Running race (Cardiff 5k TT) 18:55 [5] 5.0 km (3:47 / km)
ahr:181 max:189

Well, since I was up at 6:30 I figured I'd do the time trial up at Blackweir. Thought I'd be able to do a decent time since I'd warmed up properly and hadn't rolled out of bed half an hour before the start, but this is about the same time I did last December.
Started off well, 3:35 for the first km and felt really good and fresh - then it just degenerated after a mile and it was all I could do to hang on (3:44, 3:50, 3:55, 3:46). I guess I've been focussing more on terrain and less pure speed over the last couple of months, but I can't fathom how I was able to comfortably do just over 10 for 3k on the track before Easter.

Running warm up/down 47:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:53 / km)
ahr:137 max:156

Warm up from Grangetown through Bute Park to the start and back. Stides and Poodle endorsed dynamic stretchy time. Beaut day, warm, clear and slight breeze. Perfect.

Running 42:00 [3] 8.5 km (4:56 / km) +20m 4:53 / km
ahr:156 max:166

So my plan for jet lag removal is to go for a run when I feel like having a nap. Got the urge at 5 (2am), so headed out and did one of my old easy loops up and back along the Taff.
I forgot how nice summer was here, everything was so green and bright. People were everywhere in the parks, I'd say I passed more people in this run than all the runs I did in four months combined in Cardiff!
The run itself wasn't so great, a real struggle from start to finish with a pretty high HR for most of it.

Running 40:00 [3] 6.7 km (5:58 / km) +280m 4:56 / km
ahr:135 max:158 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Belbins Loop. Was just gonna go up to the foot of the steep bit and back, but as I got close to the turn around point I passed a guy taking a piss on the track and didn't want to run back past him so did the full loop.
Started to get very dark in the last 15 mins and had to leg it - didn't want to do the downhill in the dark, didn't to do a ankle just before Tour de Shoe begins.
Not looking forward to the next 48 hours.

Orienteering race 1:05:41 [5] 8.5 km (7:44 / km)
ahr:177 max:184 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

TOS event at Pittwater.
Not too bad a run if I do say so myself. A bit wobbly early, but nothing went too wrong. Generally took the gay track option where I could on the legs in the low vis vague dunes from 6 - 12, but never had any problems - there was talk of bingo controls for some of them (7 especially).
Lost close to a minute on #18 where I lost concentration and went back into the dunes too early (a typical Pittwater leg, run out to the edge of the detail and run back in from an obvious feature). Probably 30 secs on 25, tired and went too far to the left on an easy leg.
Finally on the last control I pretty happy with myself for only having minor losses and then drop 3 minutes. I can put some blame on the map here, the control was meant to be in a gully right on the edge of a yellow/white transition - I should realise now that most of the vegetation changes on Pittwater a more guidelines than actual rules and should have looked a bit more at the contours, but was just fixated on the vegetation change. Luckily Kari came in and found it for me or I'd probably still be running back and forth along the edge of the pines.
Took out the win (just, Oscar was 30 seconds behind - and no Ryan to ruin it for me), but well clear of everyone else. I think that may actually be my first win for Course 1!
I had to post a decent time after a MP and DNF on the last 2!
The course was pretty good, though I would have preferred to go further east into the yellow super hard stuff instead of the second loop through the low vis area again, but since I've never done a course with more than a couple of token controls in the green it was good for a change.

Running 1:04:00 [3] 11.0 km (5:49 / km) +460m 4:49 / km
ahr:151 max:172 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

No chance in heck I was going to get up early enough to drive out to Bagdad for cross country, the mountain was my target for today.
Got out there at 3, I was a bit worried about the light fading as the cloud had come over, but decided to do Chicken Payback, I think it my new favourite mountain loop.
Felt quite good, the effects of a pretty easy week I'd say. The last vestiges of the cold have almost gone, still coughing up bit of gunk here and there.
Realise when I got back, all my local loops have all the climb in the first half - I should really mix it up so I'm working a bit harder at the end of a run every now and then instead of cruising for 20 mins downhill.

Note
(rest day)

Last day at work for a while, so of course I wasted the arvo faffing around sorting out files and projects and other important stuff - like making use of the photocopier while I have it and stealing supplies.
No time to run. Arse is sore again anyway - a little concerning.

Running 55:00 [3] 9.5 km (5:47 / km) +200m 5:14 / km
ahr:139 max:168 shoes: Kayanos

A lonely old Tour tonight with just myself and Lukey making an effort (most excuses were legitimate though). Shame really, all the other ingredients were there for a cracker run. Lukas set an interesting course through New Town, Derwent Park and Goodwood with lots of alleys and twisting streets.
Real highlight was running though 'New Town Hospital' (as google maps calls it), which confirms my suspicions of being a quality sprint area - quite large too, if you include Ogilvie it's about 2 square km.
Could have supplied the cops with a address for a good drug bust - you could smell the place from aaaaages away! Any guesses which suburb we was in then?
Also funny was as soon as we crossed the latte line/flannel curtain we suddenly pass a house with a massive domestic going on inside!

Orienteering 35:00 [2] 3.0 km (11:40 / km) +150m 9:20 / km
ahr:130 max:163 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Night training at Ridgeway. Pretty hard this week, had a couple of issues in the circle - the only way to fix that is to go out and in again, relocation ain't gonna happen in the dark.
I really dig this night running, especially on such a clear night. Happy I nabbed a night leg at Jukola!

Orienteering 33:00 [2] 3.3 km (10:00 / km) +150m 8:09 / km
ahr:135 max:162 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Putting out tapes. Cracker time of day, sun had just set and the mountain and foothills had gone all shades of blue and misty. Very cool.

Got the rejection notice for the NY marathon today. Looks like I'll have to find some time to run an automatic qualifying time for next years race (which fits better anyway since I should be on that continent).
83:00 for a HM seems doable - according to the V02 max data I can do under 80, but I don't trust the extrapolation. Will take any suggestions for a flat, fast course.

Note

Have been taking it easy, the chest thing just won't quit and I'm quite concerned about it elevating to the dreaded man flu. Will do something tomorrow.

Orienteering race (ACT NOL Long) 30:00 [4] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Fail.
I really wanted to have a good crack at this, but it wasn't meant to be. Had started walking the hills on the way to the first control and when I somehow did this:
Long #1
and then did something similar at #3. I decided to pull the pin here as I could see the course blowing out to 2.5+ hours if I'd already made 5 minutes of errors in the first 4 controls.
That first control was an odd one, as I was going back up the hill to it I saw Sebba doing exactly the same thing. The rock must have been well camouflaged somehow when coming from the east - you can even see how I slowed down in the circle!

Orienteering race (Bruce CIT Sprint) 18:20 [5] 3.3 km (5:33 / km)
ahr:180 max:187 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Not my greatest sprint; I could feel I wasn't in top gear - a struggle cause the chesty thing has been hanging on. Needed to be flawless as it was such an easy area, so I compound my slowness by wasting 25 secs switching off and running past 8 and 20 secs due to the misplaced control - I didn't pick up that it was in the wrong spot, but got confused by the following leg. 24th/60 is about what I deserved, 3 mins down on Simon.

Can't say I enjoyed it much. Though it wasn't a great area, there was no attempt made to set any sort of challenging course there. Reusing controls is OK if done well, but reusing an exact same leg? Why? It wasn't even a good leg! Maybe some more sharp directional change in the forest, some more route choice around the buildings, a sneaky leg where people have to spot the gap between the buildings near #1.

Orienteering race (Middle Wild Deer Sands) 38:50 [5] 6.2 km (6:16 / km) +155m 5:34 / km
ahr:174 max:186 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Not that there is much to compare to, but this was my best middle race yet. Much more enjoyable than the morning, I think not being at 100% helped as being a bit slower helped me stay fairly clean amongst the mining detail.
I reckon about 2 mins of errors, not seeing the flag at 3, poor exit direction and compass on both 4 and 5 (drifted a long way right on 5) and hesitation on the way to 6 for no good reason, it just didn't feel right - but I was doing exactly what I should have.
Knew I had to give it everything I had from 12 onwards as it was easy and fast and I'm pretty pleased that my splits compare well to those above me -I suspect the mornings sprint had taken it's toll by that point and everyone was feeling the pinch. Jumping the fence to the final control was definitely the way to go!
Again, I think the area (which was pretty cool) deserved a better course than we got, but I still enjoyed it. 15th/42 was more like it (still a staggering 9 mins off Jules), but still frustratingly behind a large number of people doing 35-37.

Running 1:08:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:48 / km) +260m 6:01 / km
ahr:140 max:173 shoes: Kayanos

Tour starting in North Hobart, set my first timer Brea.
Really enjoyed the run tonight, much banter was had by all - the allegations of cheating, disqualification and incorrectly marked routes were flying thick and fast throughout the run, so much so I was thinking we'd need a tribunal!
Post run spring rolls didn't quite live up to the hype, but were still pretty good!
Feeling a little bit better again tonight, was able to push a bit more - felt I could run strongly on the flat and downhills but pretty listless as soon as I had to go uphill.

Orienteering 32:00 [2] 3.0 km (10:40 / km) +120m 8:53 / km
ahr:122 max:149 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Night training (or I should call it Jukola training now I have a team sorted!) at Knocklofty. Much better area for it than Waverly - nice white forest and obvious definite features. No real troubles, except for one where I did a 90 down a hill and then later hitting a track and thinking it was a different one and ending up somewhere I didn't expect. Both compass mistakes.
There were quite a few controls in areas I've never visited, it's quite a good sprint/middle area. Should be used for more than just School events.
Still sickly, sitting in my chest now. Fell OK, but like last night lacking in energy. Hopefully it clears up by the weekend, I'm perversely looking forward to tackling Sundays monster and would like to be at full strength for it.

Orienteering 30:00 [2] 2.9 km (10:21 / km) +80m 9:05 / km
ahr:115 max:144

Hanging out the TP in the daylight. Much easier than the last time.
Cause was too easy the other week, did it in reverse - made a big difference.

Running intervals 50:00 [3] 9.5 km (5:16 / km)
ahr:144 max:182 shoes: Kayanos

Still a bit clogged up, but feeling better today so decided to give the track a crack to see how it went.
We could either do 4 or 6x1k. Just decided to do as many as possible till I dropped off the pace. Got through the 1st two OK, but had no energy during the 3rd and dropped out after 200m. Jogged round and did a 3rd one as everyone came through doing their 4th and then kept jogging after that. Did the required 4x150m strides at the end and felt pretty good for them.
Splits for the ks were 3:10, 3:20, 3:27. I accidently hit stop instead of lap on the first one so it's just a guess ;)
Feel much better now; coughed out enough gunk to feed a small African nation afterwards.

Running 20:00 [1] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
ahr:122 max:147 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

The big quandary yesterday was whether I should do a long run on Pittwater or the Mountain. Waking up with clogged sinuses and a sore throat changed that to should I run or not.
It was such a nice day I couldn't not go out, so settled for a loop or 2 of Fiddlers on the Domain so I could get back to the car easily if it all went pear shaped.
It did, but not as expected. I've been feeling a slight twinge in my arse for a month or 2 now at the start of a run, but today it became a full fledged sharp stabbing pinched nerve type pain. Stopped, stretched, jogged slowly, but it kept coming back - but there was no logic to it, sometimes on downhill, sometimes uphill, sometimes it would go away with a heel strike, then it came back. Sat down and contemplated life for about 5 mins and ran back.
Only when I got back I realised that after the sit down it had gone away?!
Was still stuffed up and had no energy anyway, so it was for the best. Think it's time for a rest and easier week anyway.

Orienteering 30:00 [2] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)
ahr:129 max:153 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Went down to Calverts Beach, reran an old course.
Have wanted to check out the area as it's been about 4 or 5 years since I last ran there and wanted to see how it's aged. As expected, all the dark green boobyalla has grown a lot.
I'm not sure if the area is unusable, but a remap would be necessary for any event to be held there. If there are corridors to get between the clumps of green a very tricky course could be set there. It probably would hurt to map at a larger scale, the dunes are fairly simplified at 1:10000 (similar to the pre-1999 Pittwater map was) and misses out on some subtle detail in places.
More interestingly, had a quick look on the other side of Goats Bluff and there's more dunes there too - only about 250m wide from the beach, but goes on for about 3ks, and some of it is nice pine forest. Might have to have a look in greater detail soon.

Running 32:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:20 / km) +30m 5:12 / km
ahr:137 max:152 shoes: Kayanos

Came down with an acute case of spreadsheet hypnosis at about 3 this arvo and realised I'd done as much work as my brain would allow for the week, so left early and did a quick beaches jaunt.
Tide was high so was constantly forced into the soft sand on Bellerive Beach, which I didn't sign on for, so when I came back went along the track which runs along the top of the dunes - I didn't think you were allowed in the dunes, but they're only fenced off near Bellerive Oval. Might make that track a permanent fixture, much more interesting than the beach.

Running 53:00 [3] 9.4 km (5:38 / km) +250m 4:59 / km
ahr:144 max:179 shoes: Kayanos

Didn't think I'd make it to Tour tonight - work is crap.
Everyone but the ladies was soft tonight, so I had to do a lot of the course by myself - which made me run faster as I was constantly trying to catch up to the ladies, which is a good thing.

Have started reading 'Feet in the Clouds'. Had planned on waiting till the upcoming trip, but couldn't wait. Only a handful of pages in, but I'm hooked - a plethora of htfu quotes.

Running 1:15:00 [2] 10.5 km (7:09 / km) +400m 6:00 / km
ahr:123 max:155 shoes: Kayanos

Took up Ilkas offer to do the 'nearly full moon' Wednesday night group run. Hannys Mum was there and a couple other guys whose name I forget - I think all med types with the conversation.
Awesome run, almost all on trail and a lot I've never been on before. From Cascade Hotel, up the spur behind the brewery and down to Old Farm Rd. Then up 'The Luge' track (I think), back on to Huon Rd and down S27.
Really fun in the dark, the lights in the city looked speccy on the way down.
Legs were pretty shattered after yesterday so happy for the easy pace!

Running intervals 1:00:00 [5] 12.0 km (5:00 / km)
ahr:152 max:188 shoes: Kayanos

Finally got round to doing a track session with the group that Ilka (and it turns out Julia and Ian) runs with.
5 x 1.2k with 400m recovery then 5 x 120m
Brutal. 1st & 2nd felt good - even a little easy, took a toilet break on the recovery lap and from then on it was a blur of pain.
Splits: 4:06, 4:08, 4:12, 4:13, 4:11.
Really good doing these again in a group with people around the same speed to push me.

Running 32:00 [2] 6.2 km (5:10 / km) +130m 4:40 / km
ahr:142 max:178 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Easy cruise around the Montagu Bay foreshore and back around Rosny Hill. Legs stiff and very high HR to begin with, but loosened up nicely after 15 or so mins.

Had no work to do today, so played around with yesterdays splits a fair bit. Fairly even spread of split winners and split losers - some interesting other stats in there. Ask me about them later...

Orienteering race 1:16:00 [5] 10.0 km (7:36 / km) +250m 6:45 / km
ahr:168 max:177 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

TOS event at Stags Head. Probably the best course I've done there (but don't tell Ryan that).
Started off well, feeling 100% better than yesterday. Was going to try and push a little harder than usual to force myself out of my comfort zone - though this wasn't the best area to do that with all the undergrowth and branchy stuff. Maybe try at Pittwater later in the month.

3.5 mins on #4, #9 and #23; spiked the feature but didn't see the control (also wasted time on #9 zigzagging/compass laziness).
4 mins on #10 and #17 due to unmapped features pulling me offline.
A few minor unnecessary hesitations at #6, #14 & #18 - I'm really trying to stamp this crap out.
Also lost an embarrassing 40 secs on the pivot control the 2nd time through, though granted there were many more log piles in the area than mapped.
On the final section, going to #28 felt very odd - lots of unmapped log piles, the control seemes to take forever to get to and was a long way off my bearing.
Again was sure everyone would obliterate me, so was surprised when Ryan told me I was leading by a decent amountt. Even more surprised when I looked at the map and noticed #27 which I hadn't visited during the race. That's why it felt so odd going to #28.
That's what we call a MP.
I finally have the chance to win a TOS event and screw it up! Bugger.

Running race 23:34 [5] 6.0 km (3:56 / km) +20m 3:52 / km
ahr:174 max:186 shoes: Kayanos

Handicapped cross country (all grass) at Howrah. Had roughly the handicap I'd expect, but felt like arse and ran like arse - so was constantly being passed by people who actually warm up and prepare for races. Not one of my better days.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: Kayanos

5 mins warm up, HR was high and knew it was going to be a struggle. Much more enjoyable warm down with Ilka and Julia.

Spent most of yesterday evening reading up on the best way to get from Helsinki to Bodo over 3 weeks. Not sure what to do about Jukola as I haven't bothered doing anything about making or finding a team - if it wasn't in the direction I wanted to head (Savolinna) I'd consider ditching it, especially as I discovered the Midnight Sun marathon in Tromso the following weekend. If these are the toughest decisions I have to make in my life at the moment, I can't really complain!
