Note

I am behind on everything - work, AP posting, things at home, NAOC stuff, etc., etc.

It was a good weekend overall with some not so fun bits interlaced between lots of fun bits. Will eventually get around to posting things.

Go Valerie for beating me at every race this weekend - and not because I was so terrible but because she really did well.

The DVOA relay team did its best but its best was not quite good enough for the win. But I think we surprised some folks with how close it was.

US Relay Champs - DVOA did not have enough people for a second team and instead of getting on a random team, decided to just go find a few controls on the Red course which you were allowed to do as a solo in the mass start. Picked a route that 1) kept me out of anything nasty looking and 2) kept me away from any spectator controls where I might confuse things. Enjoyed myself and walked a lot - knees not feeling very good.

Then major cheering for DVOA. Too bad the CSU and DVOA teams had the same forking so that it came down to a sprint at the end. Very proud of Zac, Vadim, Clem and Wyatt who gave it their all and made things close.

orienteering 1:42:26 [3]

Night-O. An okay outing for the most part but not moving very fast. Knees were pretty bad. Worst though was the second to last leg where I just could not plow my way through all the crap. Honestly felt like sitting down and crying only a few hundred meters from the end because I just couldn't get out of the unmapped crap. I guess I was physically beat by that time and couldn't push through.

Note

I liked the idea of the night-o on Friday night very much.

Walked the sprint course just to get a feel for the map and terrain.

trail 36:40 [3]

Weird day exercise-wise. I usually do the core dvd first thing before heading in to school but I was planning to work at home and so thought I'd just do it later in the morning. Round about 4:00 I realize that I never got around to it and that TNT was coming up but it was such a gorgeous day that I could not see going in to the basement to do the DVD and then running in the dark. So decided to go for a run in the afternoon and do the DVD during TNT.

trail 36:26 [3]

Normal loop with the same bits of walking as Sunday. Felt worse than Sunday but as I suspected, knowing I was able to do it without stopping last week was enough to keep me moving.

trail 37:17 [3]

Slog around the normal loop; only walked one bit in the middle and from the corner home. Hopefully knowing that I can do it even in the crappy shape I'm in from not doing all that much running the last few weeks will be incentive enough not to walk much anymore.

hiking 1:05:00 [3]

Late afternoon hike in the Wissahickon after working all day trying to get on top of all the crap that has piled up at school. I did make a small dent, but there's still tons to go.

As I was coming out of the park, a group of teenage boys was walking in with a keg. Now, really, where did a group of teenagers get a keg. And what are they doing walking down the streets and into the park in broad daylight (~6pm) and no one says anything? Where are their parents? I thought about calling the police but the few people I talked to that were at the stables said not to bother - they'll come in their car but won't get out of the car and go into the park. It worries me though - 5 teenage boys and a keg is not a good combination. I really hope wicked hangovers are the only bad thing that happens.

I do not like my job at the moment. It seems the good parts of it are being totally overshadowed by the not so good parts.

trail 35:30 [3]

Tried to do the regular loop but I could tell it was going to be a long slog with lots of walking so took one of the short cuts that lops off about 5 minutes. Got very little sleep this weekend and really feeling it this morning.

TNT - walking and jogging with Sandy on the drive. Leg seems to be better and the jogging went reasonably well. Karl and Bob ran on their own.

I'm not sure of the time - I forgot to stop my watch. Hopefully Sandy has it and I'll adjust it if I'm way off.

Hudson Highlander, Lowlander version.

Woke up at 5:15 and saw that it was raining outside. Debated about just rolling over and going back to sleep but decided to trust the weather reports that it would be nice up at Harriman and made it out of the house a little before 6. Sure enough, part way there the rain stopped and the sun started to come out.

My quad was still hurting when I tried to jog so I just decided that I would walk and not try to push things. It was a little hard to watch everyone run across the parking lot but I used the time to study the map and think about the controls in the scramble window. I decided to do DCEG and I still think that was a very good choice for me. I figured I would be doing it alone and I didn't want too many chances of making errors and that looked to be a somewhat safe choice in addition to not having much climb. Saw a few people at the road crossing all heading up the trail but I stuck to the plan and started walking up the road. Apparently Janet Tryson saw me and decided to go that way and Sharon Crawforad saw her and decided to go that way and looking at the results it appears that Pavlina and Peggy also decided to go that way. Curious.

I was going along fine then made a small error at G - just lost focus for a bit as I was heading right towards it but took a detour for a couple of minutes - and then finished up fine. The trail walk was discouraging as I couldn't even manage to jog any of it. Got confused at the road intersection since the map was a bit off there and lost several more minutes trying to figure out where the trail was. Eventually bushwhacked for a bit and then found the trail. That was a bit annoying since they easily could have hung a couple of streamers to show where to go.

I didn't enjoy the last loop on the sprint map, but I suppose I do appreciate the idea of throwing in a map with a completely different scale. I managed to make another error here, getting turned around in the laurel and wasting a bit of time.

Very glad I went as the first part was fun orienteering and the woods are terrific and the weather turned out to also be terrific. Hopefully I can get myself in a little better condition to be able to a bit more next year. Almost as a way to emphasize to me that I had made the right decision to go, about half way home it started to rain again.
