Ran the meadow loop. Seemed easier but the time was identical to the last outing. Had to stop and untangle the laces of my shoes - they are the pull and lock type and the tails had hooked each other and I was seconds from taking a bad fall but was able to hop a bit and stop. Looped the tails through the laces so they wouldn't flop around any more. Will need to ponder a better solution.

It was actually reasonably pleasant out - a bit of a cooling breeze.

Not great for my knee (concrete sidewalk) but happy to do the 2-4am shift at Relay.

I drove up after midnight timing my arrival for just before I was scheduled to go and there was a sobriety checkpoint on my way there and everyone had to stop and chat with the trooper for a few minutes. First time I've seen one of those.

Yoga/Pilates 1:00:00 [3]

Morning class with Joe. Did a few things that worked the core; need more of that.

Ran the meadow loop in between thunderstorms - or at least there was one earlier and it sure looks like another one's coming. Felt really awful to start but about half way through got thinking about things and suddenly I was almost done.

Yoga/Pilates 50:00 [3]

Yoga class with Ann. Good class - lots of stretching and strength and worked up a good sweat - but not sure that I'll go back to that particular one. Nice to connect with Ann again - it had been a while.

Meadow loop with Sandy - neither one of us inspired enough to do more than hike.

Yoga/Pilates 1:15:00 [1]

Yoga class with Sandy at the studio Ann recommended. A very nice class - exactly what I was looking for.

hiking 2:27:54 [2] 6.18 mi (23:57 / mi) +256m 21:13 / mi

Nice hike with Sandy. Her Garmin said it was a bit longer. My watch said 5.0 when hers said 5.7 and while her house is a bit further than mine from the corner where we meet, it can't be more than a tenth of a mile at most.

Trail "run" with Sandy. Very slow pace but we stuck to the plan and never walked. Go us!

The pace is a little misleading - but not much - since it includes the walk to and from the trailhead.

It is so bizarre that I can do this and my knee doesn't hurt a bit but this morning going up and down the stairs I couldn't put weight on the leg.

Indian loop with Sandy.

Made an appointment to go see an orthopedic guy at Penn. If nothing else, I should be able to get a new brace.

hiking 50:41 [2] 2.82 mi (17:58 / mi) +85m 16:26 / mi

Same hike as yesterday; I know I was pushing a bit (I was late for something) but surprised to be 9 minutes faster.

Knees were not good earlier this evening but okay now. I am planning some hiking for later in the summer - I wonder if that will be possible.

orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Brought some SJU students to the local event and they decided to try orange. Admittedly, Norristown Farm Park is a fairly simple map with many fields and paths and roads all over, but I was still impressed they wanted to try orange especially after warning them the woods were pretty thick and they had come in shorts. I gave them about a 15 minute head start and then went after them catching them by the third control. We chatted a bit about choosing around routes - especially given their bare legs and the poison ivy I was seeing everywhere - and they caught on quickly. I followed them for a few more controls and then bailed.

I waited for them and they finished with no problems at all and said they had a blast. They definitely want to go again and one of them was all excited about trying to start a club at school or trying to get the Outdoor club to go to an event. Hopefully they won't get any rash from the p.o. (I gave them a supply of Tecnu) and hopefully they won't find any ticks embedded (I gave them strict instructions to hunt carefully for any).

So close to not doing anything when I got home but managed to get myself going and then had a pretty decent workout. I jogged - very, very slowly - the meadow loop from the trailhead and back, just walking the road parts from and to my house. I kept telling myself if I walked any of the hills on the trail I would have to run the road and that was enough to get me up the first two and then I just sort of zoned out and didn't really think too much about the rest of it. I think it is probably the first time I have jogged the whole thing in about a year.

My knees have been pretty good this week considering West Point last weekend. Hopefully this won't be a step back.

orienteering race 1:32:48 [4]

Another pretty physical course but this one wasn't as long. I did have to sit down and slide on my rear to get down a few slopes.

I liked part of this course a lot: 5-6-7-8 was a lot of fun. But 9 was just dumb - I pretty much nailed it, but again, it did not belong on a Brown course. Ah well, the cadets try hard and they do a great job for being college kids.

I volunteered to course consult for them next year if they want me to.

orienteering 2:04:54 [4]

I slogged my way around the course - wasn't particularly fast or clean but didn't make any big errors, just plodded along. Decided quite early to just enjoy the day in the woods and things were going fine until #8. When I saw the control up on top of the boulder I was stunned. I couldn't believe they expected competitors on Brown to get up there. Had there not been a cadet there to help me up and then back down again I would never have been able to punch that control. And then there were some brutal downhills that really took their toll on my knees.

Was pretty gimpy the rest of the evening but ibuprofen helped.

Note

Looks like I'm getting a free flight (courtesy of my fabulous sister) to Italy and then London the last two weeks of June. I'll be starting in Stresa on Lago Maggiore. Any recommendations for hikes or other places to visit?
