mntn bike 1:10:00 [3]

Not sure of times yet, so guessing. Started on the bikes. Great choice for starting this many racers on bikes as there was plenty of room for passing over pretty much the entire course. Great course for going fast. I think we were off the bikes 2-3 times and better riders may have never been off (except maybe the one big deep bog). I don't know if Will has ridden since end of May. He picked up his brand new Kona late Friday night so this was literally his first ride on it and it performed well, even though he struggled a bit! :-) I never even thought to put a tow on my bike, because he was biking much better than I at EA. He drafted as best he could and I pushed him a little on the few small hills at the end. Luckily there were no big climbs on the course so he was able to push through pretty good. I saw in DD 11's report that they were third off bike, so we must have been second.. 'cause we weren't first. Great bike course that gives a little edge to experienced riders but isn't (too?) discouraging for novices. Also, next to no FDF's - might have got 5 bites max and hardly even pestered!!!

paddling 40:00 [3]

We chose to portage into Koshlong to reduce time on our feet (and my knees). It's only a 10-12 minute portage, so while likely not the most efficient route choice it allowed us to do more paddling (our strongest discipline) and get our money's worth out of the rental! :-)

In the end it was a great choice because Will was having stomach (poop) problems so it allowed for some recovery... and we were not fast on our feet this race until... that comes later :-)

The Paddle was broken up by the portages and some CP gathering.

trekking 6:00:00 [3]

After the bike we went straight to the CD dive which was pretty easy as there were about 100 cd's still in the water... good choice by us! ( I don't know if I ever got my bonus for finding that 'extra' mask on my dive :-)). Then we ran up to Ursala at the Sling Shot.. after the cutest sling-shot explanation in the history of the world (not by Ursala, but the little girl helping out) I got lucky and nailed it on my second shot. We then grabbed the Audio CP and ran back for the canoes (after retrieving the extra map that I left in eth gear bin :-( ). I had one big bobble looking for 32? off the SUP. I got P.O.'d and we bailed on it with the intent of catching it later if we had time. I then got myself 'into' the map and had no more Nav issues.

By the time we got the northern CP's I knew we were moving too slow to clear the course (on top of my earlier bobble) and Will was hurting pretty good/bad. I started re-strategizing what we would need to drop from the plan.

We left two CP's north west of Bark Lake. Never went back for my bobble and 42. We skipped the tube paddle and left the 3 high pointers to the far south... I think that's everything we missed.

We got to see the CHAMPS on Attack From Above a couple of times on the course and the Gally's a couple of times.. along with some other familiar faces. We even got to hit 4 CP's with Hamer and Tarno (2 with us 'leading' and two with them 'leading'). I really enjoyed chatting as well as observing how a 'Real' orienteer goes about his business in this type of race. Biggest difference... I look at my map 10 times for every time they look at theirs!! :-)

With about 45 Minutes left we were at 50(?) Not enough time to get 8? and get back, but enough time to get 30 and make it back. Hammer and Tarno already had 30 so they went straight to the finish (I think). Will and I went and bagged 30 and suddenly he decided he felt awesome and made me run sub 5 min kms back to the finish ... after 7.5 hours of racing!!!

The race was great. The weather was perfect. Even the bugs co-operated!! My first visit to Rockstar and I will be back for sure. Next time I will make sure I can stick around and make a fool of myself after it's all done!

I only know two team's scores and they both kicked our butts... no idea how far back we finished but I think it'll be up tomorrow.

Note

Oh Yeah

We saw a small (lanky) bear about 2/3 of the way through the bike. He was bookin' it!!
