I haven't run of Bothwell since Easter 99 and it's aged terribly. A fitting warning for this one should be 'Any similarities to the terrain is purely coincidental'. This one needs a detailed write up.
1 & 2 were on the northern section which has been totally cleared. Only thing you can rely on is compass and the major tracks, nothing else fits - I think even the rocks have moved. It was weird, you were just running along having no idea where you were until you hit a linear feature. Now I know what its like to be Nicko.
2-6 were shortish legs in the forest. This is the Bothwell I remember (probably cause the course was so similar to my Day 2 one!), waist high bracken hiding knee high fallen tree. Some new forestry tracks helped a little. Had an issue at 4 cause I though I couldn't see the rock for the bracken, turns out it was such slow going I was only half way there.
7. The bitch. I originally planned to use the new logging tracks to do the long was round (like Ryan did, who had the fastest split), but saw an unmapped branch leading off the seemed like it would follow the contour into the control. It actuallt swung around and began to lead me back to where I began so I had to bite the bullet and follow the contour into the control. 500m and about 10 minutes later I make it to the control.
The rest wasn't so bad, a big detour to dodge a massive gully (that Pacque ran through - dumbass) and a few short legs to the finish.
Oh yeah, except I ran to the last control on the Easy course thinking it was the finish and began to walk back to the assembly area before I noticed the big arse Finish banner.
Having said all that, I didn't mind it too much - more cause I knew everyone else was going through the pain as well. It was pretty fun at the end comparing who had the worst luck with the terrain. I prabably won't be back though.
Total distance 12.25km, 500m climb.
