SSR with Katie Mac.
Bit of a fail strategy wise, I took Bobs comments to literally and assumed the 2nd map CPs would be in a totally different area which led us to 1) just cleaning out the first map and 2) never being on the lookout for Map 2 CPs/considering existing tracks heading off in 'unusual' directions.
Probably should have thought about it more before the race, if I was setting it and going to the trouble of doing 2 maps, why would I then make the best option to ignore the 2nd map!
Anyway, strategy schmategy, aint nobody got time for that before a race, so after a few minutes of looking at the course we decided to clear it out starting with the steeper NE area and slowly work around below the escarpment.
Biggest time lost for us was due to a lot of equipment malfunctions - at one point I lost my snowshoe in deep snow 3 times in about 100m. I've always been nervous to have the binding too tight after giving myself an achilles injury after my first SSR, but I think I was being a bit too much of a weenie - I think between the 2 of us we lost around 10 minutes effectively tying our shoelaces.
Apart from that, it was a pretty smooth race. Lost some time late in the race on the CP in that block of pine trees in the NE corner, but if that didn't happen we may not have come across friends who led us into two Map 2 50 pointers late in the race as we were about to head back.
Very tight finish, the soft snow in those fields just south of the finish was painfully slow. Also losing both snowshoes in the run to the finish made it a bit of a nail biter - but we just snuck in :) Fun times.
