After faffing about waiting for Jess to get ready didn't have much time for a warm-up so just trotted off tot he start with her.

Faffed around before start waiting for Jess, then due to her bad back warm-up was rather sedate. Just made it to start on time, but wasn't really in right frame of mind when starting and just ran off into the forest. As a result completely messed up 1st control, faffing around in the area between #1 and #2, and eventually relocated off #2 (2mins). Unfortunately as I'd had to hire a dibber having misplaced mine between last night's event and this mornings, I took the dibber out too quickly and no punch was recorded at 1st control :( Quickly returned back to #2 overtaking George S in the process as he was a bit off line, and got into the course a bit better after this. Took the straight option through the next few controls, but was a bit hesitant to #3 stopping about 10m short and trying to work out where control was (10s). Completely messed up #7 as I went off line in the woods and stupidly thought the big hill N of control was the one E of control. Went round the north side of it, and although control wasn't where I thought, punched a control in a depression which was left over from last night's event. Didn't check code and went off to #8 and got my Buff caught on a tree which distracted me as I tried to run whilst putting it back on. Should have realised I'd not been to correct #7 as hit fence corner N of #9, but thought I'd just exited control a funny direction after faffing with Buff and headed back towards #8 and saw Nick B just ahead of me crossing the track (2mins). Got Buff finally sorted out and chased down the hill after Nick, and also saw Ed N leaving control ahead of me. Caught up with the 2 of them (and George S as well) to #9 and took the lead to #10 as Nick went straight and I overtook the other 2. Ed was running well and went back past on the climb to #11, but then went S of houses to #12 whereas I went N and took Nick with me. Quick down to #13, then another mistake to #14 as contoured round the hill but dropped down too early. Ed and Nick both folllowed and lost same amount of time, but I worked out where control was first but got in just after George who'd gone straight and caught back up (45s). Tried to get away from the train and was taking the direct routes to the next few controls, and also spent less time on the timed out crossing. Good few the next few controls and maintained the gap to the others. Lost a bit of time at #26 as I hesitated just S of control expecting reentrant to be a bit more obvious. Good through to the finish maintaining gap to Nick and Ed.
Gutted to be disqualified, but completely my own fault. Other than mistakes at 2 and 7/8 was runnign well enough for a top 5, so not too bad for lack of running training.

Thought I was starting 10mins earlier than I did so quite a hard run to the start, though this meant I had time to do full set of drills and strides before starting. Easy run with Barrable afterwards disucssing the merits of brighter vs dimmer lights.

I think this was my first British Night Champs since Penhale Sands many years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Due to lack of terrain running recently played it safe on the majorty of legs and used the path option, though felt that a lot of the controls were too close to tracks for a true technical challenge. Fine through the first section to the bridge. Used the fence to bounce off for #8, overshot #10 (50s), used the fence to #11, then fine through the next section. Couldn't find path I wanted to take to #15 so ended up doing a fair bit extra distance trying to find a way through the green. No punch at #18, but didn't spend long looking for it, but this threw me a bit and I lost time on the slope to the south of #19 trying to work out where I'd come up from the road (4min). Good through the next section, but then another big mistake at #29. Came off path using compass and lost concentration due to a lot of people milling around. Took a long time to relocate off the hills/depressions (5min). Saw Nick B leaving control so speeded up a bit on the next leg to catch him up, got ahead before #30 as he hesitated. Carried speed through onto next leg but was over confident and went past #31 about 10m to the right but thought it was further on (40s). Nick took the lead back but missed #33 slightly so I got back ahead, but was hesitant dropping down to #35 which let him back in front.
Good to have a bit of pressure through the last bit as hadn't really been pushing it before then, but was happy enough with performance. Was getting worried after an hour as my light started to dim, so took my spare out at the road crossing. Certainly wasn't much use when anyone with a good light was behind me as my light just got drowned out by their light. Certainly need to invest for next years night season. Disappointed to have 2 big mistakes costing 9mins, and a total of 10.30 lost.

Nice to be riding when it wasn't windy/raining/snowing/icy. Headed over to Addingham to post my Ilkley Moor fell race entry, but couldn't find Paul's house so returned home via Silsden, Keighley, Saltaire and Bradford. A couple of good climbs involved, especially Hollins Bank out of Silsden. Training has now started properly for Etape du Dales, so will be trying to get as much climbing in as possible. Thinking of ways to link up as many roads marked with a black arrow on OS maps as possible.
