strength & stretching 40:00 [3]

Same deal as usual: 5 min warmup, 30 min workout, 5 min stretch.

Was worried I'd be sore after yesterday, but felt pretty good.

map hiking 5:19:01 [3] 9.08 mi (35:08 / mi) +187m 33:01 / mi

Course setting for an adventure race later this year. Need some better guidance on how tough/easy/long/short the course should be.

But it was a beautiful day in the woods and I had a blast. Wish I could say more but on the slight chance that any adventure racers read my log I better not.

hiking 2:13:42 [3] 6.87 mi (19:28 / mi) +287m 17:14 / mi

A purposeful hike around the Wissahickon. Mid 70's and just beautiful. The annoying little gnatty things were all out though - kept me moving so they wouldn't swarm me. Despite some soreness from yesterday's workout I felt pretty strong until the very end when I just wanted to be done.

And for once I seem to be on top of most of my various obligations and projects! Wonder how long that will last?

5 min warmup

30 min personal training

Sweating tons today. It probably hit 75F!

hiking 53:00 [3] 2.91 mi (18:13 / mi) +94m 16:33 / mi

Futzed around all morning and couldn't get myself out the door. Finally decided that I could at least get around the meadow loop and if I was feeling like more I could always go around again. I think lowering my expectations for myself was useful. (I did a few minutes of weeding before starting so I deducted that time. My daffodils are getting ready to bloom!)

biking 22:53 [3] 2.19 mi (10:27 / mi) +71m 9:29 / mi

And while walking around the meadow loop I realized that one, the trails weren't nearly as muddy as they were on Sunday and were in pretty decent condition for biking and two, I could ride the roads over and cut in at the start of the meadow and just do that part of the trail. That sound doable or at least not scary and so I decided I would do a little mountain biking as well. I came off twice - both times trying to go around a corner and uphill over rocks at the same time. But not bad falls so I accomplished my number one goal of not injuring myself.

And I figured out how to use another one of the gears - just have to push the lever slightly again after shifting and it will fall in. But I'm still not very coordinated with shifting - can't remember which way goes harder and which way easier with which hand.

Note

I gave an exam in my Calc II class last week and have been meeting with lots of students the last two days. It was a little bit of a wake-up call for those that had been coasting I think. Anyway, scheduled meetings during the time I usually swim but this way I didn't have to go in Wednesday. My arms were pretty sore in any case (from the push-ups I think) so maybe a good idea to take a day off.

Monday Feb 20, 2017 #

Note

Only a little extra sore this morning. Didn't sleep very well but I'm not sure why. I think I probably should have stretched more than I did. Gained weight - which is usually the case - I just can not stop myself from eating a few hours after I finish a longish workout.

strength & stretching 40:00 [3]

30 min workout session with personal trainer. I can do pushups again! Not many (4 sets of 5 each) but they didn't hurt my shoulder. Progress!!

It's amazing how she keeps things interesting, rarely repeating the same exercises between sessions and clearly building some progressions as I get stronger.

10 min stretching. In hopes that some good stretching today would compensate for not so good stretching yesterday...

hiking 3:45:47 [3] 9.73 mi (23:12 / mi) +326m 21:01 / mi

Training hike with Valerie getting ourselves ready for two upcoming ARs. Goal was ~10miles in around 4 hours and we pretty much nailed that. We took several short breaks for various reasons - bathroom, picture taking, shoe changing, penguin rescuing (see Valerie's log) - but mostly just kept plodding along.

Which is about what we hope to do in the actual races so it's all good.

biking 22:32 [3] 2.52 mi (8:56 / mi) +70m 8:14 / mi

See Valerie! I really did get my bike out. :)

It wasn't pretty but I rode around the streets for 20 minutes just remembering how to shift gears and all. My bike is very old and the gears are a little bent and I can only use a small subset of them but I think it's enough to get me around the AR course in 6 weeks.

I need to 1) build up some seat endurance (just 20 minutes was plenty) and 2) build up the courage to take it on some trails.

hiking 52:06 [3] 2.88 mi (18:05 / mi) +85m 16:34 / mi

And then a hike around the meadow loop after shedding most of the layers I had on. I thought it would be cold on the bike on the downhills but I didn't realize quite how warm it was out. I thought it was about 50 when in reality it's 65. What a beautiful day! All my bulbs are pushing up and the crocuses are all blooming.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

5 minute warmup (fast walking across campus)

30 minute Personal Trainer. I asked her to do somethings for the muscles on the outside and inside of the legs and we did. And a bunch of ab and core and arm as well. Basically, she ramped it up a notch today. I predict I will be sore tomorrow.

10 minute stretch: did some much needed stretching.

hiking 1:36:35 [3] 4.44 mi (21:45 / mi) +199m 19:06 / mi

Despite it being a beautiful day, I wasn't really into this. Slept almost 11 hours last night so I think I'm fighting off a cold or something. I feel okay but didn't feel like pushing things so I didn't.

Wore my new purple icebugs. They seem like they will be good orienteering shoes.

swimming 18:42 [3] 0.65 km (28:46 / km)

Really didn't feel like doing this so made a deal with myself: go to the pool but only do about half of what I usually do. I pushed a little harder and felt and was a little faster. But, I started kicking too much making my toes cramp from pointing my feet and then making my knee really hurt a few times since I was really straightening my legs in order to kick and my knee doesn't like it when I make my leg try to go straight. So then I had to stop a few times to work out the kinks. But, on average, the lap times were a good 5-10 sec faster.

strength & stretching 7:00 [3]

In the pool, working out the toe cramps and just getting some good stretches in.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

10 min warmup - up and down a stairwell near the workout room, alternating jogging up with double stairs.

30 min workout with trainer

5 min stretching (should have been longer). Need to come up with some sort of routine for this.

hiking 2:28:09 [3] 6.51 mi (22:45 / mi) +252m 20:19 / mi

A very muddy trek on the Wissahickon trails. Took the trail that is officially closed - saw lots of bikes headed that way and several hikers come from there so figured I'd give it a try. It was fine except for being really muddy but I felt very guilty the whole time.

hiking 54:32 [3] 2.9 mi (18:48 / mi) +87m 17:13 / mi

Slog around the meadow loop with Sandy. Studded icebugs worked great in the snow/ice/mud.

Note

School canceled for the snow storm. Not sure we'll get the predicted 8-12" but I'm glad I don't have to drive today. I've been getting up early and leaving for school around 6:15 or 6:30 so that I don't sit in traffic and they didn't cancel things last night so I kept checking this morning and nothing was posted. Granted it didn't start really snowing until about 5am but around 6:30 I was thinking oh crap, I might really have to go in. I decided to give it 15 more minutes figuring with all the other things that were closed traffic probably would still be okay and - phew! - they finally officially closed around 6:35.

Only downside for me is that the personal training session was also canceled. I'm thinking though that cleaning all the snow off the walkways and the car will certainly give my arms a workout.

Might be a good day to resurrect the core dvd.

strength & stretching 5:00 [3]

Well that was a bust. I'd be surprised if we got more than 2". Didn't take long to shovel - a lot had already melted - and the hardest part was cleaning off the car and that only because I'm too short to easily reach all of the roof.

I'm still glad I didn't have to drive in this morning during the worst of it, and I'll definitely take the day off.

strength & stretching 40:00 [3]

Ha. I did not wimp out. Core DVD. Side planks are still my nemesis.

hiking 53:26 [3] 2.88 mi (18:33 / mi) +89m 16:56 / mi

What a gorgeous day. Had a dentist appointment in the middle of the afternoon and school work to get done in the morning and I had committed to digging my bike out of my shed and seeing if riding is still an option and, well, by the time I checked the time this was all I could fit in. Too bad - definitely the nicest day we've had in a while and a longer outing would have been better.

swimming 32:00 [3] 1.05 km (30:29 / km)

Only meant to do 1km but lost count and did an extra lap. Only forgot to punch twice.

Really bad cramping today in my left calf and even a bit in the hamstring; feet weren't too bad. Luckily it only started the last 5 or so laps. But bad enough that when I was climbing out of the pool I almost fell. Need to figure out what the cramping is all about. Need more salt in my diet maybe?

strength & stretching 50:00 [3]

Really good 30min workout with the personal trainer today. Worked up a good sweat and my abs were working hard. Did 20 minutes of warm up and stretching before starting with her.

OK - tried to load the track to DOMA using QuickRoute. Clicking on the snippet gets you the full map with my tracks. Now to figure out how to actually send you to the map in DOMA.

And success after only a few tries!

This was not anything exciting. I'm setting a beginner/sprint event there in May and I wanted to check to see which trails were usable with the old map and which had changed significantly enough that I shouldn't be in the area. For instance, there's a new small parking lot where the track starts and stops. Anyway, it was good practice for remembering how to use QuickRoute and learning how to use DOMA.

A random wander in the Wissahickon. Still feeling a little bleah but better.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Go there 15 minutes early ready to warm up but Kelly (the personal trainer) was there and ready to go and I wasn't overly ambitious today so we just started with some easyish things with no weights (stepping with high knees and walking lunges which I usually do with weights) and called it the warmup.

Not a good day teaching-wise; kept making mistakes on the board. I would stand there puzzled because I knew something didn't make sense but it would take a while to figure out and sometimes it was a doozy not just an algebraic mishap. My poor students are probably so confused about now.

I'm going to blame it on still feeling lethargic.

Note

Felt like I had been run over by a truck overnight. Very sore and just no energy at all. Decided to just rest today even though it would have been a nice day for a hike. Slept 10 hours instead of my usual 8 and still felt tired all day. Not sick though - knock on wood - just completely spent.
