Leg 2 - Night - Bok A
Mark B did the job on first leg, putting me out in front of the main bunch, with SYO, and Lakeland in a breakaway infront. It all went fine at the start, with me getting into the map and terrain , learning a few things about it. Going into 8, I saw Heather from lakeland, and was prob only 60 s down. Then coming out of 8 back to the track i'd come in from it went wrong. I was just looking at my map further on in the leg, and then thought i'd found the track, but hadn't then got confused as too where it was. Paniced and I just tried to bash through green shite. This involved going 180 degs back onto myself at times, and then knocked me headlight off. The beam proceeded too go straight into my right eye, and i couldn't see anything out of my right eye for about 30 s. Anyway eventually got out, relocated and went to #9 but lost 2.5 mins.
Going up to 16, I stuck on the near side of the river, looking for the track junciton, which i'd told me self was a weak plan, and it was. Never saw the junction, crossed way too high up, had to relocate and loop back, which cost me about 1min 40s - really stupid and really poor orienteering. Got caught by a young guy from FVO here, and we hammered it round the spectator loop to the finish (I was trying desperatly to hang on!). Apart from those big mistakes, prob only lost 20 s to #7 off tracking it. So 4.5 mins mistakes all up. Was generally going about the same speed as barrable who was clean and did 41.19.
So it went pretty much like every relay run I've done this year, not a major disater, but made too many big mistakes. Need to work on this for next year.
Generally pretty happy with team result - 2nd overall behind SYO. We managed to stay infront of FVO through the night. When SYO ran like they did it was as good as we could've done!
Great event, with uni students showing how it should be done.
