Running 45:30 [3] 8.2 km (5:33 / km) +300m 4:41 / km
ahr:141 max:169 shoes: White Asics

Spent the weekend in Edinburgh with the folks. They decided to visit museums and stuff in the arvo so I got a leave pass and was able to go explore Holyrood Park.
If this run has proven anything, its that London has removed any sort of hill ability I had. I mean, the place was steep, like running at walking pace steep in places, but still - massive strugglefest.
Absolute cracker day, I think mid 20s and not a cloud in the sky. Really rate Edinburgh, considering moving there next year.

Running tempo 1:02:00 [4] 14.0 km (4:26 / km)
ahr:153 max:176

Wasn't going to make it to the Windmilers run due to taking 3 hours to get home and not being keen to race back through the traffic on my bike in the rain, so did a tempo run I did a couple of months ago alternating 5 and 4 min/ks for each k.
Felt good for most of it, had to really force myself to slow down for the first couple of slow ones. Didn't really plan the run well as it went past the outside of Fulham Stadium just as some big match was starting (google reveals it was Ireland v Columbia!) and the entire street was packed out. Felt a right git amongst all the football louts in my kit.

Running race (London Fiddlers) 17:53 [5] 4.8 km (3:44 / km)
ahr:170 max:185 shoes: Saucony Triumphs

2nd of the monthly 3 mile handicap. Kind of frustrating as it's a 2 lap course, you're constantly zig zagging through slower runners. But pushed as hard as I could, legs were feeling heavy after the last couple of days - I think I can do faster than that. Still took over a minute off my last time.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

All the usual warm up stuff. Includes riding to and from the windmill. Didn't stretch afterwards as had an appointment with a pint and a chunk of beef wrapped in bacon.

Running 33:00 [3] 7.0 km (4:43 / km)
ahr:141 max:165 shoes: Brooks Glycerin

Short run to break in some new shoes and get out in the wind and drizzle. Not many people out today, unsurprising considering the weather.
Had a very big muppet moment coming off Hammersmith bridge. Did a 180 to get down onto the towpath, my feet went right out from under me on the slippy footpath and I went flat on my arse/back right in front of the traffic/people sitting outside a pub. Gold.
The right calf has been feeling a bit sore of late - not painful, it's just an annoying sensation... just something to watch I guess.

Running 1:51:00 [3] 23.5 km (4:43 / km) +150m 4:35 / km
ahr:144 max:171 shoes: Saucony Triumphs

Really good long run. Hadn't planned on going this far, but after the first 10 mins I was feeling really good so decided to turn it into a longer one. Just kept it steady and pushed on the hills (all 3 of them).
Got caught very short about a km from the exit of Richmond Park (which thankfully, had unlocked toilets). Don't need to go into details, but my pace in this section could be described as impressive.
After this short break I had a little trouble regaining my rhythm through Wimbledon Common so had a go at something new and increased my pace through for the last 20 mins. It actually worked really well - usually by the end of these runs by knees start to get sore, but it felt really good at an increased speed.
I had planned on also doing some sections through the terrain on this run, but after one short section at the beginning, I forgot. Can't have it all!

Running 40:00 [3] 8.5 km (4:42 / km)
ahr:138 max:151 shoes: Saucony Triumphs

Quick run around the towpath straight after getting home - gotta make the most of the sun as it's predicted to disappear for the next week!
Chuck all my clothes in the wash to discover I had no shorts so had to inflict the Crafties on the general public, which I don't like to do in daylight - but it's OK, turns out Friday is lycra day.

Running tempo 1:03:00 [4] 13.2 km (4:46 / km) +135m 4:32 / km
ahr:148 max:178 shoes: Saucony Triumphs

'8 Mile' fartlek with the WW. Really good session, lots of 30, 45 and 60 second efforts and a few hills thrown in for good measure.

Cycling 42:00 [2] 15.5 km (22.1 kph)

To and from the Rugby club. New record getting home.

Running 45:45 [3] 9.5 km (4:49 / km)
ahr:143 max:157 shoes: Mizuno Trail Bargain

Usual towpath loop to Barnes Bridge and back through the common. Quite like running through Barnes Common, there's hardly anyone there and lots of tracks to get lost in.
Felt crap at the start, slow and high HR. As the run progressed felt better, faster and HR lowered - very odd. Still haven't caught up on sleep since Harvester, gonna have a lazy weekend I thinks.
More JJJ musings: I'm not sure how Chelsea Dagger made it onto JJJ's playlist last year, it seems like the kind of song SeaFM (or whatever your local commercial station that plays the Hot 5 at 5 and give out cold hard cash for identifying some song played in reverse) would flog to death - but damn if it isn't a catchy song to run to.

Running intervals 7:15 [5] 2.7 km (2:41 / km)
ahr:155 max:176 shoes: Saucony Triumphs

Track session, relays with groups of 3 - 3 x 400m x 2. Garmin was measuring the track as 450m and all the people in the know said it was long so I'm going with that.
Felt good, pushed fairly hard cause there were some new people in front of me to catch.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

Warm up/down to and from the grass track and recoveries.

Cycling 44:00 [3] 15.5 km (21.1 kph)

To and from Raynes Park. Have to remember to get some lights for the bike when riding home in the dark.

Orienteering race 1:05:06 [4] 6.9 km (9:26 / km) +200m 8:14 / km
ahr:157 max:173 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Harvested Relays.
4th leg of SLOW's course A #1 team. Got the wake up call from Seb at 3:20am - about an hour later than predicted so was a little concerned about the difficulty. Warm up consisted of 2 cans of red bull. Set off a 4:25am and thankfully the sky was just starting to lighten. Started off hesitantly but was fairly good through the first handful of controls, stuck to tracks for the most of it. Had a bad one at six, crossed a track and didnt realise and the sneaky map decided to put a parallell track just after that with an eaven sneakier track junction that I was using as an attack point with tracks leading off in identical directions. Luckily this was one of our gaffles and I found the split control in amongst some rocks (the only rocks on the map) so was able to relocate, otherwise I would have been stuffed!
OK for the next couple, not great, but it was still dark.
Nice long track leg back to the pre-spectator radio control. Ran down the hill, saw bunting, saw a flag, got there, no punch. I'd run right past the control to the start flag. Back up the hill and into the run-through.
Felt like a bit of a knob running though the spectator contorl with my head torch on, but it was just dark enough on the forest to turn it on.
Last loop was a bit hilly and I was starting to tire. Luckily it was getting lighter by the minute and I was able to go bush and only needed the light to see the map. It was interesting how I had to keep changing my technique as it got lighter - stuff was coming so quickly towards the end. A couple of times I would see a control and not expect it, but it was on the feature I had so checked and whaddaya know, it's mine!
Unfortunately our 1st leg runner mispunched so we didn't get a result, but it was a fun race anyway.

Orienteering race 28:37 [5] 4.61 km (6:12 / km) +170m 5:14 / km
ahr:175 max:185 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

JOK chasing sprint prologue.
28th out of 77. Probably one of my best races in a long time. Started off a little slow for the first 5, hesitant in the circle as most controls were small depressions that were impossible to see till you were right on them. Caught a group at #4 and had a pack to #5. Went right on the long leg to #6 and never saw them again. Bit of a mistake at #9, a control in flat ground coming off a stepp hill - I caught some people and assumed they were going to the same control - luckily there was a track 50m after the control that caught me and I was easily able to relocate thanks to a ditch. Just ran in the general direction for the last couple and located the control based on the tracks in the circle.
I originally thought I couldn't get much faster on this course, but looking in more detail, I exited about half the controls in the wrong direction and didn't know exactly where I was when going into the circle, which you really needed to when dealing with those pits and depressions. But still, I placed better and percentage wise closer to the leader than I have been recently.

Orienteering race 27:07 [5] 4.03 km (6:44 / km) +115m 5:53 / km
shoes: Inov8 Roclites

JOK chasing sprint final. 44th out of 75. 35th overall.
Chasing start based on the mornings race - had 4 lads within 5 seconds behind me! Very short leg through complex tracks to a small depression (natch) in some green right next to a track junction. None of us had really read out maps, none of the earlier starters had made a nice elephant train so everyone was everywhere. I spotted in and tried to sneak in but was spotted. After that I have no idea what was going on - it was bedlam, people were everywhere. Splits show I made up 4 places by the spectator control and was running with one other guy who was pushing me well.

Then I choked.

The final loop had a crossover, and the 25 minute pack that had about 15 people in it crossed us going to #13 while we were going to #10. Somehow I got pulled in their wake when I saw them punching #13. Realised it wasn't mine but had a panicky minute where I relocated before heading off to #10. Lost 9 places, was alone and defeated. Plodded along, made another mistake at #12 and was caught by the next pack who I ran with to the finish.

The worst part. If I'd sucked it up and kept racing, the pack I was originally with also stuffed up #12 and I could have caught them and had a massive battle through the last couple. Lesson of the day; no more sooking.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Inov8 Roclites

To the start of both races and back from the finish to the assembly area.

Cycling 1:10:00 [3] 15.0 km (12.9 kph)

From High Wycombe station to the sprint. From the spring back to High Wycombe. From High Wycombe to the Harvester camping area.
Long day!

Would have been enforced anyway due to an unexpected 12 hour day at work - keep those poundies coming in!

Running race 17:29 [5] 4.6 km (3:48 / km) +50m 3:36 / km
ahr:175 max:185

Joined a Windmiler team for a 4 x 3 Mile relay race in Richmond Park. Was feeling a bit sluggish after warming up, and never felt great, but pretty happy with the time considering I raced yesterday as well. Absolutely beaut course, nicely undulating, green grass and big old trees everywhere and all the haze makes a nice sunset.

Cycling 25:00 [3] 9.0 km (21.6 kph)

To Richmond Park and back

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Bit of a warm up beforehand. Legs felt uber heavy.

Orienteering race 42:05 [5] 10.1 km (4:10 / km)
ahr:178 max:185 shoes: White Asics

10k trail challenge at Bushy Park.
1st evening 10k mass start races with easy navigation. Nice night for it. Legs pretty heavy after the ride there, but came good about half way though (probably cause I started to slow down).
Was surprised to see so many people stick totally to tracks, the entire area was yellow and although the off-track was fairly lumpy, it was still faster to go straight when there were no convenient tracks as I was able to keep up with faster runners.
A few herds of deer kept things interesting - ran right though a group of them and they didn't care at all. Wasn't game to run though a group of them lying down on the way to the last control though.
Robbed myself of a couple of places as I started planning the next leg and crossed into an area of extensive nettles when you needed to keep going along a track and turn off about 100m later.
Still yet to identify nettles by sight, only by touch. Let's just say I'm trying to build immunity.

Cycling 1:15:00 [3] 25.0 km (20.0 kph)

To and from home to Bushy Park. Got a bit lost on the way there and had to fang it meaning I started tired again - starting to get used to it though.
Busy Park was pretty nice, like Richmond Park without the hills or the hordes. Fairly nice ride there as well with good bike lanes - may head there again.

Running 30:00 [2] 6.2 km (4:50 / km)
ahr:134 max:165 shoes: Mizuno Trail Bargain

Easy run to Hammersmith Bridge and back. I don't know why, but I always feel like a sack of shit when I do slow, easy runs - but usually feel really good when my HR's above about 155.
Did some core work yesterday and really felt it today. Planks are eeevil.

Running 1:04:00 [3] 13.2 km (4:51 / km)
ahr:145 max:162

What was meant to be a short little run after the day in Oxford eating lots of food and what not, but once I got out of a bit of early sluggishness, felt quite good so went for the newly dubbed 3 bridges run. Home, around the towpath to Barnes Bridge, over the bridge and back along the otherside passing Hammersmith bridge and back over Putney Bridge - Hence, 3 bridges.
Spring growth is really taking off - disturbingly so. Some places it looks like the grass and weeds have tripled in size to about chest height!
Number of bugs that flew into my mouth = 2.
Hottest 100 musing: I like the Missy Higgins song 'Peachy'. Why? She's not so screachy that her voice grates and makes me want to push her off a cliff. Nice bouncy rhythm to run too as well.

Cycling 1:30:00 [3] 30.0 km (20.0 kph)

Rose a lot of places. Out to Borough Markets, then out to Notting Hill Markets, then back home. Another day with the parents being a tourist.
Like Borough markets the best - lots of food. Lots and lots of food.

Running intervals 30:00 [5] 5.5 km (5:27 / km) +240m 4:29 / km
ahr:175 max:190 shoes: White Asics

Hills with the running club. 2x6x Bloomfield Hill. It's a nasty little pinch which gives way to a gradual climb for the final 40m - recoveries were a lot less than I'm used to, just looping back down along a different track and starting again.
First set: 1:07, 1:05, 1:08, 1:06, 1:09, 1:12
Second (shortened): 0:57, 0:52, 0:52, 0:55, 0:51. 0:46 (who would've thought the 2 Aussies in the group would race the last one)
Average recoveries were 1:15 for the first lot and about 1:05 for the 2nd and I was doing quite long ones!
Got the HR into the fabled 190s on the last one, that rarely happens even at the end of a race!

Running warm up/down 38:00 [3] 6.7 km (5:40 / km)
ahr:145 max:160 shoes: White Asics

Fairly quick warm up and slower cool down - surely there's closer hills!

Wednesday May 7, 2008 #

Cycling 50:00 [2] 15.0 km (18.0 kph)

Out and back to Nics place for a Moussaka extravaganza. Her folks are over too - seems like May is the month for a Tassie parental exodus.
I like riding at night, you always see funny things. Tonight I saw a fox, a guy rollerblading in the middle of the street eating fish and chips and some bloke on a bike next to me at a set of lights said 'good evening gorgeous' to me followed by 'you look good tonight'. Now I'll take any compliment I get, but why can't it be a chick? Thank god he rode off towards Southfields.

Tuesday May 6, 2008 #

Running intervals 24:00 [5] 6.8 km (3:32 / km)
ahr:165 max:186 shoes: Mizuno Trail Bargain

Interval session with the running club. 4x2x3mins - ran out along the perimeter of the ovals for 3 mins, then got 20 secs recovery then had to get back to where we started in the following 3 mins. 2 mins recovery then do it all again. Managed a constant or negative split for all of them, a little slower on the 3rd, did about 100m less over the 6 mins. Hurt on the last one, but good hurt not struggle hurt.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

All the usual before, after and in between guff

Cycling 45:00 [2] 15.5 km (20.7 kph)

To the clubhouse from home and back.
Is it just me is suddenly the entire population of London in a good mood. Instead of people frowning at you when their dog runs in front of you on the tracks they smile and apologise. People actually greet each other on the trails now instead of looking pissed off - keep it up UK, it's not making me miss home as much... Now if you could just get a decent beach.

Running 1:43:20 [3] 20.0 km (5:10 / km) +250m 4:52 / km
ahr:149 max:165 shoes: Saucony Triumphs

Long un out round the back of Richmond Park and back through Wimbledon Common. Strugglefest for most of it, legs heavy from the beginning and was considering getting the train back from Richmond, but not being really sure where the station was made me decide to keep going.
Listening to last years Hottest 100 I downloaded thanks to the magic of bittorrent - some real corkers in there. Highlight #1 is the live recording of Harder, Better, Stronger, Faster - just hearing the audience cheering and the awesome middle section just makes me wish I was in the crowd. Discovery is a killer album.

Running 33:45 [3] 7.3 km (4:37 / km)
ahr:142 max:158 shoes: Mizuno Trail Bargain

Was feeling guilty as I ate a 6 pack of chocolately chocolate logs on the way home from the airport (damn you Marks and Spencer and all your tasty food) and it was such a nice evening I headed out of the original 2 bridges run. First time of the year I've need to pull the singlet out from the bottom of the drawer, hope it's not the last - the next few days are all forecost over 20!

Not Training 1 [2] 11.0 km ( / km)

Cinque Terre, Italy.
This aint training, I just want to gloat!
The folks are over from home, so I took them on a nice whiolesome family trip to Italy to this spot I've been wanting to get to for the past 2 years, but have never been able to work into my travel plans.
Absolutely worth the wait. Did the popular via Del' Amore walk between the five villages. Best coffee I've had this year in Corniglia, which was one of the best villages due to the fact that you had to walk up 392 steps to get to it and didn't have many tourists. Kickass pesto pizza in Vernazza too (this region is where the green stuff originates).
Originally wished I could have run it as the track was nice and wide and flat, but as it went on it became steeper, rougher, steppier and narrow with some fairly perilous dropoffs where you pretty much had to hug people coming in the other direction to get past - not good when its a sweaty, topless, ample Italian male.
Gold star day - this place gets 2 thumbs up from travel extraordinaire Patrick. If you like food, mountains, oceans or speccy walks you should come here.

Running tempo 1:07:30 [4] 12.6 km (5:21 / km)
ahr:141 max:175 shoes: White Asics

'8 Mile' Fartlek in Richmond Park with the Windmilers.
Really enjoyable run. I would have preferred a few less rest stops, but we did a nice variety of surges and sprints the whole way through to keep it interesting. Went 'Indian File' through the guts of the park on the way back which I'd never heard of or done before - pretty fun.
Went to the southern corner of the park which I'd never been in before - it was so nice down there, lots of massive old trees and undulating tracks. I'm so glad I ended up living in this part of London.

Cycling 50:00 [3] 18.0 km (21.6 kph)

To and from Raynes Park from home to the club houses.
