Event: Swiss O Week

3 PM

Orienteering race 27:11 [5] 3.8 km (7:09 / km) +130m 6:07 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

SOW Prologue. Mass start sprint with mental forking. The flags on early controls weren't visible - just 20 guys in a cluster like flies on sh!t.
Must have been doing something right cause I never took the wrong forking. Bit sloppy on the final loop and lost a few places.
Super fun race, though was knackered by the end - was a k longer than advertised!

Run with Carol for our fairly awesomely located hostel somewhere near where SOW starts.
Up, up, up for about 1.5km, with a requisite raspberry stop. Along a flat 4WD road for a while till we spotted an awesome looking trail heading off downhill.
We were a bit hesitant to follow it since we didn't want to be spat out 100s of metres below our village. Turns out perfectly as we ended up on another road leading back to the village.

As usual, Switzerland does not disappoint.

The view across the valley. The camera is crappy BTW.

The secret trail. Just as we started running it, Carol mentioned one of her WOC rules - 'don't do anything that'll get you injured in the weeks leading up'. The trail was super gnarly and slippery!

Where the trail spat us out. No big deal.

Orienteering 37:41 intensity: (9 @1) + (1:04 @2) + (9:35 @3) + (26:26 @4) + (27 @5) 3.8 km (9:55 / km)

Middle Distance course on a map near War Eagle - Copper something.
Pine forest was sprinkled with boulders and a few bigger cliffs, reminded me of those nice granite maps near Canberra used for a mid 90's Easter - before they got obliterated by the bushfires.
Tried to keep good flow and run aggressively through the forest when I could. Simplifying and picking off strong attackpoints well - lots of fun. Thanks Brent.

Orienteering 50:03 intensity: (30 @0) + (6:33 @1) + (20:16 @2) + (19:30 @3) + (3:14 @4) 3.94 km (12:42 / km)

Too much orienteering is never enough.
Training out on War Eagle. Was pretty stoked to get out on this area as I've heard of it's reputation.
Control picking followed by precise compass work (real fog) followed by a line course.
Control picking went very well, compass was good with 2 blowouts (and some sweet patches of forest). The line course was super tough, never felt confident and was very stop/start and went off line regularly - though at least I realised it quickly and was able to get back on.

Orienteering 37:58 intensity: (2:41 @1) + (10:28 @2) + (18:00 @3) + (6:49 @4) 3.13 km (12:08 / km)
ahr:133 max:162 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

Second session on War Eagle.
Super complex course with lots of short legs/changes of direction and forks. A potato course according to Carol (I don't understand what she means either).
I started last with the goal of the session to not be distracted by others (after yesterdays debacle). Was still occasionally affected, but turns out it's easy to do when you're aware of it.
A few map changes and epic cliffs made the going a bit tougher. Found using only the big contour and rock features was the way to go.

Orienteering warm up/down 1:20:00 [1] 8.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Total warm ups for the week (give or take)
Warm up maps - love them.
11 AM

Orienteering race 53:41 [4] 4.5 km (11:56 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Canadian Middle Champs
The much hyped new Lewes Lake map. I was nervous to begin with, but felt a little better after getting out on the warm up map, then talking to Graeme which confirmed my tactic - to stay high as much as possible.
The first half up to the spectator control was pretty much perfect. Stayed to plan, the ridge lines were perfect linear feature to get from one control to the other.I
was picking off all the clearings, green patches and knolls perfectly and I felt like I was flowing well and reading ahead. It was a pretty conservative technique and I never got close to winning a split, but for my current technical form I think it was the best way to go.
Then I blew it. Straight after the spectator run through I drop 3 minutes on the next control. I was right on line, but the feature was higher up in the depression than I expected and I run the length of the big depression checking every 'cup' depression for the flag.
Get to the circle eventually to see Eric running though. We split, but meet up again at #12. He exits the same way I want to go and is flying, so, I sit behind him and try to keep up. Of course, I loose contact - so I stop, attempt to relocate and drop into the depression I think is the right one.
12 or so minutes later, I punch 13. A GPS would be useful here.
Fairly unmotivated, I jog the last few controls.
Before the carnival, I kind of expected a result like this for this race, but I didn't expect it to happen in this fashion (small mistake leading to a larger one, distracted by another competitor).
A little frustrating. I knew a placing was unlikely today, but a clean race and the feeling of conquering the terrain would have been satisfying.
