Sweet! Recovery continued despite yesterday's half-race! So happy about that. Cough is also getting better although still a thing. Not marking myself sick today. Still don't think it's time for anything crazy, but plan is an easy jog to wake up the running muscles, core, and then coaching S's ski practice today!

Running 17:25 intensity: (6:19 @1) + (11:06 @2) 1.51 mi (11:32 / mi) +60m 10:16 / mi
ahr:127 max:148 shoes: HOKA Challenger ATR 6

Little neighborhood joggeroo. Breathing through the Skida buff. Definitely feel still recovering body-wise, but not too terrible. Tried to just go super-duper easy, ski walked the ups.
3 PM

XC skiing 1:09:27 intensity: (33:24 @0) + (36:03 @1) 1.56 mi (44:31 / mi) +6m 44:01 / mi
ahr:90 max:115

Some of S's Ford Sayre practice, when I remembered to turn my watch on and then a full half hour of skating practice with her afterwards. Totally cool she was so keen on that!

Practice went fine, but we have a new girl who is way less comfy on her skis than the rest, so we're limited in where we can get to on the fields to go play. Hannah, Riley, Rhea and Sylvia attempted a pretty big, scary, fast hill with a turn at the bottom. There were falls, but I am super-impressed by their courage in tackling it! Sonia also joined in for the final lap.

Well, definitely coming back from it and feeling better! Body Battery not so drained even with going skiing with S yesterday and more restored overnight and slightly lower RHR. But this was a major illness and I still sound terrible when I cough, so I won't really race today. My healing lungs/respiratory tract don't need that kind of challenge. I'm thinking of doing the first 45 min of my course and coming in. My decision not to really race is aided by the fact I forgot my mapholder at home...
9 AM

XC skiing 3:00 [1]

Warmup around the tiny circle
10 AM

Ski-O 54:14 intensity: (10:34 @1) + (43:19 @2) + (21 @3) 6.44 mi (8:25 / mi) +159m 7:49 / mi
ahr:131 max:158

Ski-O!!!

Felt ok-ish, but definitely still not 100%, so went with skiing half of my course going pretty easy. It was so much fun! Favorite was probably that teeny trail down the hillside from 3 to the marsh crossing (also pretty cool) and then 4. I may have been lucky to be the first starter and so to not have anyone else to dodge for that...

Body felt pretty weak, especially uphills and such. Tried to breathe through my neck gaiter as much as possible, which unfortunately was limited by having forgotten to put contacts in and so glasses fogging up. Ah well. Was a coughing mess at the end, but cough doesn't seem any worse than it has been now, 8h afterwards, so hopefully no huge harm done!

So great to see people, even if briefly!

We made it to Lake Placid! Think today will be just a spectating various ESG things day. I'll try to get S to come out to play on the White course in the afternoon, but won't force it given the temp, could quickly end in not-fun, especially if she's not super-psyched from the beginning...

Hope to see people tomorrow. One of the conditions of racing tomorrow would be not feeling feverish at all today, so we'll see if that happens!
2 PM

XC skiing 33:05 intensity: (16:17 @0) + (16:48 @1) 1.33 mi (24:53 / mi) +25m 23:32 / mi
ahr:90 max:124

Ski with Sylvia at the Cascade Welcome Center, which is just 4 min down the road from our AirBnB. Saw some controls out there! She did a great job for 4F - we tried her new skate skis, but wasn't great skate snow (no glide), so switched to classic. I felt good, no terrible coughing fits, breathed through thick Skida buff the whole time.

Not making terribly clear gains in health data here... but needing less outrageous amounts of sleep and not getting less restored, as measured by overnight Body Battery gain, at least... one thing the data don't reflect is how much acetominophen/ibuprofen I've been taking to control the fever. I think that's generally dwindling and fever symptoms are for sure becoming less prevalent, although did still feel feverish yesterday late afternoon, I've tended to have a fever spike then most days, as well as one in the morning.

This is all a bit much. I want to be better. By these data, this has been worse on my body than Covid (although note, I took Paxlovid). I hope the longer-term recovery is quicker. With Covid, it took 6 weeks for my resting heart rate to get back down to where I considered it normal. If it takes that long, ski season is over. =(

We're still planning on coming to ski-o. Depending on temps and Sylvia's willingness, I might take her on some abbreviated version of White tomorrow, and probably the same on Sunday. Sad to not really compete.
1 PM

Strength 11:11 intensity: (4:29 @0) + (6:42 @1)
ahr:92 max:109

Waxed my ski-o skis for Sunday, incase things really turn around and I can give that race a go. Also slapped some base prep on S's brand-new skate skis! Garage was quite cold.

But felt ok enough, so did core, halving the numbers on all exercises, except for knee-pushups, which were third-ed. Just saying hello to the muscles I hope to still use on the other side of this illness...

Coughing was pretty bad last night - turns out our household had run out of NyQuil. =( So far this morning not feeling feverish, but did take half a Dayquil dose at 7am for the cough supressant and it also has some acetaminophen as an anti-pyretic. It feels like my cough is in a positive feedback cycle where all the coughing just makes things more irritated so I cough more.

With recovery going so slowly, I think it's now clear I won't race either of the cold days - I need my lungs to get back to normal, not be set back by breathing frigid air. =( We plan to travel Friday after S's school day.

I'd like my RHR to be under 55 before I really attempt a workout. I think it should be under 50 to really race. I may get in a walk in the afternoon if the fever doesn't come back. I have not yet had 24h without fever since last Friday.
2 PM

Hiking 22:10 intensity: (14:48 @0) + (7:22 @1) 0.93 mi (23:50 / mi) +13m 22:52 / mi
ahr:88 max:104

Really easy walk in a fairly flattish direction. Breathing through thick Skida buff. Didn't have a coughing fit until about 15 min in, then had a series of a few, but was able to quiet them down.

It might be the most optimistic version of this weekend is I do a white course on Sunday with Sylvia...

Feeling a bit feverish afterwards, but did feel pretty much fine (other than the coughing) during. The main issues of this illness are definitely fever and coughing, not so much fatigue.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Hah! Didn't get all the way down to Body Battery of 5 yesterday and got above 51 last night! Not all the way better, but improvement. Still coughing like crazy though and respiratory tract feels pretty destroyed by this.

----

Activity of the day was picking S up from school and bringing her to DH ski lesson. I was probably outside for around 25 min total, was careful to breathe through a warm neck gaiter.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Still need to be in full-out rest mode. Not yet feverish today, hopefully that will maintain!

Hoping today to not plateau at a Body Battery of 5 by the end of the day...

---

Definitely doing a bit better today, not so feverish, HRV-measured stress not quite as high overall as yesterday. My activity of the day is going to go pick up both kids from daycare/ski practice as well as stop by the ski store to try to hunt down a Skida balaclava.

BUT, I am seriously contemplating skipping Friday's race. Sylvia wouldn't have to miss school, I will be more recovered from this illness on Sat than Fri and probably breathing frigid air isn't super-helpful for someone recovering from a bad respirtory infection... we'll see if I can be wise. It's probably the better call unless both respiratory and general symptoms are *way, way* better tomorrow.

---

Did still have a fever by the end of the day. What a bummer.
