Orienteering 57:58 [3] 5.8 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: orienteering shoes

I got lucky on this one and slipped under 10 mins/k by 2 seconds :-).

Day 2 at intercollegiates (Long).

Messier than yesterday. My mind was wandering around on some of the longer legs, and my attention felt more divided than on yesterday's run. This is something I need to work on.

Two significant mistakes:

Control 4 (stopped too early, lost time hesitating and generally bumbling around).

Control 10 (long control, chose a trail route around, unsure if it was optimal but maybe decent, would've been fun to compare splits with the other routes if I'd not messed it up so badly. I ran decently around on the right-hand trail route and then proceeded to run right past the control in the circle. Yikes. Very bad micronavigation; I should have slowed down and gone into the circle slowly.

Note

The A-meet was a great time :-). I miss all of you guys.

Orienteering 36:00 [4] 3.9 km (9:14 / km)

Intercollegiates Day 1.

Middle! (my favorite race)

It was a little hectic at the start. Drew and I had the same start time, and we had to sprint to make it there by the time we were supposed to be in the second call-up line.

And then all the old control descriptions that I have the habit of leaving in my control description holder exploded and scattered everywhere at the last start line.

But I was really happy with the race. Maybe it has something to do with the middle distance lots-of-controls-close-together set-up, but I felt really focused, like nothing else mattered for as long as I was running.

It was wonderful to see everyone again, and it was fun to cheer for Mallory, Kate, & Amelia at their first A-meet.

Soccer 20:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks Green

A game of waterbottle soccer with Tori, Dylan, Hunter, Calvin, & John. It was intense!

Playing with two waterbottles was fun, since people don't end up dribbling in circles around the bottle as often.

Orienteering 16:57 [4] 2.47 km (6:52 / km) +75m 5:57 / km
shoes: Brooks Green

Sprint relay. It was very physical, and I especially felt the hills. I need to work on those before JWOC.

It was really fun. I like the pressure/chaos of mass starts :). It pushed me to go faster and it was a fairly clean run.

I got stuck in a pit at one control--it was very deep and the walls were eroded and I wasn't wearing spikes. So I tried to pull myself up on roots, but they slipped--because they were actually just sticks--and so I had to grab a thornbush instead. It worked, but it hurt and I got some splinters.

I also lost a few seconds at control 170; after trying to memorize the next few control numbers, I had the idea that it should be 114 or 115, while really those were the following two. That was weird. I actually stopped at the control while everyone else punched it and ran on.

Run 20:24 [3] 2.28 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

I didn't wait for the Garmin to finish locating satellites, but it started recording distance about 2-3 minutes into the run so the distance should be reasonable.

Went for a run with Mallory & Kate around campus and then off past Gimghoul (although we didn't actually go to Gimghoul).

Run 6:17 [4] 1.0 mi (6:17 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

We walked to the track then, and we each did whatever we wanted to for a mile.

I decided to run it hard, but not hard enough that I felt like I was dying (i.e. not like a track meet ;-)).

It was nice to get in some speedwork.

football 20:00 [0]
shoes: Brooks Green

This game is very slow. I don't really like it.

Note

Did some mapwork with Mallory & Amelia, mostly focusing on starting--finding the triangle as quickly as possible after turning over the map, orienting the map, and then forming a plan quickly.

I'm so excited for intercollegiates! Catherine'll be here tomorrow.
