Orienteering 52:00 [3]

Oof. Mixed feelings on this. Disappointed partly, because I had two really big mistakes (to 3 and to 10 - nearly or did run off the map to 10...). But I also got hit in the eye by a stick to either control 1 or 2, which ripped my left contact in two. My vision through my left eye for the rest of the race was really wonky, sometimes tearing up, sometimes just feeling the jagged contact and having the mixed correction in the two eyes.

Anyways, it could also have been that especially at the beginning, I was really pushing my ability to run and keep track of myself through the terrain and that led to the mistakes. And that's the line you have to play with in orienteering and I haven't necessarily done enough technical training to know exactly where that line is yet. So, in some ways, I'm also happy I just went for it, at a pace that (maybe! holy moly it was hot and maybe I couldn't have kept it up anyways) could have gotten me the best result possible.

And yes, so HOT. I was fully wiped coming through the arena passage, so needed the weakened gatorade and cold water dump that AJ provided. The final loop was just a slog. Finished and was so grateful for the cold water and ice put in my gps vest, really needed to cool down. I didn't have many more minutes of heating up before things would have been bad.

World Games Sprint!

Pretty happy with this. It was clear I was a bit rusty (kept trying to run past things, not used to 1:4000!), but saved myself from any big mistakes, perhaps just one poor route choice, but even that didn't sound that great the other way around. I liked taking the long route choice low, let me think and look ahead so I think it was a good choice. The finish was super-physical, a super-steep hill and then just simple controls that needed hustling in...

3 min back from the winner, 23rd overall and 29s back from top North American, Emma W!

Made it to Birmingham! Travel solo with the little guy wasn't too bad - we had a friendly great-grandma next to us on the first flight and got two seats to ourself on the second, during which he slept at least 45 min of too.

My mom took him to the zoo this morning while I did this training, he came back asleep and hugging a new stuffy leopard. =)

Middle model training went well - terrain is physical, contours have flavor and at least on this training map was easy to dial that in because visibility is really good. Water features are dry, cliffs might be nearly earth-banks on the sides of streams, dot knolls and pits quite small. But! Correctly-mapped rootstocks were such a treat! I just feel like it's so frequent that those are out of date on our maps, that it was just kinda fun to have them be spot-on!

Some last sprint orienteering training at RIT! Did some o-tervals. First one (this one) was really good training - once totally caught out by not looking ahead. Must look ahead to next control and at least know exit, esp with air punching. Expect fewer traps or crazy route choice legs than WOC for WG sprint (holy moly intricate WOC sprint!), but should be prepared, sure the most was made of the campus!

Running 1:57 intensity: (20 @0) + (1:36 @1) + (1 @3) 0.17 mi (11:30 / mi)

More sprint training. Hampered by construction. Made up a little of my own course at the end.

Running 3:36 intensity: (2:15 @1) + (1:21 @2) 0.36 mi (9:53 / mi)
