running 1:10:27 [3]

TNT - Karl, Jim, Bob, Clem, Sandy and me

4 miles on the drive at a very (and I mean very) slow pace.

Monday Jan 29, 2007 #

Yoga/Pilates 1:05:00 [1]

Another excellent yoga class.

Sunday Jan 28, 2007 #

orienteering race 39:54 [3]

Score-O at Hibernia. 40 minute time limit. :)

Did okay and had fun.

map hiking 30:00 [1]

Control pick-up. Jogged a little but the bouncing pack with the controls and stands in it was uncomfortable so not too much.

hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Hilly route in the Wissahickon. Muscles sore on the uphills - guess Thursday's workout was good. Surprisingly short of breath on the uphills - guessing it's from giving blood yesterday since I didn't notice it last weekend at Ann's.

running 40:00 [3]

TNT - with Tom, Clem and Dasha

So after Dasha took out the first two laps a little too fast for me on a cold night when I wasn't warmed up and I had to slow it down for the next two, I decided two "fast", two slow was a reasonable workout. Splits:
4:54
5:08
4:36
5:20
4:37
5:24
and then a really fast one lap in 1:59 and walked the last lap. The rest of the 40 minutes is the initial jog to the track and the last walking lap. I count any time I'm moving! Not super fast times but I'm pleased with the workout since it was definitely more of a workout than I've managed the last several weeks.

running 1:02:54 [3]

TNT - with Karl, Sandy, Ben, Greg, Jim, Bob, Clem and Dasha.

Did 4 miles on the drive at about 10 minute pace plus the down and up.

Celebrated Karl's birthday afterwards.

Felt surprisingly good. Tromping through the snow at Ann's? Yoga class? Who knows. But it was nice to feel strong for a change.

Monday Jan 22, 2007 #

Yoga/Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Yay! The class has started again. Good stretches and lots of balances. I always feel so much peppier after class.

Sunday Jan 21, 2007 #

hiking 1:32:00 [2]

A morning hike with Ann and Charlie before heading home.

Saturday Jan 20, 2007 #

hiking 2:02:00 [2]

Tromping around on the Hammond Hill map with Ann Leonard in about 6 inches of snow. Found a lean-to that someone had built in the middle of the woods complete with kerosene stove and blankets and some tools. No one was around when we happended upon it, but it was a little disconcerting to think someone was living in the woods right there, not all that far from their house.

running 46:00 [3]

TNT - with Dasha and Clem

Slug pace laps at the track with an occasional one walking just to prove I could indeed go even slower.

running 1:57 [4] 0.25 mi (7:48 / mi)

Clem talked us (me and Dasha) into going hard for one lap as a way to finish. I think he made up the time just to make me feel good. Dasha was 1:31. And this after a couple of weeks on an ER rotation. Go Dasha!

Tuesday Jan 16, 2007 #

running 47:38 [3]

TNT - Alison, John, Clem and Jim.

An abbreviated run as John turned an ankle early on and we didn't want him waiting too long for us. Three miles on the drive at slug pace. Fun to watch Alison take off as she picked it up nicely on the way in; jogged up the trail home just so the night wasn't a total wuss out.

running 31:52 [3]

Short run in the Wissahickon just on this side. Did a lot of much needed house cleaning this weekend and needed to loosen up afterwards. I'm more sore from the cleaning than the run.

strength & stretching 13:00 [1]

A good session.

Thursday Jan 11, 2007 #

running 35:00 [3]

TNT - with Clem and later Jim and just for dinner Eric.

Time is a guess - forgot my watch. Jogged very slowly for 3 laps then picked it up a bit for the 4th, repeated three times, plus a little warm up/cool down walking. Clem timed me in 1:58 for the last fast lap which surprised me since I felt pretty sluggish the whole evening.

Tuesday Jan 9, 2007 #

running 1:08:20 [3]

TNT - Jim, Bob, Dennis, Clem, Dasha and surpise guests from New Zealand Matt and Lara.

5 very slow miles on the drive plus the down and up.

Sunday Jan 7, 2007 #

gym 35:00 [1]

Easy half hour on the bike in the fitness center while reading. ("Eleni" is very good but difficult to keep reading.) Also 5 minutes on the elliptical.

gym 12:00 [4] 2.25 mi (5:20 / mi)

Tried to keep it moving on the elliptical for a bit.

strength & stretching 12:00 [3]

Various random machines and exercises .

Friday Jan 5, 2007 #

gym 30:00 [3] 4.52 mi (6:38 / mi)

Elliptical machine at the hotel. Had the level set at really low, but increased the mph every few minutes and then did some intervals for about 10 minutes near the end.

strength & stretching 10:00 [1]

Some random things in the fitness center.

Note

Walked around New Orleans for a little while - down to the Mississippi and then into the French Quarter and along Bourbon Street.

Thursday Jan 4, 2007 #

running 18:58 [3] 2.0 mi (9:29 / mi)

Was planning on 3 but 2 seemed just right. Pushed the pace to the "this is hard work but doable for a little while" level. I've decided on a new 3 mile loop that goes 1 mile upstream then back plus another 1/2 then back to the start. Although I didn't change the loop so I could stop at 2, it was a nice bonus. I like the new loop a lot better.

running 20:30 [1]

Getting down to the drive and back home.

Note

Heading off this afternoon to New Orleans for the annual joint math meetings. Wonder if any other orienteering mathematicians will be there?

hiking 1:30:02 [1]

Another nice trail hike in the Wissahickon on trails I haven't been on in a while. A whole section was rerouted and the new trail is very, very nice. I really do need to figure out a way to make a good map of the trail network.

Note

Everyone else is putting in goals and recaps so I figure I ought to do something. Unfortunately, my total training hours went down (280 to 268), with orienteering hours going down as well, while running went up. I'm not real consistent about how I log stuff though so it's hard to know exactly where the differences are.

I also need to work on concentration during O races; I've had some pretty bad races the last 15 months. I've had some really good ones as well though; most, although not all, of those have been on middle distance courses.

I'm in somewhat of a funk about running at the moment - it just seems too hard and it hurts too much - so it's tough to come up with goals, and ones that I care enough about to be serious about accomplishing them. So I think I'll wait a bit before deciding on any.

running 1:02:43 [3]

TNT - with Jim, Bob, Dennis

Did 4 miles on the drive at 10:01 per mile plus the jog down and walk back up. The guys went further and faster but I'm taking it easy for a few weeks (at least).

No one else could make it, and we all were free in the afternoon so we went at 3:30 which meant daylight which was nice.
