut Hill on the other side of the Wissahickon to mail all the AGM stuff. Could not stop dripping; so humid.

orienteering 24:44 [3]

Then did one of the sprints at the Wilson Farm Park event. It was the last one of the summer and I had never been on that map so it seemed like it might be fun. I power walked the course and only had a couple 5-10 second hesitations or hooks into controls when I wasn't quite on line. Tried jogging twice and both times stopped after about two steps as it hurt my knee.
