Nearly missed start after underesitmating the time to get there. A bit kerfuffled.
Slow on 1, stopped too soon then remembered it was a 1:15 map. Messed around at 2. Lacked hill strenght going up to 3. ON 4 I went tracks to north, but stupidly Cut in over hill and ballsed it up rather than staying to fence corner, Then lost time on 5, 7 - in control detail. Straight to 8 which was quick but drifted a bit left. 9 went through stone and then ended up way to the right, and just couldn't shake this other guy who was also orienteering pretty badly (Ian webb I think from splitbrowser).
After the map exchange I settled down, and had no medium mistakes, only small ones (17,20, 29) Was conservative on 21 went track to the north and it payed off. Caught tom at 23 (suprised) and hoped he would push me, but he didn't stay with me.
Overall technically shaky at start, but then came right and nailed most of the tricky ones. I guess I made about 4 mins worth of mistakes, mostly in the first section up to 10 (3.5 mins).
Physically felt a bit weak, particuarly on hills - and not as strong as JK. Hills is normally my strength so a bit suprised. Also annoying that i did not manage to run with anyone for any lenght of time (unlike tim & jo, Matt & scott), as i generally went through people in my start block. took on 4 squeezys.
Place 20/43 Gotta be happy with a 20th in British elite long champs. £10 banked from the saunders benevolent fund. would've like to have beaten tim and John, but they were moving quicker than me (good BOK results :), so i couldn't really have improved my placing.
Winner Oli 97.48 so ~+29 %
JK was + 34 % so that's an improvement which suprises me but i'll take that on my longest (distance) course ever.
