I'd better write this up before I forget what happened. This day was pretty miserable. There are many things I would like to blame it on, but mostly I just sucked. Three big errors:
#1 - I didn't really see any very good route choice that I liked. Decided the best was to go straight, figuring the reentrant would catch me. I measured and counted until I thought I was far enough, found a shallow reentrant with a nice, mappable tree, but no control. Figured if that wasn't it, I hadn't gone far enough and kept going. Hit a control on a clearing and guessed at where I might be (apparently correctly according to the track). Wandered off in the right direction then saw someone come in to the control and got it. I actually thought that I might have originally been too high in the reentrant at first, until I saw my track.
#5 - Tried to go fairly straight, with some aim off to the right, figuring again that the reentrant would catch me. I passed control #8, but was convinced I was further north than that and didn't check the code (BAD), otherwise I might not have made this mistake. When I hit the line of cliffs near #9, I still thought I was more north and relocated improperly, eventually hitting #6. This time I did check the code and realized where I was. Lots of time lost on this one!
#13 - MIssed the open area and that confused me when I got to the other side of the ridge, so I just wasn't sure which way to turn and made a stupid choice before going back the other way.
Things that I would like to blame this poor performance on include:
- Red Eye flight meaning not well rested
- Rain, fogged up glasses, general blindness
- Too many trees in the way
But, unfortunately, really I just sucked.
