strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Class at SJU

I wanted to attend something at school this evening so decided to come today instead of my normal Thursday. Which turned out great since yesterday was a pretty nice day for tromping around Ft. Washington and today not so much.

hiking 2:51:52 [3] 5.37 mi (32:00 / mi) +190m 28:50 / mi

The rest of the HNY course that I didn't do last time plus some more checking of some of the map updates.

They have expanded the disc golf significantly, making much larger areas where the baskets are and putting more than one basket for each hole, The tees are now wood frames with bricks in them - very snazzy looking. My tracks thus have some out and back detours as I tried to do quick map updates where I could.

trail 43:37 [3] 2.88 mi (15:09 / mi) +94m 13:45 / mi

Meadow loop with Sandy before the rain. Overdressed as usual but nothing wrong with a good sweat. Felt like I was flying on the slightly downhill section through the meadow where the trail is relatively wide and even.

hiking 3:14:33 [3] 5.8 mi (33:33 / mi) +238m 29:45 / mi

That time of year again. Working on a happy new year course at Ft. Washington. Need to make some map updates - hence some of the back and forth trying to sort out where the trails go. The woods are extremely open compared to 5 years ago when I last did this there.

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

Core dvd plus 20 mins of arm stuff and stretching.

I'm a wimp and didn't want to go outside today!

hiking 2:02:56 [3] 5.0 mi (24:35 / mi) +190m 21:59 / mi

I was all set to do double this but I started to get really chilled (it wasn't all that cold out but I didn't have any extra layers with me) and just feeling all over blah. I suppose I could have pushed on but it didn't seem like a good idea.

I haven't been sleeping all that well lately and I am going to chalk it up to that.

hiking 1:55:12 [3] 4.62 mi (24:56 / mi) +275m 21:03 / mi

New hill workout - partly on trails and partly on the road.

orienteering 1:10:10 [3]

Nice brown course by Samuel Kolins. I struggled to read the map as my eyes were tearing the whole time. Had some good legs but some very sloppy ones as well. Definitely out of practice. I did enjoy the downhills in the snow covered leaves though - I do a little sliding, skiing kind of thing that feels easy. Didn't feel as good running on the trails as I did last weekend though

trail 44:50 [3] 2.92 mi (15:21 / mi) +93m 13:58 / mi

Found a feature on my watch for run/walk and set it for 2 mins/1 min. I kept not wanting to run but whenever the watch chimed I was like Pavlov's dog and just started jogging. Kept it up the whole way. Not particularly fast as the trails were leaf covered and very sloppy with mud and even slush in places.

I took yesterday off as I've had a sore spot in the very top of my quad. I did a little stretching and foam rolling last night too. I didn't notice it today which is good so here's hoping it just needed a day off.

hiking 2:28:54 [3] 5.4 mi (27:35 / mi) +251m 24:06 / mi

Hill repeats on A-hill. Managed to do 8. I still don't understand why these seem so much harder than the ones behind Valley Green Inn and yet they aren't nearly as much climb. Had a 15 lb pack.

Tuesday Nov 13, 2018 #

cardio 35:00 [3]

Elliptical. Tried to really push the last 5 minutes before the 5 minute cooldown. I really do need to set some goals for these workouts.

hiking 59:32 [3] 2.9 mi (20:32 / mi) +106m 18:27 / mi

Slow amble around the meadow loop with Sandy. Ken fixed the climb thing so it's working again.

Realized I should be hiking with a pack to prepare for Patagonia so threw 15 lbs in and lugged it around. Oof. Already lost all that conditioning.

orienteering 1:01:07 [3] 4.2 km (14:33 / km)

Brown course at Fair Hill. Tried to run whenever I could so ran most trails and most fields although would occasionally need to take a break. Couldn't really run much in the woods - need to work on that.

Botched #6 by being too far to the left even though I knew I was too far to the left and it took way to long to concede that I must have passed the control. Came back right to it through the swampy muck. Then stopped to help two little girls on the white course who were actually on the right trail but were confused so I showed them where the trail crossed the stream both on the map and in the terrain and then they felt confident enough to continue. Was okay to 8 but got trapped on the wrong side of a bunch of downed trees and had a serious case of "you can't get there from here" but eventually crawled my way over. Then was ridiculously sloppy to 9 - I think I was getting tired and just stopped paying attention. There were also several people with me and I got lazy and was letting them navigate.

But was still very happy with my time. This was the first time orienteering since NAOC and the first time running while orienteering in at least 6 months.

map hiking 1:16:01 [3] 2.62 mi (29:01 / mi) +64m 26:58 / mi

Picking up controls as it was such a beautiful day and I had the time.

trail 47:23 [3] 2.86 mi (16:34 / mi)

TNT meadow loop run with Sandy. Jogged a good bit of it again.

map hiking 4:00:00 [3]

Managed to delete the data from my Garmin. :(

Hanging controls and putting out water for Sunday's Fair Hill event. Tom gave me controls in some really nice open woods that were relatively flat. I doubt I did 50 meters of climb. I didn't cover that much distance (can't remember if it was almost 5 or almost 6 when I looked at my watch near the end) and I was double checking everything since there were no streamers so really slow. After getting the controls out, it was just a couple of short hikes to put out 3 gallons in one direction and 2 in the other at controls I had hung so easy to find.

Really nice to be in the woods with a map and compass - it's been a while and I forgot how much I enjoy it. The rain held off for the most part so much nicer weather than I had planned for which is always nice.

hiking 2:43:21 [3] 6.24 mi (26:11 / mi) +474m 21:11 / mi

Hill repeats. Why did my log suddenly stop calculating climb? This would have been a good one!!

(Looked up the climb on Garmin Connect.)

cardio 35:00 [3]

Elliptical at SJU. Left early to go vote and so had plenty of time to do a little longer workout. The bottom of my feet were numb by the end though so I think 30 minutes is the max I should do.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Followed by class. Went down to 4 lb weights for all the arm stuff. For some it's too easy and for some I can barely get through them (anything over my head or out in front of me).

Note
(rest day)

So after our hike to the waterfall yesterday Ann and I went to wait for Ken and Charlie to finish the race. They won so that was good, but they came in a minute or so before the time cutoff and I stupidly stood around a lot waiting for them without my knee brace on. And then really stupidly while we were waiting I went for a short hike up the really steep and rocky hillside they were coming down to finish, still without my knee brace and obviously had to come back down again. So my knee is a bit sore today. I think I'll give it a rest.

Sunday Nov 4, 2018 #

hiking 2:13:25 [3] 3.71 mi (35:58 / mi)

Hike with Ann up to Jacoby Falls, a very pretty waterfall once you finally got there. There was some activity in the woods on the way where it looked as if they were replacing a gas pipeline so a bunch of construction stuff with a roadbed on the far side of the creek we were hiking along to get there. So not quite the idyllic pristine hike we were anticipating but still a very nice outing and the falls themselves were past where all the construction stuff stopped.

hiking 3:03:37 [3] 6.81 mi (26:58 / mi)

Hiking with Ann Leonard near the Rootstock Racing Stockville site. Charlie and Ken are doing the race and we're just visiting. We'll meet them at the finish line tomorrow.

trail 43:28 [3] 2.87 mi (15:09 / mi) +88m 13:50 / mi

Boo hiss. AP didn't recognize this as something other than just hiking. I mean look at the graph - clearly I'm doing some sort of intervals, right?

Anyway, I did jog 125 paces, walk 75 for the loop. I didn't even bail when I hit the steep hill (short but steep) in the middle of 125. I now know I can go this fast which is a little scary since now on my "jogging" days - which I am going to try and do once a week on average - I will need to continue to try to hit this pace. Ah well, I suppose goals are good.

Let's see how my knees fare.

Thursday Nov 1, 2018 #

cardio 30:00 [3]

Elliptical. I should have a plan with these workouts - like maintain a certain pace, or go a certain distance, or keep my heart rate in a certain zone - but I have no idea what a good plan would be.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Followed by class. My arms felt like noodles today and weights that have been fine were really difficult. I almost went and got lighter weights but settled for doing one arm at a time for some things.

On the other hand, the calf raises that everyone else felt were really hard were a piece of cake given that I do more and harder ones every morning for my Achllles.
