Pere Marquette Triail run. First time since 2003. Wave 13... Rocky start but super fun! Blasting down the hills is so totally worth the painful climbs! Wasn't sure I was even going to run until just a few minutes before start time.

Didn't put on spikes until last minute and then had to rush. Some problem with left shoe. Maybe the Active Ankle didn't go in the shoe properly. Ok to walk on but running hurt like hell. And the shoe started to come loose. Stopped just at the base of the first climbl, took shoe off and, reset the AA and put it back on. Seemd like it took a long time. Was passed by 3(?) waves.... bummer. Pushed up first climb passing butt loads of people.

Turned on the speed on the first big descent. The OROCs stuck to the mucky trail like glue. Blew by bunches of peeps. Then the same shoe came untied. WTF. Must have mis-tied the special knot, cuz it never comes undone. Ran until i was afraid of losing the lace out of the top eyelet then stopped to retie... another bummer. but only about a 20 second bummer. still on the downhill so re-passed the group that caught me again.

Passed more on the 2nd up and down then the crowds thinned a little. Noticed the wave numbers around me were in the 5's, 6's, and 7's. Thru the flat section i thought i was going pretty good, but was surprised my pace was 9:20ish.

3rd hill, still passing people. But then ran into a crowd on the 3rd downhill. Impossible to pass once you get to the steps.... Going slow downhill takes more energy. Kinda burned my quads a bit. was able to pass coming down to the parking lot though.

4th climb. Only a handfull in front of me. took it easy the first half then felt pretty good so pushed and got by the last couple of guys just before the start of the downhill. Ran hard down to the final flat stretch but one of the
guys i passed got me about 150m from the finish...

149th overall of 563.
15 of 55 in age group.

Gotta remember to take fuel belt next time. No point wasting time at the water stations when you could be drinking on the slow climbs.

10 hours of sleep! Wish i could do that more often.

Went out to Shirley Quad with Rick, Emily, and Dave W. to collect controls. I did the western loop after dropping people at various locations.

Beautiful but warm day. about 70F. Legs felt tired on first climb but quit complaining after a bit. Tried to keep a steady, albeit slow, pace in the woods. Felt like i was reading the map/terrain really well. Left compass in pocket. Used it twice to confirm location where parallel errors would have been really ugly. Pretty much red-lined it.

Subtracted 15 minutes for stoppage time.

Ankle/foot felt good.
