Note
(sick) (rest day)

the weekend was great, but arrived home Sunday night with a fever, very sore throat, and lots of other general yuckiness with nose and head. went to bed very early and tried to rest as much as possible today

Note

did some pushups at work with Tyler. I faced him and tried to mimic his speed, style, and number of repetitions. I ended up succeeding since my efforts made him laugh and have to eventually stop. Good thing because I was getting tired...

orienteering race (long) 1:40:31 [4]
shoes: Falcon O shoes

Jordan let me wear one of his GPS watches (and I didn't forget to press stop at the finish this time). It was really really really cool to be able to look at my route afterwards. Bobbles on a handful of the controls, slow in general, but my only huge mistake was #14. Stupid green. I attribute my mistake mostly to route choice. If I had taken ten more seconds to look at the map and pick a route choice I would have seen the better choice to use the trail then I probably would have cut up following the stream as Ali did, though Sam's route to the west of that might have been faster. I ended up crawling on my hands and knees through green for 5 minutes before giving up on reaching the other side then retreating back out only to get lost in other green later (on my feet this time). Notes to self: Crawling is really slow. If I have to do that, pick a different route choice.

Event: Hickory Run

orienteering (middle) 42:32 [3] 3.9 km (10:54 / km) +110m 9:33 / km
shoes: Falcon O shoes

middle distance race.

nothing disastrous happened, but I made mistakes on almost every control. I also seemed to check way too many controls that weren't mine. I was also just moving too slowly. I could have run faster. The notable mistakes were:
1- took the worse route choice on the trail to the south and checked two other controls before finding mine.
5- apparently wasn't paying enough attention to my compass and hit the trail far too south. when I didn't see the water linear feature right away I still plunged into the forest anyway and relocated off a boulder that had a control on it
7- was just very very slow and unsure of myself crossing the water and actually walked during a lot of the green to make sure I didn't screw up.
8- should have realized I could run fast since I would hit the large reentrant if I was off but jogged slowly and was a tad bit too high
13- was right on track, but let a control at a feature I knew wasn't mine distract me momentarily

orienteering race (sprint) 18:56 [3]
shoes: Falcon O shoes

can't locate my map or splits but I remember making a large mistake for a sprint race on control 3. I just ran right by it to the next road and had to figure out what I did then go back to it. Otherwise just really slow. I had to admit I didn't try to run especially fast and at the finish line it felt like it had been a warm-up. I guess I tend to put in less effort for sprints since I like them the least of the three distances and am not that fast of a runner. I'll have to work on that.

run (road) 48:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8

forgot to stop the watch when I finished but I think it had been 48 minutes and change.

felt great! running faster and with less effort than any other run recently.

first I planned to go for a bike ride. actually got on my biking shoes and started riding down the hill from my apartment. at the bottom of the first hill turned around and biked for safety! it was so cold! the wind got the better of me. so then decided to go to the gym. but once i arrived on campus decided all i really wanted to do was run. so i did.

was sorely underdressed though so the second half of my run first my diaphragm and stomach started to hurt and then everything started to cramp up from the cold, especially my calf muscles. note to self: tank tops are a bad idea when you combine running after dark with winter weather. made sure I quickly got to a warm shower afterward, but didn't stretch since it was so cold and i just hopped into my car.

run (trail) 33:18 [3]
shoes: Inov8

very slow, easy run on trails near the pond where I ran the Adventure race last year. Everything seemed smaller and shorter this time...

Still feeling sick but Jordan convinced me a run wouldn't hurt me so out I went. So far glad I did.

note: a muscle on either side of my butt, near the back of my hips hurt while running. That muscle(s) kind of hurt while even walking around yesterday, that was the first sign of anything. Maybe because I didn't stretch after my road run? Well this is the same place where I got tendinitis in high school, twice. So must be careful! Not sure what to do or how careful to be though. Stretched today and took some motrin.
