Snowshoe Raid 2013 - Unconquerable Badness with Katie Mac.
Fun times on the first map - planned a route to take advantage of trails as much as possible as Kate is much stronger on trail than off. It was a little longer than ideal, but best for us.
Started to feel something was up when the hills were struggle even after 20 mins, but figured once we got on to the flatness of Map 2 it would be OK. I planned an ambitious route, collecting 201 and 208, then swinging back and going down the hill to 160 and finishing through the village (which meant we wouldn't have to worry about matrix tactics at the end). But on the way to #201, my body totally quit on me. Redlining at 6:30 mins/k on flat pavement. Total frustrating collapse.
So I make the decision at #208 to just go straight to the finish, passing by the matrix.
As we jog along the road, I realise we've now got a comfortable cushion to get back, so I mention to Kate, if she feels confident - go and grab a matrix CP or 2 and I'll meet her at the Check-In. The decision takes about 2 seconds, and Kate is gone. You know that scene in every Roadrunner cartoon, where he jumps up and down and is suddenly gone in a puff of smoke. It was like that. Seeing Kate tear past teams in front of us was awesome, but also an eye opener on how slow I was going. By the time I get to the check in, you can already see her heading back up the hill from C! Easy 10 mins to get to the finish (not before GHO SLO sledge us on the way down) and in with 3 mins to spare.

Very surprised to be in 4th overall at the end. In effect, we only lost 1 place (120 extra points) due to my failing body, were still collecting points the whole race and didn't get back late - maybe the top end was a little thinner this year than previous.

Funnily enough, after my laundry list of excuses posted on Friday, it was the stupid flu I've had since Christmas that brought me down (I'm assuming, still coughing up gunk every now and then). The race actually cleared up most of the soreness from Quebec!

SSR sandbagging Post snowboarding injury roundup

Numerous sore inner thigh muscles/tendons(?) leading up from both knees
Sore achilles tendons on right foot
Mild concussion
Raging left butt pain from repeated heavy falls on hard ice
Aggravated MCL injury

Disappointed Tiny had to pull out, our teams would now be about even.

Day 3. Went awesome today, less zig zagging slowly across the slope, unclipping in the flat sections since I run out of momentum & far fewer falls.
Unfortunately though saved the best fall for last, took a pretty hard hit to the head right towards the end of the last run. Back home tomorrow - great couple of days.

Le Massif Day 2
Getting better, turning is easy and not braking the whole way down - but my, I hurt. This may not have been wise as a taper for SSR.

First day of snowboarding ever at Le Massif. Can't count it as training, but a lot of fun.
Lots of falling, but got a lot better during the day. Many thanks to menzies and Dr. PBV for providing excellent instruction after discovering there were no noob lessons today.
