Note

It is crazy windy here today. I am sure there will be many trees down in the Wissahickon. So far only small branches in my yard. The power flickered once, but came right back on - enough that I had to reset clocks on a few appliances but that's it.

I've been kind of down all day and had zero motivation to get in any exercise. Hopefully I will feel like doing something tomorrow or will at least be able to get myself to do something whether I feel like it or not.

My root canal scheduled for tomorrow was postponed.

hiking 1:36:47 intensity: (7:22 @1) + (47:59 @2) + (37:38 @3) + (3:18 @4) + (30 @5) 4.81 mi (20:07 / mi) +179m 18:02 / mi
ahr:110 max:158

Went out for a walk with a vague idea of going in to the woods if it didn't seem crowded. There were no cars parked by the A-hill trailhead so went in there intending to just to hike the trail around to the horse stables. I encountered about half a dozen people/groups but most were wearing masks (I was) and were courteous and moved over to the edges of the trail as we passed. Then as I was getting towards the end I noticed that there seemed to be much more of a path by the deer exclosure than I've noticed before. It looked pretty well trodden so I decided to investigate. It's clearly not used much, but enough so it's easily passable. It follows around on the outside of the exclosure going through some junky sections and some nice sections of woods. There was enough of a trail to make it pleasant and there were no people. Less than a mile around but a really nice loop. Now that I know it's there, I will probably incorporate it into most of my outings.

Twice around with 15lb pack. Gorgeous day. Glad I got out earlyish.

strength & stretching 1:14:30 intensity: (2:42 @0) + (23:48 @1) + (13:22 @2) + (28:08 @3) + (6:30 @4) 0.47 mi (2:38:36 / mi)
ahr:107 max:143

Peleton body weight classes plus some extra stretching.
The body weight stuff was hard - getting up and down off the floor is not easy for me but is definitely something I should work on. I will either break my knees or get them more flexible and stronger!

Sunday Apr 26, 2020 #

3 PM

hiking 1:04:03 intensity: (1:04:02 @2) + (1 @3) 3.21 mi (19:57 / mi) +85m 18:26 / mi
ahr:101 max:101

Short rainy walk around the neighborhood but still some people out. 20lb pack. It seemed hard.

hiking 3:03:23 intensity: (19 @0) + (25:01 @1) + (1:34:28 @2) + (1:03:32 @3) + (3 @4) 9.45 mi (19:24 / mi) +271m 17:49 / mi
ahr:107 max:131

Around and around the neighborhood, a bit slower each loop. Beautiful day so a lot of people out. I took some perverse pleasure in walking down the middle of the road on a few occasions making the cars slow down as I took my time getting out of the way.

Yard 20:00 [3]

Digging up some plants that have gone crazy and taken over sections of my garden. Spent about an hour at it - I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.
4 PM

hiking 1:07:51 intensity: (11:18 @1) + (22:30 @2) + (34:02 @3) + (1 @4) 3.27 mi (20:45 / mi) +84m 19:13 / mi
ahr:109 max:131

A tad longer than normal as I returned home so I could drop off some daffodil bulbs at my neighbor's house. And a tad slower than lately as I had a heavy pack. Well, heavy for me - 20lbs.

Sunday Apr 19, 2020 #

3 PM

hiking 1:54:09 intensity: (9 @1) + (1:54:00 @2) 6.33 mi (18:01 / mi) +179m 16:34 / mi

ahr:111 max:129

Neighborhood walk. Drizzly and grey, so very few people out.

Really struggled yesterday and ended up not doing much all day, let alone get any exercise. So today, decided just to get in a walk if nothing else. And then felt better for the rest of the day.
5 PM

strength & stretching 35:01 intensity: (39 @0) + (13:02 @1) + (7:41 @2) + (9:44 @3) + (2:11 @4) + (1:44 @5) 0.5 mi (1:10:00 / mi)
ahr:107 max:170

Peleton full body 30 min + some stretching. Liked this one a lot.

Thursday Apr 16, 2020 #

strength & stretching 1:05:00 [3]

Peleton workouts:
15 min chest & back
15 min arm & shoulder
20 min glutes & legs
10 min core
plus a little stretching after each one

Wednesday Apr 15, 2020 #

ahr:112 max:146

There were all sorts of cars parked on the roads near the trail heads in my neighborhood so glad I had decided to just continue to walk the streets where it's easy to keep my distance. Wore my pack with some weights in it - only about 10 lbs. though.

ahr:114 max:138

Lost power around 2pm (because of the storms I assume) so my plan to do some exercise videos went out the window. Did some work for school for a while and then the weather cleared so went for the same neighborhood walk I've done the last few days. Then ate a bunch and now that the power is back on (7pm) don't feel like doing anything else.

2 PM

Yard 1:00:00 [3]

A bunch of yard work. Just as effective as an upper body workout most likely. Good to be outside for several hours after getting a bunch of inside stuff done this morning.
5 PM

walking 59:15 intensity: (2:54 @1) + (25:54 @2) + (29:47 @3) + (40 @4) 3.12 mi (18:59 / mi) +81m 17:35 / mi
ahr:111 max:132

Followed by a walk around the neighborhood. I started out in a very light rain and finished in full sunshine. Weird.

Saturday Apr 11, 2020 #

6 AM

hiking 1:59:59 intensity: (23:56 @1) + (46:48 @2) + (47:52 @3) + (1:23 @4) 5.38 mi (22:18 / mi) +223m 19:45 / mi
ahr:108 max:142

A little slower than usual in part because I brought along a bag and was picking up trash since it was really upsetting me to see it and in part because I'm a bit sore. The Thursday cardio workout was pretty intense and I'm still feeling that.
5 PM

walking 1:02:23 intensity: (21:14 @1) + (3:25 @2) + (36:46 @3) + (58 @4) 3.17 mi (19:41 / mi) +82m 18:13 / mi
ahr:110 max:133

Just a walk around the neighborhood. Lots of people out this evening since it was really pleasant but easy enough to keep distance.

Friday Apr 10, 2020 #

7 AM

hiking 1:55:02 intensity: (1:39 @1) + (27:48 @2) + (1:22:45 @3) + (2:47 @4) + (3 @5) 5.26 mi (21:52 / mi) +198m 19:35 / mi
ahr:114 max:145

Not too crowded - probably helped that it was a bit chilly and overcast. Interestingly, the only people I encountered with face masks (I had one that I would pull up whenever I saw someone ahead) were very friendly whereas everyone else was good about keeping distance but did not offer any greeting or even look at me.
3 PM

walking 1:35:29 intensity: (41:34 @1) + (2:35 @2) + (44:32 @3) + (6:46 @4) + (2 @5) 5.0 mi (19:06 / mi) +124m 17:44 / mi
ahr:106 max:148

Inspired by this I went out and did another 5 miles. Just walked the streets though. And I'm not getting up in the middle of the night and doing another 5 miles.

Crazy windy out. And it even snowed a bit in the middle.

cardio 1:00:58 intensity: (11 @0) + (9:12 @1) + (7:32 @2) + (23:32 @3) + (18:34 @4) + (1:57 @5) 1.56 mi (39:04 / mi)
ahr:119 max:159

The workout Sandy found.

hiking 36:47 intensity: (13:53 @1) + (6:48 @2) + (16:06 @3) 1.38 mi (26:39 / mi) +47m 24:07 / mi
ahr:105 max:129

After spending the morning grading exams, went for a walk off trail in the Wissahickon (although the track may not look like it) for a little bit. Went up and down a couple of steep slopes but mostly just wandered around. I could see the trails and there were a lot of people on them. I didn't see a single person wearing a mask (I had one on when I was on the trail to get into and out of the park).

i am starting to understand just how much I crave spending time alone in the woods.

Tuesday Apr 7, 2020 #

9 AM

hiking 45:32 intensity: (8:18 @1) + (12:47 @2) + (23:18 @3) + (1:06 @4) + (3 @5) 2.5 mi (18:13 / mi) +106m 16:05 / mi
ahr:111 max:148

It's easier to keep physical distance on the roads than the trails now that the Wiss is so crowded.

Monday Apr 6, 2020 #

3 PM

cardio 28:25 intensity: (6 @1) + (3:42 @2) + (17:29 @3) + (5:58 @4) + (1:10 @5) 0.76 mi (37:24 / mi)
ahr:122 max:170

3 times around the circuit I devised in my yard, plus 5 before hand without doing any of the exercises just going around to warm up and 2 afterwards to cool down. I jogged some in between stations but took it easy as I just wanted to see if this was something I could see doing regularly. I made a video and am trying to figure out how to get it from my phone to somewhere I can link to.

Try this.
And I said Russian dead lifts but meant Romanian dead lifts (I think).

The track has me in my neighbor's yard and across the street but all I did was go around and around my house.

Sunday Apr 5, 2020 #

Note

Here's a project idea (for myself): can I create one of those exercise trails in my yard where you do various things at different stations. There's a tree branch where I could do pull ups, do some sort of balance thing on some of the rocks that are garden borders, designate places for pushups, and so on. And then would I actually use it?

Yard 1:00:00 [3]

Outside for about three hours but wasn't working the whole time. Digging up some plants I not longer want in the flower beds since they are taking over (orange day lilies). Moving a few rocks - overdid it a bit with this I think.

Saturday Apr 4, 2020 #

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

20 min full body Peleton workout
30 min full body different Peleton workout
10 min stretch

Note

I had all sorts of plans for exercising yesterday but I got hit with a wave of real sadness about the state of the world and how disrupted and at risk so many lives are at the moment. I decided not to do anything and not to feel bad about it.

Thursday Apr 2, 2020 #

11 AM

hiking 3:11:37 intensity: (2:17 @1) + (3:09:19 @2) + (1 @3) 9.0 mi (21:17 / mi) +331m 19:07 / mi
ahr:101 max:101

Clearly the heart rate data is bogus. A beautiful day - windy so the bugs were kept at bay and full sunshine for most of it. Didn't bring a lunch so didn't stop but did eat a shot block at the 1 hour and 2 hour marks.

My audiobook finished at the 5 mile mark and I'm not surprised I picked up the pace a bit for the rest of the way home.

Another out and back since that trail doesn't seem to be anywhere near as crowded as the others.

Surprised how stiff and sore I was in the evening after this hike given how good I felt during it. My knee didn't even twinge until the 8 mile mark and then a quick stretch of the hamstrings and it was good all the way home.

Wednesday Apr 1, 2020 #

Note

Rest day - sort of. Funny twinge in hip so I thought I'd take it easy today. But I wanted to finish the garden project I started the other day since I can see it out the window where I sit to do most of my work and it was bugging me. So some time lifting heavy stones and digging and so forth. Good to be outside.
