Orienteering race 1:16:12 [4] 7.8 km (9:46 / km) +180m 8:46 / km

Harvestor relays, Merthyr Common, South Wales,
4 leg dark/dawn (cause i took too long!)
Unfortuneantly some of the runners before me had lost big time, and we were 40 mins down on SYO, Fvo and 20 mins back on shouc when I went out, on the last night leg in 6th postion, With HOC and OUOC 10 mins ahead.
I was pretty confident I could catch Ian webb (OUOC), but was really suprised to see him at 3!! I then setlled in with conservative route choices (running to top of hills etc), until number 7. Coming out of 7, it felt like a waratah had gone through the front of my left foot. After checking it hadn't, and as it was a relay i pushed on adopting a strange running style (stranger than my style already).
Was not reading map going into num 9, had no idea where i was, couldn't find pond by track to relocate, then the 2 runners i had passed showed up. couldn't relocate off the first hill, managed too eventually off the second. Think i'd been roughly in the correct area the whole time, but don't really now, and didn't care much. lost about 14 mins. Bugger.
Then nailed 10, bit shaky on 12, Then as i was going down to 14 I couldn't make sense of anything, I think cause i was reading the form lines as contours, and ended up well below it and had to head back up, passing a runner coming down who said something like "you're going the wrong way" with me thinking no, you are. 2.5 mins
Then sloopy out of spectator, and in too finish, and tom wasn't quite there! fooled by my shorter spectator loop.
So went +2 and bought us into 4th. Really pissed off by 9, where i was not concentrating. Otherwise thought my race was quite good, easier than i imagined it would be.
The boys (tom and tim in particuarly having very good runs) consildated our 4th position. With big gaps either side. So BOKs highest placing in recent times - 5th last year. The top SYO team was decimated, by craneys stag do, but then we were missing our best runner too due to it.
We were a long way back on 1,2,3. But i still think we could do better, with our team. There's always next year.
