Beautiful day. I like the wind.

hiking 2:00:00 [3]

Joined the FOW volunteers cleaning up trash along Bells Mills Rd. It was about a 4 hour outing but there sure was a lot of standing around as we waited for the police and flaggers to set up so there was only one lane of traffic, and then a long break after doing one side before we came back up the hill to do the other side. I'll count it as 2 hours. Picked up a good bit of trash in the woods - found some large beer bottle piles - and probably did at least 100 squats to pick up stuff just along the road. Not really training, but enough of a workout that I don't feel compelled to do anything else today.

10 mins on the treadmill to warm up (it was raining so I didn't walk) and then a session with the trainer.

Nice hike with Sandy. Not fair that I felt winded going up the small hills. I don't seem to be in as good shape as I think I am.

orienteering 30:38 [3]

Forgot to start my watch until after we finished the first window and were on the road to #6.

Short Stumble with Valerie. It was a low key outing with the emphasis on having a good time. Only one screw up when I mistook a yellow/orange control on a trail bend as being at the trail junction and went into the woods way too early for control U. Had a lot of fun despite the mucky conditions. I avoided the worst of it - Valerie found a nice place to go into the mud to mid-thigh.

Brrr. Wasn't sure how to dress but got it mostly right.

Just meandering while listening to an audio book and then did one of Greg's TSS exercises while on the drive. When I was done with the maps I went back up on the trails. Hopefully I can make a habit of this.

Note

I didn't take my laptop this weekend and it was nice to not feel like I had to do "work". I checked my email a few times to make sure there was nothing urgent, but by and large I just took a vacation from being "connected". Now struggling with wanting to ignore everything that piled up and knowing that the longer I put it off the longer it will take to catch up.

orienteering 1:04:02 intensity: (54 @1) + (5:32 @2) + (10:48 @3) + (31:56 @4) + (14:52 @5) 2.85 mi (22:28 / mi) +160m 19:08 / mi

Another fun day in the woods. I've never had controls up on top of the hillside in the southwest corner of the park so it was fun to go there. No big mistakes just sloppy on a few and the same issue with not being able to read the map because my eyes were tearing so much.

Knee started to freeze up near the end. I guess that's a good thing since it means I was running a good bit?

Really glad I made the effort to go up for the weekend. The terrain is so much fun and not the same old stuff I could see in DVOA land every weekend.

ahr:120 max:185

Really fun, fun course. Screwed up #1 a lot, inefficiently zigzagged my way to #4 and then left #5 in a funny direction so was confused a bit on my way to #6. But was so happy to feel like I was moving well. Had the usual trouble reading the map as my eyes were tearing the whole time because of the cold. Have not found a good solution for that.

Part of the issue on #1 (but only part) was a map printing problem. On the competition maps a stone wall came out as just a line so it looked like a cliff - on the map I used to pick up controls it was a stone wall. Seeing the stone wall in the terrain where there wasn't one mapped had me second guessing where I was for a bit.

Early morning hike with Abby and Simon. Met them at Valley Green. Great company and really nice day for a hike.

Got tired near the very end up the hill home; might be time to start doing longer hikes and hill workouts.

ahr:118 max:145

Hiked down to the drive then ran 1/2 a mile towards the covered bridge, walked a bit, then ran the 1/2 mile back and hiked back home. Didn't feel anywhere near as awful as I thought it was going to so that was a nice surprise.

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

Class at the gym; used 5lb weights for a few things but 2.5 for most. It was a good decision.

Then walked to the voting place in the neighborhood and voted. Used the new computerized machines that also print a backup copy. Have no idea if they are any better for preventing fraud but it was easy to use. The computer screen had large print so didn't even need my reading glasses which I did remember to bring.

Session with trainer. Legs were a bit tired from the weekend but I powered through.

ahr:134 max:185

Lots of mistakes (a couple minutes each on #1,4 and 6) but I did do some running (slow jogging) even in the woods so I'll call it a win. I could blame the mistakes on being tired from the course setting for the score-o yesterday and Friday and then the long drive out to Pine Grove, but really my orienteering lately has just been sloppy and there's no excuse.

Putting out 9 controls on trails around the lake before today's event.

I couldn't believe the turnout!! We gave out the 75 maps we printed plus the three Lena and I had for putting out controls and then had to ask a few groups if they could make do with 1 or 2 fewer maps since there were still people arriving late who wanted to go out. It was crazy. But everyone was back within 10 minutes of the time limit and I only heard good comments so it seemed everyone enjoyed themselves. Glad I decided to do it and Lena was fabulous to work with.

Putting out controls for tomorrow.

All sorts of issues:
The bathrooms near where we had planned to park are closed for the winter. We decided to move the start/finish - the maps were printed two weeks ago so Lena is just going to draw a new start/finish on the maps. Not ideal, but we thought people would appreciate being close to heated bathrooms.

They are doing work near the dam at one end of the lake. Going around that end of the lake is a huge part of doing a set of beginner controls and I expect most advanced runners will go there as well Luckily they said it would be okay if people used the bridge and stairway, they just need to be careful going around and across some equipment

One of the streams that was two or three feet of less than an inch of water is now 10 feet of knee deep water. Again, the beginner loop was crossing there. There is a bridge across the stream not too far away - I wish I had though to put the control there and not where it is.

Oh well. And one control site has had the streamers removed twice. The first streamer I put out a month or so ago was gone when I was putting out stakes last weekend and the streamer and the stake were gone today. Hopefully the control will still be there tomorrow.
