Running (Grass) 18:00 [2]
weight:189lbs

Warmup/dn.

Orienteering race (woods) 34:05 [4] **** 3.2 km (10:39 / km) +120m 8:58 / km
12c

What better way to recover from a 14-hour race than running a short course? Ran the SLOC meet at Cliff Cave (1:7500). Not as clean as I would have liked, but not bad either. David decided to rest on his laurels so there was no chance to even the death match. Anna Shafer-Skelton ran really well. I wonder how much longer until she beats me at one of these things. map.

Orienteering race (Woods) 18:30 [4] **** 2.2 km (8:25 / km) +50m 7:33 / km

Ran the intermediate course, which was actually more technical than the advanced, it just cut out distance and the big climb. Much cleaner and moving through the light green a lot better, too.

Orienteering race (Woods) 40:00 [2] **
3c

Bonk Hard Chill AR with Dana Mareshie. Took it out slow and the nav was trivial (although that didn't stop the whole pack from blowing #1, we got a good chuckle out of the fact that we were one of the first ones there and had walked almost the whole way). Was around mid pack at the end of the run.

Paddling race (Kayak) 1:01:00 [2] **
1c

In a canoe using our own Kayak paddles. Really cold and windy. Second half was in the wider part of the lake with the wind in our faces. Held our position.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:57:00 [2] **
8c

Pretty easy loop, but enough true nav that we moved up quite a bit even though we didn't run much.

Paddling race (Kayak) 1:28:00 [3] **
4c

Brutally cold on the wide part of the lake. Paddled hard just to keep from freezing.

Running race (Road) 15:00 [2]

Up the road from the boat take out to the TA. Were told we were 2nd co-ed team.

Cycling race (Trail) 3:09:00 [2] *
8c

Huge mental error. We left the TA without checking out. Had to go all the way back from the first control which meant riding some tough single track three times instead of once (not to mention watching a whole bunch of teams pass us going the other way). 40-minute mistake. Other than that, it was a pretty straightforward bike section. Mostly singletrack with a few fire roads.

Running race (Mix) 35:00 [1]

Rather silly little scavenger hunt event. Was surprised to find that we finished this as third co-ed. I guess some of the guys who passed us just looked like girls.

Cycling race (Road) 1:13:00 [2] *
3c

Dana, who had been struggling a bit seemed to pick up some steam with the knowledge that we were still in the hunt. This section included a short bikewack. The only challenge was avoiding the redneck that was yelling at everybody.

Orienteering race (Woods/Night) 3:03:00 [2] **
5c

An otherwise excellent event spoiled by a truly horrible nav section. The map showed the old trail network which is geometrically the same as the new trail network, but the trails aren't even remotely in the same area. Had we had just follwed the trails we would have found the controls easily, but I kept trying to go to where the control circle was. Managed to find the old trails but, of course, no control. Probably dumped 90 minutes. Naturally, all the teams that couldn't read the map well enough at night to realize that the trails were all mapped wrong blew through the course with no difficulties.

Cycling race (Road) 35:00 [2] *
1c

Back to the finish. Not really sure of the split as I was too disgusted to care. Racing with Dana was great fun. She came through fine even though she is out of shape after recovering from knee surgery. I'm not really pissed at losing a placing since we really didn't expect to be competitive. Just too bad to see a race messed up like that. All the RD had to do was include a note saying the trails were mapped wrong and just to follow them. David Frei managed to figure it out. He and Jeff won the thing. Death match 1-0 David.

weight:192lbs

I wonder how much higher that weight number can go before Peter starts calling me fat. Actually, the gain this week is intentional - I always let it go up a couple pounds before a long event.

A short workout would have been nice, but instead I spent the evening sorting through my gear for this weekend's Bonk Hard Chill.

400@91, 800@2:58, 1600@5:57, 800@2:51, 400@77 all 400R. Last one was a bit quick for the spirit of the workout, but felt fine.

Note

Oh, by the way. The unemployed thing was a lot shorter than I had hoped. Back to work today.
