Thoughts on JWOC relay:
Overall the kiwis did very well I thought during the event, and cool to see a big team.
I think on the relay they underperformed though (and cost me another villa sweepstake :). I have some thoughts why.
I think it's generally due to the lack of comptitive relay running in NZ. I was amazed by how quickly the relays spread out compared to an elite relay. Although it was cool to see a photo of the guys running at the front out of the pen, this is generally a bit of a bad idea. And lots of them seemed to be looking at the map too much. looking at the preivous results of the middle, a par performance would've been roughly 9th and 15th, rather than actual 13th and 21st.
I don't know how to fix this without transporting NZ to short haul flying distance to europe :) As the kiwis miss out on a lot of camps, and top level comptition, so there results are bloody good. And the rest of the world are blissfully unaware - while chatting with a GBR team member he stated his amazment that NZ had to pay to come to the event! so naive.
Also I'm not convinced the team selection/order was optimum , maybe need someone slightly less conected with the team to decied with the athletes.

PS Portugals on the way up in the orienteering world, lookout!

Orienteering race 1:18:40 [4] 8.2 km (9:36 / km) +200m 8:33 / km
shoes: VJ Intergrator

Dolomites 5th day
Val Canali - Piazmador

Desperate to have a good run today after not being focussed yesterday. Decieded not to follow my man from vasteres, as he runs quite fast in the wrong direction. Pretty clean, a few wobbles through the first 8 (2 mins total), went over on ankle near the end which probably cost me 1 min.

So pretty happy with 65th. I like how elite in europe punishes your mistakes, completly different from NZ.

65th Winner Francois Gonon 53.46 vroom

Thoughts on Italien 5 days.
Excellent, generally did what needed to be done, with an army of voluenteers. Good terraine, courses, maps, areanas, buses, Discos.
Pity they put a control in the wrong place, blatently. Even though it was in the circle it was in a curvy ditch 10ms higher.

And maybe i have to admit in my old age i now seem to be better at classics than middles. As my nav is still not smooth enough to really dominate the middle. Whereas in the long the juniors don't have the endurance. I still perfer a good middle though.

Dolomitees 4th day - middle
San Martino - Centro

The middle final terraine, the only say which we had the same terraine as JWOC.
Very cool area, completly wasn't with it, not focused, had first start, blew 1,2,3 and a whole heap more. 7 was in the wrong place, and took me a long time to find. Really bad race only spiked 8/22.
Kudos to the juniors

Orienteering race 46:02 [4] 4.8 km (9:35 / km) +260m 7:33 / km

Dolomites - 3rd day middle
San Martino Sud
Thought i had a reasonble run, small wobbles early, good route to 6 (which i thought might be conservative, but was also quick). Then proceded to blow 2.5 mins on the long route choice (went straight) and drop 10 places again! brrr.
74th.

Dolomites Day 2
Passo Rolle - North

Decieded to be more agressive today. Was going well to number 9. Be that time the weather had turned to shite, I was wearing a light top and we were at 2000 m. Did a real shite route to 10, where i changed my mind, lost 4 mins and 10 places, even though i was clean on the control. Then a bit rough to the finish, a bit demovitated and cold
69th again.

The JWOC guys ran on the other side of the road in some funky terraine, the kiwis did well, pity georgia blew out on one control. Defintly evident that juniors are less consistent than seniors.

Orienteering race 1:40:15 [4] 9.0 km (11:08 / km) +330m 9:25 / km
shoes: VJ Intergrator

Dolomites day 1
Caltena - S.Giovanni

Getting used to terraine, a few medium mistakes, felt quite slow, a lot of reverse flow. And ended up 69th, so obviously running ME was going to be pretty comptitive as i didn't have any major cockups with the biggest one (number 13) probably being 1 min.
Cool to be able to walk to start from villa, and then drink beer, watch juniors run past house on sprint course. Intresting to note the vast difference in how competent people looked whilst running, even amongst the top nations (eg sweden).
