strength & stretching 30:00 [2]

Some much needed core work.

Note

DDR - am improving. Nothing great, but can clear a couple of 3 and 4 footers and have started working on light instead of beginner.

running 52:37 [3]

TNT - Clem, Karl, Sandy

Did 3 miles on the drive at about 10 minute pace. At one point Sandy and I were going to split up but there was a guy on the drive in the dark doing nothing - no dog or anything - so we decided it would be better to stick together.

Yoga/Pilates 40:00 [1]

Didn't really get into the class. Spent a lot of time not doing much. Unusual.

orienteering 35:46 [4]

Training at Fatlands. Designed an exercise with 6 controls south of a big berm and 6 north and a couple courses that crossed back and forth once, four times or 7 times. Alison and I did the 4 cross version. About 10 folks showed up. It did what I wanted - got a little navigational practice and a little running in the terrain practice. Did pretty well but definitely room for improvement. Eric W. helped hang which was good since this way I only had seen half the controls and he graciously hung the ones that were further away from the berm so required a tad more navigation.

map hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Hanging controls for the training. Picked a few control locations that looked good on paper but were pretty weak in the terrain. Good practice. Hung using a 1:5000 map and ran on a 1:10000.

Note

Tried something new with epunching. Had folks download into a master station unconnected to a computer. When I got home I was able to read the master station into the event and produce results. Very cool - means that epunching for training is very doable.

TNT - track workout with Clem and Tom

Felt like the first time in weeks (feels like months but it's probably not that long) that I've been able to do anything beyond shuffle around the track. Warmer weather? Built the iron back up? Didn't let anyone suck me into starting too fast? Who knows. Did 2 laps while I decided what to do, then 10 where I'd sprint the far straightaway and recover the rest of the way around, then 1 lap cool down. Averaged about 10 minute pace.

Time includes a little stretching, and the walks to and from the track to the cars, which to me is all part of the workout. :)

running 54:00 [3]

TNT - with Sandy, Karl, Greg

3 miles on the drive at about 10:15 pace on average plus the down and up. Started slowly and picked it up near the end. I actually enjoyed this workout which I haven't been able to say for quite a while.

The inaugural DVOA Venla team training!

Yoga/Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good class - lots of strength stuff. We were relegated to a raquetball court which sounds awful, but gives us walls to use so we did lots of poses that are tough to balance but we could cheat and use the wall. Worked on some headstand and forearm stand poses (with feet on the wall). After class did some handstands which was fun and worked on backbends which I like to work on by walking down the wall backwards instaed of pushing up from the ground - easier on the knees.

trail 1:15:00 [3]

Not sure what to call this workout. Walked a couple of miles on the drive at a brisk pace and jogged most of the way home. About 5 1/2 miles all together.

hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Hiked over to Chestnut Hill and back. I did walk but was walking at a pretty good clip.

trail 28:35 [3]

Trail run in the snow after the walk. Downhills were fun in this snow - I didn't worry about the footing at all.

Note

All set for a StepMania workout and can't get it to work. :(

running 40:00 [3]

TNT at the track with Clem and Tom.

A pretty cool workout on the snow covered, ice crusted track at the high school. I had fun running laps trying to tread lightly enough not to break the surface. Only could ever manage 3 steps in a row with going through. Didn't push it, had fun. 19F when I got back to the car and there was a good wind to boot.

Dinner afterwards with Dasha joining us. Can we get both a Venla and Jukola team?

Note

Had to cancel TNT due to work commitments. :(

Yoga/Pilates 1:15:00 [1]

Had a funny twinge in my hip joint last night and earlier today; the stretching in yoga class seems to have cleared it up.

Sunday Feb 11, 2007 #

trail 1:34:29 [1]

A trail "run" where I walked the downhills, ran the uphills and split the flats. Tried to do whatever would keep the outing fun. Got pretty cold near the end - should have tried to get out a little earlier. I really am lucky to have this park with the miles of trails right in my backyard.

running 40:31 [3]

Three miles on the drive at 10:30 pace plus the 9 minutes to get down. Took it nice and easy - the goal being to enjoy myself.

Really pretty down there today - lots of ice all over the place reflecting the sun, the creek completely frozen over in places which doesn't happen very often.

hiking 18:21 [1]

Walked home a round about way through the woods looking for the big pits I know are there; only found one - can't remember where the others are.

TNT - the die hards

Very cold night so didn't want to use distance as a gauge and didn't want anyone to feel compelled to go at my pace (while safe enough, it would be a little foolish to run alone at night in the park) so convinced everyone to do hill repeats instead. So about 15 minutes to get to the covered bridge, ran the hill for 30 minutes, and then home. Did 6 hills in 30 minutes - walked the first one to warm up, then ran progressively further up the hill each of the next 5. The guys did more. Nothing spectacular but a good workout for me. Short of breath on the jog on the drive back home and we weren't going particularly fast.

Note

For the first time I can remember, we didn't see a soul the whole time we were in the park. I imagine anyone seeing our headlamps going up and down the hill would have had a hard time trying to figure out what was going on. I really enjoyed this workout because I had company but no pressure to do any more than I wanted. Interesting that last year I remember being glad that I was running with others because it was pushing me to do more and this year I sometimes don't like running with others because it pushes me to do more.

Yoga/Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

An easier session with mostly stretching and not much strength. Arms are sore - fell a couple of times on Saturday so I expect that's why.

Sunday Feb 4, 2007 #

hiking 20:00 [1]

A long walk over to Chestnut Hill (read: down to the creek and up the other side and then back down and up again to get home) to do some shopping. I'll log the uphills since I tried to push them hard even though I was walking. Hey - right now, given how I've been feeling, I'm logging anything that's remotely close (or not even that close) to real training.

map hiking 1:40:00 [1] ***

Hanging controls with Allison for the training. Mishung one control - know what I did now but in the pressure to get them all hung before people showed up, I goofed. Hung the controls backwards from the way the course went.

orienteering 39:15 [3]

Ran the short course ( a 3.1km loop - the medium and the long criss-crossed back and forth across the loop) to get back so I could download splits. Missed one control and had to climb a couple contours back up the hill - there's an unmapped charcoal terrace on the hillside that I mistook for a mapped one. Saw it when we were hanging but forgot.

Note

Nice turnout for the impromtu training. Cold but nice and sunny.

TNT

Went round and round the track for a while; sometimes slow and sometimes even slower.
