Sotunki.

Leg 3 For Bristol OK 1 - team 258.
Due to injurys and no shows, I was able to have a blue ribon leg this year. Leg 3 the long night, the first time i've done this at Jukola. After my issues last lear I deceieded to aim to do more of my own thing when necessary.

I was both nervous and excited before the start. I thought with alex and neil before me we should go out in quite a reasonble postion. They both had solid runs, and Neil passed across in 344th - and it was still dark.

I pushed a bit out of the field, and got on the back of a group. My number one was fairly easy in general terms as it was on the edge of the slop. I thought on descending the slope that I had to turn left, under the cliff and in. I did this, but things did not start to appear, so I had to relocate I was somewhere north of the control. Had to go back close to where i was. doo. +3 mins.
Then on #2 i took it easy towards the lake, but ended up in some fairly dense untracked green, then as I approached I got turned somehow, and had to relocate quickly before hitting it. +1 min. Didn't run as straight as i could've out of 5, but fairly into the race now. #7 looked tricky and i decieded i would go out to the path. I never really hit it htough, and instead ran a line to the left, which wwas probably sub optimum. hestitant on #9. On 10 I stuck with people around and ran south out to the track. Got stuck in a bit of green, then quick on the track to the southern tip of OOB, then went up onto the rock and straight across, unfortuantly this was a bit slow ontop. Should've stayed down and approached via 11 (+2min). Starting to get light now. 11 12, on a back of a big pack. with a navigator who knew there stuff resulting in a quick time. Pushed to 14, but disected the bridges, decieded the stream didn't look too bad, so went into it. Ended covered in grey mud, some of which (1 week and many showers later is still stuck to where i tape on my feet!
Was so legtharic at this point, checked out other gaffle, just incase i had miscounted my fields....

Exited a little too North towards the oob on way to 17, missing the track. Then good route through the big marsh. Little bit too right when attacking it, then corrected fairly quickly. Not much tracking in places now. Went straight to 19, not very tracked. Hooked sock on tree and ended up with leg suspended on air.
So tired now that i started looing for 20 way too early. Been gaining places since #11 now. Just pushed through to the end, so tired. With a swede from umea, playing tortoise and hare. Push push push, feeling effects of being not 100%, but still going. Get into ramp with a burst of speed, but then have to slow down.... Still have nearly 3.0 min/ks at the end. Hand over to Adam. Job done.

After my bad start on #1 I gained 27 places. Pretty pleased with that run. Only annoyed by #1 and then a few other rough orienteering bits. maybe 10 mins of mistakes all up. But it's difficult to be clean. Physically held it together, and pleased with pacing, food etc.

Think on #1 looking at the GPS we followed the earlier elephant tracks to the left, I should've relised this. *will nail #1 next year*

Overall leg postion 357 which is alright, I suspect a few that beat me didn't do the first half on the dark.

Another great Jukola. The rest of the team did us proud to be top british team (311th) just sneaking ahead of SYO and holding of Ravinen 3 (defacto brtish)

Orienteering 2:00:00 [2]
shoes: Jalas Olway

Did two training runs on finland maps.
The firs map 5 by the lake, mostly with adam. I ws tailing him, then I took over for one leg, and made an embrassing ballsup. Then more of my own. Jogged back.

Had three delightful swims in the lake, whilst we waited for the others.

Then went to the far side of the map, and did most of the controls. Convinved my compass is kapoot. Good training.
