strength & stretching 25:00 [3]
weight:122.6lbs

RTP plus the stretching routine which seems to have really helped the funny pull in my leg so I don't dare stop!

I think this short workout plus some abs would be a nice short, sweet workout I could keep doing for the long term. We'll see.

Note

My ipod nano has decided to stop working. I did not realize how much I depend on it to get through boring workouts.
6 PM

walking 49:22 intensity: (3 @0) + (6:35 @1) + (9:43 @2) + (28:02 @3) + (4:59 @4) 0.55 mi (1:28:58 / mi) +1m 1:28:40 / mi
ahr:115 max:137

Combination of stairs and ab workout.

Meant to do the core dvd yesterday but I was so annoyed at the ipod disaster and trying to get the ipod to talk to my computer that I never got to it.

Plan was for the normal stair workout, But on the third set my good knee started hurting so I stopped at the end of that set. And then did a quick ab workout followed by some stretching.
7 PM

Note

And I now have a new mp3 player, a Sandisk sansa clip zip which is really cool and easier to use and I no longer have to fight with itunes. For about a fourth the price.

Sandy A asked if I was interested in a hike toady and I thought, why not? Perfect antidote to yesterday.

Walked out the door and it felt balmy so I took off my gloves and hat and threw them back inside. Had just a long sleeve shirt for most of the hike. Didn't wear my pack. I felt light as a feather. And no soreness (I was pretty sore last night).

strength & stretching 20:22 intensity: (1:56 @1) + (1:21 @2) + (15:54 @3) + (1:11 @4) 0.16 mi (2:07:32 / mi) +1m 2:06:04 / mi
ahr:117 max:136

RTP plus some stretching. I wore the heart monitor wondering if it would be easy to tell when I was doing which exercise.

ahr:106 max:134

A nice hike in the Wissahickon. Decided just to go up and down the hill behind Valley Green as I just wasn't sure what the trails would be like and how well I'd hold up and didn't want to be too far from home with freezing feet.

I'm pretty tired but feel pretty good.

Can't believe how little I needed to wear despite it never getting out of the 20's today. I knew enough not to put on an extra layer after the last few outings, but was surprised that I had to take off the middle insulating layer after an hour or so. Did most of the hike with one Craft shirt and my Gore-Tex shell, long johns and fleece lined touring pants that I had unzipped halfway up my thighs. Did I mention how much I love my Craft shirts and pants? My mittens, headband, hat and neck gaiter went on and off many times as the sun went in and out and the wind blew or stopped, but the headband was a good addition to the arsenal since it's usually my ears that get cold first. And my feet were toasty the whole time.

Was also worried that my water would freeze but I guess I drank often enough that the water in the tube of the Camelbak never froze and the water in the water bottles likewise was fine.

I'm hungry.

Forgot to put on the heart monitor.

Double stairs: 4 x (10' on; 2' off) plus a couple minutes single stairs arm up and cool down.

Wore my pack with a full water bladder and a 5lb weight for ~12lbs total.

hiking 1:27:00 [3]

Snowshoeing in the Wissahickon. Really, really beautiful out with about 9" of light fluffy snow everywhere. Probably would have been fine without the snowshoes but they were fun to use. Did the meadow loop with one down and up on A-hill.

Once again, I was overdressed. I thought 11F would require an extra layer but I ended up sweating and having to take off my jacket and tie it around my waist.

By the time I realized I hadn't put the garmin on, I had already gotten into the snowshoes so just used the stopwatch on my phone.

ahr:108 max:139 weight:123lbs

Long, slow hike in the Wissahickon. Could feel the workout I did last night in my glutes. Was planning to go longer but I couldn't fall asleep last night and got up pretty late this morning so didn't get started as early as I planned.

TNT - walking at the Penncrest track with Sandy and Dasha and then joined by Karl and eventually Clem. Tom was running in the woods. Nice to catch up with everyone.

strength & stretching 20:00 [3]

A bunch of squats, lunges and pushups. I also took the stairs down from and up to my 17th floor room. Also some stretching.

walking 20:00 [3]

Walking back and forth from my hotel to the convention center. I deliberately took a hotel on the other side of the Baltimore inner harbor from the CC so that I'd at least get some exercise. I didn't leave my meeting badge in my room on purpose but it did mean an extra round trip.

It's probably about a 15 minute walk one way.
8 PM

strength & stretching 40:00 [3]

Core DVD in the hotel room.

ahr:114 max:126

Double stair repeats. Decided to only do 3 sets of 10' on, 2' off since I haven't done these in a while and don't want to aggravate whatever is going on in my leg.

I have been very good about stretching the last week (at least twice a day) and it seems to be improving.

hill repeats

About as fast up as down. Differences in the repeats probably more to do with getting out of the way of dogs and horses and other people and taking off and putting on mittens and hat than anything else.

Note

My Christmas present from Dennis and Emily. They scoured the web and found a map of French Creek East on anniemac's blog and had images from it painted on plates. How cool was that? Totally surprised me with them this evening.

11 AM

hiking 1:57:05 [2] 4.13 mi (28:21 / mi) +225m 24:15 / mi
weight:124.6lbs

Easy hike in the Wissahickon - basically the extended Indian Loop. However, it looked like the trail going up to the meadows from the covered bridge was icy and I knew the one from Bells Mills was not, so I stayed on the Drive. Not sure if that was better - the Drive was solid ice in places covered with an inch of water. The trails were big mud puddles in a few places - the hiking poles were very helpful.

Rain gear did well and it poured a few times so happy to have made those purchases.

2 PM

hiking 1:49:34 [3] 3.97 mi (27:36 / mi) +300m 22:21 / mi

Hill repeats. Did them on A-hill, a la Karl. Didn't do too many as I'm really trying to take it easy still.

Pretty cold out, but I quickly warmed up and had my gloves and hat off at one point although they went back on for the hike home through the meadow.

strength & stretching 50:00 [3]

Core dvd plus squats and arm stuff.
9 AM

hiking 35:23 [1] 1.91 mi (18:34 / mi) +70m 16:40 / mi

4F out so I figured it was a perfect day for testing out some of my warmest layers. Analysis: they were plenty warm! Had to unzip my jacket near the end since I was sweating just strolling along leisurely. Only things that got cold were the parts of my face not covered up. May go buy one of those ski mask thingies.

8 AM

hiking 24:17 [1] 1.28 mi (19:03 / mi) +57m 16:44 / mi

Mental discipline fail yesterday (could not stop eating, did no exercise) so decided to get up and walk in the rain this morning to try and break the cycle.
5 PM

gym 1:09:10 intensity: (8:29 @1) + (5:17 @2) + (26:28 @3) + (28:56 @4) +531m
ahr:123 max:138

And then maintained the momentum and went to the gym after working in my office all afternoon. Got it up to 15% incline in the first 5 minutes and settled on 24 minute miles (2.5 mph) as doable for 45 minutes, then worked my way back down in the last 10 minutes to about 8% but threw in some faster paces to loosen up a bit.

Machine said 1743 feet of climb. Would be nice to think that was accurate as the workout didn't seem to be particularly hard. I had to work hard to stay upright and not hunched over but legs were never tired.

Ended with a bit of stretching.

hiking 3:05:23 [3] 5.99 mi (30:57 / mi) +340m 26:18 / mi
weight:125lbs

With Sandy and Mac. Karl, John, Alison, Clem, Tom, Hugh and Jim did it on their own. Got a ride to the start from Karl so didn't have to do that part. Finally got most of the letters to look pretty decent.

The best part was the eating afterwards!

There was 6-9" of snow in the woods which made for slow going in places but fun downhills. I was overdressed by one layer - should have stuck with worked on Wednesday instead of putting the extra shirt on.

Thursday Jan 2, 2014 #

strength & stretching 15:00 [3]

A bunch of different things - planks, squats, some arms, situps. Have a pain in my shoulder now so need to back off on push-ups and some of the hand weight exercises.

Nothing I'm doing is that strenuous but I feel like I'm breaking down...

Wednesday Jan 1, 2014 #

hiking 3:30:00 [3]

Futzing around in the woods. Great way to start the new year.

Another slam dunk on the layers. Ditched hat, gloves and neck gaiter after about half an hour, and then never got cold and never got sweaty. So feeling pretty happy about that. I imagine if I were running though it would be a different story.

Note
weight:126lbs

Bummed. Had got the weight down to 123.0 on Saturday, but it crept back up again. I guess that's what taking a few days off does since I can't seem to eat less when I do that.
