orienteering 2:05:00 [3]

Green course at HVO dual event. Had trouble interpreting the map - rocks and other features weren't consistently mapped - and then got tired and wasn't even reading the contours very well. Made several mistakes of several minutes each and lost all motivation several times. But it was a nice day so I kept going and just tried to enjoy myself.

My allergies continue to be a major issue. My eyes and the skin around them in particular are giving me a lot of problems and I'm not sleeping well. Hard to know if the medication is doing any good.

Don't think the climb is accurate. There's way more than 10-15 meters of climb on that hill. A map that I have with contour lines shows about 9 contours and I'm pretty sure it's a 5m contour map.

Anyway, a good workout.

Nice jog/walk around the meadow loop with Sandy. More jogging than I've done in a while and it was hard but at least nothing hurts.

Note

I've had several ideas for my next O project but I think I am settling on designing a HNY2017 course. I think it will be at Hickory Run, that I will put out streamers, that I will ask for park permission and that I will somehow turn it into a US Team fundraiser. This will involve a couple of trips to HR to plan the course and put out streamers, a trip to actually do the whole course, and then a trip or two to take down the streamers. A lot of driving but a lot of time in quality woods.

Note

I'm slowly finding some solutions to my eye issues. I've been trying various antihistamines and have found a couple that significantly reduce the tearing and itching. I'm reluctant to take them long term though so not sure if this is a good solution.

hiking 55:45 [3] 2.73 mi (20:25 / mi) +94m 18:27 / mi

A quick hike around the meadow loop with Sandy after several hours feeding sticks, hedge trimmings, and other yard debris through my small wood chipper. It churned out enough mulch to cover the newly dug flower bed.

hiking 2:34:13 [3] 5.66 mi (27:15 / mi) +460m 21:45 / mi

Hill repeats behind Valley Green.

Forgot to start my watch so picks up part way. About an extra mile and a bit more climb. Also, a big tree down across the trail close to the bottom of one the hills so I just turned around there instead of fighting my way over a few extra times.

Many mountain bikers out. Most were quite pleasant and shared the trail; two were obnoxious and we exchanged words.

A nice hike on a warm day.

A big tree was down across the trail with the slices cut out down in the creek. Hard to make out but already a nice stone statue is on one of them.

orienteering 1:02:02 [3]

Brown course at Rocky Ridge; MidAtlantic Championships.

Couldn't sleep Saturday night (I'm having all sorts of allergy issues and trying various medications and I some of them keep me awake) but had to get up early Sunday morning to get to Rocky Ridge in time to set up epunching. Amy brought the QOC setup but we had some issues getting the touchpad to work. After a quick call to Valerie and various turning things on and off, the two devices finally started talking to each other and we got epunch registration all set by about 9:30. There were already three buses of kids there (all QOC) but we got them entered rather quickly once we got things rolling. Amy went out on her course and Sam stepped in and helped keep things going - it was really nice to have a second person for directing traffic and crowd control especially since the early runners on WYO were already finishing and going out on second courses and it was nice to have someone answering questions so I could focus on typing things correctly into the laptop. After the QOC bus arrived and the majority of those folks registered, things quieted down and I handled it solo for a while. Kathy finished her course and I got her set and then Amy finished so the two of them handled things while I went out. After I finished my course, it was time to enter the relay teams. That took some concentration and so thanks again to all the people who ran interference for me and answered questions and thanks also to Amy who answered the questions I barked at her without getting upset at my lack of social graces. Had a few glitches with the relay program not printing splits for a while but was able to sort it all out eventually. Everyone was pretty patient and it all got sorted.

In the middle of all that craziness I did run a course. I thought I was pretty focused but I drifted too far north from 5 to 6 and got tangled up in a lot of downed trees and other vegetation - staying higher on the hill and away from the houses was probably faster even though it was rockier. 7 was fine but then I totally lost focus on the way to 8 and got started hesitating and trying to figure out the trails. It would have been faster to either climb high and get on the trails I knew were distinct or just head to the house just north of the area where the control was. Instead, I kept trying to figure out where I was and match up rocks and so on and lost a lot of time (close to 5 minutes). Eventually I did get the house in sight and found the nearby trail, platform and then the control. Ah well.

Long day but lots of fun. Haven't been to too many local events recently and it was good to see lots of O friends.

Meant to help Max with some math homework, but he saw how busy I was with the relay software and didn't bug me.

orienteering 2:04:15 [3] 6.1 km (20:22 / km) +230m 17:08 / km

Red course at Mt. Penn. Pouring rain when I woke up this morning but forecast said it would clear by the afternoon so decided around 10:30 to head on out. Mt. Penn is not my favorite park - it's extremely rocky and the map is quite out of date and I've been on some pretty bad courses out there where they've taken you through some pretty green junk.

But it all turned out great.

It wasn't raining at Mt. Penn and hadn't been so the woods weren't even wet. I guess Philly was getting effects from the hurricane and it just didn't go that far inland.

The terrain was just as rocky as I remembered but the course was great and kept us in nice woods vegetation-wise. There were lots of short legs and no long trail runs although plenty of places to use the trails.

Tried to jog a few times but my various aches and pains convinced me to just keep walking. I was a little sloppy in places and had to stop a few times to wipe my eyes and my glasses (the tearing thing is going on as usual) to read the map, but never made any real big errors.

I'm pretty sore now; all the rocks do take their toll.

Did all my PT exercises plus some core and stretching. I did a few of the exercises each of Thursday and Friday but not the whole set.

hiking 1:40:00 [3]

Hike over to Chestnut Hill to visit the bank and the food coop. Tricky buying only what I could carry in my pack.

Garmin would not upload. I don't understand. The tracks are on the watch and I can upload tracks before and after but not these.

Nice hike at World's End State Park with Ann Leonard. Got lucky and while it was misty it never rained. Very pretty waterfalls. Some of the vistas weren't as spectacular as they might have been on a clear day but it was still a really nice hike.
