shoes: Jalas Black

"Warm" up for the Billypig. Sitting inside the car would have been a lot warmer. 11F start temp, which I beive is a new PR for coldest start for an endurance event. Day 2 of the Canadien Ski Marathon, 1986, might have been colder.

Billy Pig at Miami U Nature Area (1:10). Woods were fairly green, so just about every leg was an around route on trail followed by a short dive through the thick stuff. I'm pretty sure I've never run this hard for this long in an O-meet before. The temps were no problem as I was generating plenty of heat on my own.

Split with Tom Svobodny when he skipped early. Picked up Bill (who had also skipped early) and ran a good bit of the first loop with him. Met Tom again after my skip and we more or less ran together for the next 5 controls. Got some daylight on him on the long (2KM!) road run and was on my own after that. Tom ended up DNF'ing somewhere - I think it might have been early because he was in a pretty bad mood when we were running together. Then again, he might just think I'm a jackass; an opinion shared by a few others.

1st overall and Bill got 2nd. Made for a happy drive home.

With a good 90 minutes of near road-race intensity running in the legs, a warmdown was clearly in order. Checked some more of the trails. Really nice area.

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Easy jog round the hood to loosen up from yesterday. I've upgraded yesterday's run to a "3" because I shouldn't feel this stiff after 70 minutes of easy running on a trail. Should be OK for the BillyPig, but it was definitely more of an effort that I planned on.

Skating (Ice) 20:00 [2]

Moderately hot laps while Yaya took breaks.

Orienteering (Woods) 31:00 [2] ***

Haven't run on a map since the Trot, so I figured a tune-up session was in order. Did a short course at Babler (1:10). Stayed right on redline, even when there were good around routes because it's better contact training and also because I expect there to be some unpleasant sections tomorrow and I wanted to get myself in the mindset of pushing through rather than bailing at the first sign of trouble. Nav was really clean. Speed through thick stuff was so-so.

Note

On the work front, things are looking pretty good for the conversion. I'm giving it 50/50 that I can make it to the BillyPig.

Fleet Feet New Year's Run at Lost Valley. Ran up front with Dave Spetnagle, which meant I was going a bit faster than my usual base pace. Didn't have my HR monitor hooked up, but I'm pretty sure I was nudging into steady state territory. Everything was frozen solid which meant a lot of ankle movement with all the bike ruts. Didn't bother me as I had great grip with the studs, but I did rub the back of my heels a bit raw.

Tyson side of the Chubb plus the connector. A bit goopy in spots although things were freezing quickly on the return trip.

Note

Went over to Bill's and we partied like it was 1999. We didn't realize it until the end of the evening, but every wine we opened (including the sparkling cider for the kids!) was from the 1990's. I provided the New Year's Toast ('99 Laurant Perrier Brut), which I would have been proud of serving except that Bill busted out 4 (!) reds, all of which were good, two of which were very, very good. As usual, I came away from a dinner over there feeling not worthy, but it sure was a fun time had by all.

I'm not much for New Year's resolutions, but I really need to get back to training tomorrow.

Skating (Ice) 20:00 [2]

Took Yaya skating. Time only counts when I was skating by myself since she's still pretty wobbly.

Running (Road) 27:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

With everything frozen rock solid, I felt confident going for a morning run in road shoes. Mostly clear pavement with some patches of snow; grip was fine throughout. The ever-present central IL wind was mild, so the single-digit temps were quite tolerable. Actually, a rather pleasant run as the sun rose into a completely clear sky.
