Easy hike on the meadow loop.

I've got something weird going on in my right hip/thigh. It doesn't really hurt very much and it feels more like a bruise than anything else but it's been bothering me for a while now. Took a few days off to see if that made a difference and loaded up on ibuprofen. Didn't really seem to help. So decided I needed to start hiking again.

The knot in my calf seems to have gone away, though. So that's good.

Hill repeats on a little hill. Will move up to a bigger hill next time.

Pretty cold out today. Was cold when I started - especially fingers and chin - but warm after a few times up and down. Mittens would have been better than gloves.

I am in love with my new base layers from Craft. They are definitely worth the money.

walking 40:00 [0]
weight:125.2lbs

Walk around the neighborhood to see how the rain gear would do. Stayed completely dry. It wasn't raining hard though.

Note

Got some flowers from Santa today addressed to my rogaine team, Young and Beautiful. I wonder if I have to share them with the other half of the team?

hiking 2:09:50 [3] 3.24 mi (40:04 / mi) +145m 35:11 / mi

Nice easy hiking while fixing up the map at Fort Washington. There were some SAR folks in the woods - at first I couldn't figure out why this got down on the ground behind a rootstock and pulled a tarp over her, but eventually it clicked.

I had expected today to be pouring rain and my plan was to test out my newly waterproofed boots and full rain gear, but it turned out to be 65 and cloudy all afternoon. I will have to postpone the rain test. Maybe tomorrow I'll walk around the block or something - it is supposed to rain tomorrow.

But I need to take an easy week this week; I have a nagging muscle twinge in my right leg that I would like to give a chance to go away.

ahr:106 max:139

Another long slow slog but this time at Ridley. Tried to cut through Tyler at the end but the person in the Visitor's Center was having none of it. Trails were a mix of water, mud, slush and ice. Beautiful day out with temperatures in the 60's. Every so often I would hit a patch of shade/snow combination where the temperature would drop 10 or more degrees.

I put some waterproofing stuff on my boots and my feet stayed completely dry.

Note
(rest day)

Went and had a massage. She kept finding knots: shoulders (always have those), right hip (explains the funny feeling on the side of my right leg) and both quads (hmm...guess I've done a bit of climb the last week). Even the muscles in my feet were tight. But my calves were pretty good - I've been using the roller on them most nights.

Double stair repeats - 4 x (10' double, 1' rest, 1' single). Accidentally stopped the watch during the last one so that is messed up. Wore my pack which weighs about 10lbs at the moment. There was also a 4' warmup and 2' cool down.

hiking 4:01:34 [3] 8.77 mi (27:33 / mi) +636m 22:29 / mi

Hill repeats in the Wissahickon. Sandy joined me for the first couple and I managed to keep going after she had to leave. Trails were mostly frozen footsteps and bike ruts making for very uneven footing. Slowed down considerably towards the end.

Pretty cold out but did most of this with just one long sleeve shirt and tank base layer. Did put my gloves back on at the end as the sun going down made it so my fingers were getting cold.

Pretty bizarre that I have to wear more inside the house to keep warm when I'm just sitting than I do outside when I'm moving. I guess it makes but it seems weird.

Need to do this twice a week - I can feel that all the hiking is tightening my calves and hips when I do this. At least I assume it's all the hiking.

hiking 1:12:11 [3] 2.78 mi (26:00 / mi) +94m 23:31 / mi

Not dressed well for this. Wore my rogaine shoes since I expected it to be really icy and I wanted the metal studs. But in fact, it was just really slushy and in many places the trail was just a huge puddle so me feet were soaked within minutes. I also had on a slightly heavier shirt so I was also sweating like crazy. Decided to come home after a short loop and change.

hiking 2:01:50 [3] 3.89 mi (31:20 / mi) +255m 26:01 / mi

Much better layers for this loop although my feet still ended up wet. Will have to investigate whether I should get boots that are more waterproof.

hiking 5:25:32 [3] 11.02 mi (29:33 / mi) +593m 25:19 / mi

A long pokey hike in the Wissahickon. Footing was not the best in many places and so took it slow so that I wouldn't slip on the ice.

Saw Karl early on which was nice. And saw the guy that I chatted with the other day with the two cute dogs near the end.

Finally got the layers right and was warm enough without getting all sweaty.

TMI alert: don't read if you don't want the details. Allso practiced with my pee funnel which worked exactly the way it was supposed to.

hiking 2:23:37 [3] 5.71 mi (25:09 / mi) +368m 20:57 / mi

Hill repeats with Sandy. Very icy out when we started, especially on the road section before the trail starts. Took one good fall on some black ice. Decided to stop at 2; the extra slipping and sliding puts a strain on my knee and the last thing I need is to get injured

Still working on layering properly and figuring out how many layers I need. Hat, gloves and a thermal shirt were off within the first 20 minutes. That left a polypro base layer and a thin but insulated jacket. This was plenty and I was still too warm. Would have done better to keep the shirt on and take the jacket off most likely.

strength & stretching (yoga dvd) 1:00:00 [3]

I really like the first half hour of this yoga dvd but then he starts doing things I can't do and I have to modify just about everything for the next 15 minutes. But I think it's still good to do this. The last 15 minutes is good stretching which I have not been very good about doing recently.

map hiking 1:56:50 [3] 3.13 mi (37:20 / mi) +210m 30:53 / mi

Finishing up the course. Again, the geometry isn't quite right on the north side of the hill and I'll have to make some adjustments. Spent some time trying to resolve the 0 as well.

I did realize it was snowing - made it easy to retrace my steps a few times - but I didn't realize how much it was snowing. The parking lot had a dozen cars when I started but no one was there when I finished. As I exited the park, there were some stuck people on the hill so I decided to take the long way around on the major-ish roads and not risk the back way. There were cars spun out and stuck all over the place. Both Germantown and Ridge were bumper to bumper for several miles so while it's a 10 minute drive to get to Ft. Washington it was over an hour to get home.

map hiking 37:19 [2] 1.43 mi (26:06 / mi) +68m 22:44 / mi

Went over to Ft. Washington State Park for some map hiking.

A lot of new construction, new trails, new trail routings and several very, very large new rootstocks.

Part 1.

Part 2

map hiking 1:45:56 [2] 2.76 mi (38:23 / mi) +164m 32:24 / mi

And part 3. Need to fix the map in two spots.

Getting tired near the end so took a short cut.

hiking 3:14:17 [3] 7.17 mi (27:07 / mi) +502m 22:16 / mi

Hill repeats. Wanted to do this today in the rain to test out my rain gear. Unfortunately, it only drizzled most of the time and certainly never really poured. On the other hand, I did stay completely dry and all the vents worked well to keep me from getting wet from the inside. Feet stayed dry too which was good. Will have to get out in some real rain some other time.

Saw a guy with two very cute dogs several times. On the second, he said something like "I see you're doing hills, too" and on the last we stopped and chatted for a bit about why we were doing these. I told him about Kilimanjaro and he said he's been doing it for the last several years just to stay in shape and that he and his wife do a lot of hiking and traveling and have a big trip to Banff planned for the summer. The first time I've actually stopped and chatted with someone like that out on the trail. Really nice.

Stairs - 4 x (13 min double, 2 min rest). Wore my pack for the last set. It was a mental battle to finish this workout. Had to push off to get through the last set - usually I just plant my foot and straighten that leg but to finish the set I had to start pushing off the bottom foot. Not a bad thing - just strengthening different muscles. Perhaps I should be pushing all the time.

A little wonky on the splits - I pushed stop instead of lap, realized it after a few minutes, then pushed start but never lap. Thought I just hadn't heard the beep then realized after a while I was still in the warmup part of the workout so hit the lap and then the lap again. The whole workout was a more like 65 or 70 minutes.

Have a funny twinge in my right quad. Hope it's nothing serious.
