trail 32:55 [3]

A quick run on the Wissahickon trails - I've done this loop a few times recently and it does seem to be getting easier although that could just be the warmer weather making it more pleasant!

Note

Had to miss orienteering again trying to get a major project done for work. Boy will I be glad when this semester is over! (4 weeks of classes and one more of exams.) And boy will I be really glad when I can get out from under some administrative responsibilities!! (Probably not for at least two more years.) :(

Note

Helped Valerie time the HAT race. A fun day.

running 45:00 [3]

TNT - on the Tyler trails (yay) with Dasha and Eric. Walked the last bit once we got back to the road. Heart rate was up over 170 on a couple of the hills late in the loop.

Tuesday Mar 25, 2008 #

Note

Yup. Sore today.

running 52:04 [3]

TNT - me, Sandy and Jim tonight. Walked down (10:30), did 3 miles(29:47), walked the trail part of the hill (5:59), jogged the road part of the hill home (5:44). Heart rate for the 3 miles was around 160 and again for the road jog.

strength & stretching 40:00 [1]

Core workout. Did a couple hours of yardwork this afternoon - only a couple thousand more to go. Good thing I enjoy it but I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow...

trail 41:12 [3]

Trail run in the Wissahickon. Still playing with the heart rate monitor. I'm pretty sure the heart rate numbers are max, not average.

hiking 2:05:00 [1]

Hike across the Wissahickon over to Chestnut HIll and back to run some errands.

running 49:57 [3]

TNT - track workout.

Used Valerie's heart rate monitor finally. Did 15 laps - a few walking, most in the outer lanes, most at around 2:35-2:40 pace. I'm not sure if the heart rate number is max or average but it was between 158 and 166 for all the non-walking laps. Will have to figure out what, if anything, that is telling me!

running 58:14 [3]

TNT - walked down with Sandy, ran 3 miles, then walked back up. Dasha snuck up behind us from out of nowhere on the hill home. Felt sluggish to start but at the turn around it suddenly started to feel a little easier.
15:16 out
14:33 back
Yes! Under 10 min pace. Woohoo. It took an all out effort on the last half mile to do that but who cares.

Hickory Run. There's such great woods there; too bad the start/finish options have to have an impact on courses.

All the snow is gone and while things weren't in full bloom there were places where a few things were starting to bud. Hopefully they'll open the gates soon so I can drive further in.

Note

Been feeling really, really tired all the time lately. Decided I'd better go see my doctor next week.

Note

An excellent TNT evening: dinner by Tom and special guest Ivar Helgesen who had some really interesting maps and pictures.

running 50:00 [3]

TNT - a good night.
Walked a couple laps until I felt woken up enough to start jogging.
Jogged a couple on the track feeling very creaky.
With daylight saving time, it was still light enough to see off the track, so ran a lap around all the fields - not sure how far that is, but it's at least a mile - which felt pretty good since the ground was very soggy, so soft.
Got back on the track and did several laps of hard on the straights easy on the curves and then finished with a couple of "ladders" - tried to take it up a notch for each 100 and then started over again after each lap.
Not a particularly organized workout but I'm sure it did some good and it was certainly better than the nap I could easily have done if we didn't have TNT to keep us going.

running 1:06:30 [3]

TNT - started with Sandy and after walking down to the drive (a little over 10 minutes) we slogged out a 10:23 mile, then walked a half mile, then did another mile in 9:45 (includes the short downhill half mile :) ). Sandy took it easy after that and I did three more halves at 5:14, 5:23 and 5:12. So I'm working at increasing distance and going faster and making slow progress on both fronts. Walked up the hill with Bob who also took it easy due to an injury.

map hiking 30:00 [2]

Hanging controls for the VF training. Jogged about half the time; trying to finish in under an hour including driving to the parking spots which I did - just barely.

orienteering 1:25:50 [3]

A pretty sorry outing at today's VF training. I'm not sure if it was the hanging before hand or the beers last night, but after about the second control I couldn't run much at all. Got worried after #6 that I would be out way too late (we didn't start until after 4:30) and we still needed to pick up the controls. I was pretty far out, so I just bailed and ran/walked trails all the way back.

running 45:00 [3]

TNT - 3 miles on the track plus the walk over and back, plus a little bit of stretching.

Kept a steady pace of between 2:35 and 2:38 for each lap (in lane 2) with one at 2:30 and one at 2:25 to finish things off. So, getting closer to being able to do 10 minute miles again. 6 months ago 10 minute miles were routine but 6 weeks ago they seemed impossible. Progress.

strength & stretching 45:00 [1]

Core workout plus some extended stretching and a few yoga poses.

Too much time on the computer today; my neck is really stiff this evening.

Tuesday Mar 4, 2008 #

running 1:00:00 [3]

TNT - three miles on the drive at just under 11 minute pace, plus the down and up. Not fast, but at least I did string together 3 miles.

Karl had some great stories to tell of his trip to Minnesota with Outward Bound to learn how to dogsled.

map hiking 3:00:00 [2]

Stayed overnight in White Haven and did some more woods work at Hickory Run this morning. I pretty much had had it after three hours; not a good sign for doing a 24 hour rogaine.

I think I've checked any and all features that might make good control sites and also noted where the woods are nice, where they're not so nice and where some map corrections need to be made.

The weather is supposed to be crappy the next few days, but today was another gorgeous day. I was overdressed, and that's pretty hard for me!

Course setting stuff at Hickory Run. Gorgeous day. A couple of inches of snow but not enough to hide features. The ponds and marshes didn't stand out like a few weeks ago - they are now frozen and just have snow on them making them look like most everything else whereas before they were wet and a different color and so stood out like beacons.
