Running - Trail 51:23 intensity: (9:27 @3) + (28:25 @4) + (13:31 @5) 8.78 km (5:51 / km) +323m 4:57 / km

TAT. Summer Rally + 5 Nancies.
Felt crap on the Radial Trail but smooth and flowy elsewhere.
Ran up Lowry today - I find it easier to transition back to the flat section up top if I keep running up Lowry compared to walking.
Was easy to start the Nancies at the end with no one convincing me not to, but much harder to keep going without a group!

Orienteering 20:37 [3] 4.0 km (5:09 / km)
ahr:133 max:161 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

Cramming for Canadians training commences now. 2 weeks to get my skills into some sort of decent shape.
Compass practice at speed on a total white out of Chedoke (real fog).
I thought this would be an easy session to start with, but I kinda sucked in the beginning. Tried to time it so all the golfers would be gone, but still light enough for me to read the map. Was a little early - there were a couplde of stragglers playing their last hole, so jogged a bit until they had all disappeared.
The first half was a disgrace, stopping early on each of the first 5. 5 & 6 improved (though had to go offline in 6 to dodge some golfers). 7 was when it clicked - dunno what happened, but suddenly my hand was solid, the needle was steady and I felt comfortable and fast. 8 was problematic for some reason - I knew I was going the wrong direction, but couldn't reconcile the map and compass, thankfully with 9 I was back in the zone again.
Will do a similar session next week in the forest.

Running - Street race 18:33 intensity: (5 @1) + (6 @2) + (4 @3) + (35 @4) + (17:43 @5) 5.05 km (3:40 / km) +16m 3:37 / km

Peachbud 5k, Grimsby.
So clearly I'm not made for road running. I pick a realistic target (17:30), which should be doable based on my best 10k and HM times (when I was in worse shape) and I can't get within a minute of.
There are excuses I could make, but I think I'll just accept the pissweakness of it and go back to running up hills and in non straight lines.
I did pace it OK in that I was passing people constantly after the first 1k, but still feel I should have gone slower at the start. Meh.

Running - Street warm up/down 20:30 intensity: (9 @1) + (51 @2) + (11:18 @3) + (8:12 @4) 4.2 km (4:53 / km) +15m 4:48 / km
ahr:144 max:163 shoes: Adidas Adizero

Good warm up with some strides thrown in the middle. Feeling OK, the HR was a little high - putting in down to the heat.

ahr:144 max:174 shoes: No

Back in town, but still being pissweak - last shorterish one for a while.
Dang loops with a few strides. Not feeling particularly great until right towards the end.

Running - Street intervals 45:52 intensity: (2:44 @1) + (17:39 @2) + (11:42 @3) + (7:56 @4) + (5:51 @5) 8.77 km (5:14 / km) +82m 5:00 / km
ahr:137 max:184 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

So I entered the Peachbud 5k for this Tuesday, so I figure it's as good a time as any to get some speed into the legs.
Knocked out a 3x3x400m session, starting at 5k pace (3:30m/k) and then taking a few seconds off each successive set of 3.
Did this same session last year before the Longest Day 5k and felt like crap. This time was the complete opposite, every rep seemed super easy and comfortable - probably due to the conditioning that almost a year of TNTs brings, but the Super Week I've just had may have had a bit to do with it.
Went all out on the last rep. 69 secs. Like.

ahr:132 max:161 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

Fail. Had planned to head out for an hour, but I drastically overestimated my ability to run in an area I don't know with no set route without getting bored.
15 minutes of getting stuck on dead ends and private property signs was enough for me, so headed back to the hotel and did as much as I could on the treadmill.
Only thing kept me going there was try to get more distance that the guys on the bike next to me. He was cycling in jeans and either drinking coffee or texting at the same time. Odd.

Note

Stumbled across a NB factory outlet during todays travels.
Absolute heaven. $200 worth of gear for $60. Lots of cheap shoes, but none of the lightweight stuff unfortunately (but not surprisingly).
5 PM

Running - Trail 40:00 intensity: (38 @1) + (8:20 @2) + (16:30 @3) + (14:30 @4) + (2 @5) 7.22 km (5:33 / km) +126m 5:06 / km
ahr:141 max:167 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

Fairly pissweak Mona Fartlek session after a relatively long days drive (Quebec City to Maine coastline down the Moose River valley - fairly awesome in places)
Stopped in Wolfes Neck Point State Park for the run. Trails were super gnarly, rooty, rocky and lots of small ups and downs - never got a good rhythm and the HR never got high.
Awesome for O, but a pretty small park - probably not even enough room for a middle.
Finished up with seafood dinner, haddock stuffed with shrimp & crab. Awesome.

ahr:141 max:173 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

Loosener round Quebec City, blowing out the cobwebs and getting some movement back into the legs.
Just awesome... I have no words.
Now looking at the map, I even missed out a huge chunk of the city. Looking forward to more exploring tomorrow.

Mont Tremblant Ultimate XC - 35km. Epic.

So this was advertised as 35km. I'm so glad now that it was significantly less!
Plan for the race was to run my own pace, not get competitive with people I don't know and stay conservative.
In that regard, I succeeded. However, I didn't plan when I would eat during the race and got cramps from 22km on.
0-6.5km: Mostly paved or 4WD tracks. Wasn't feeling amazing through here and was worried it would be a tough day at the office. Started in about 6th place but about 5-6 people passed me along the way. 2 cups gatorade + energy shot at aid station.
6.5km-14.5km: Awesome-est section. Started with 4km of downhill, basically through terrain. Blitzed this section, passed in one guy who was nancying about in the muddy sections (and they were deceptively muddy!). Would make great O terrain, subtle contours, low vis but fast if you're good in gnarly terrain & lots of features.
The next section was about 1km wading through/climbing in and out of a beaver dammed creek - chest height in places. Then transitioned to a brutal 2km up a low flowing river. Slippery rocks and calf deep water - psychologically draining more than physical towards the end. Though I passed a few more guys, a couple others caught me up towards the end.
3 cups gatrorade+1 gel+energy shot at aid station.
Changed shoes to my Orocs at this station (they had a bag drop). Was glad to do so as my NBs were full of river gravel, but felt like a princess as all the guys I had caught just kept going.
14.5km-20km: Where the race begins according to the race notes. 750m of climb. Starts with an easy grade along quite nice trail, only 200m over 2.8km - actually felt really strong though here, so a bit frustrated not to catch any of the group that passed me. Then we cross the river and the climb begins and the trail degenerates to one of those hillside, boggy, rocky, twisting through thick forest trails that's tough to run at the best of times. So I walk a lot of this, but so is everyone else and I seem to be walking faster and passing more people, but I think most of them were on the 58k race. Reach the summit station with all the guys who passed me at the previous one. 2 cups gatorade+energy shot+500mls water (bottle)
20-24km: Undulating and gnarly trail along the ridge of the mountain. Some very fun sections but get waylaid by some cramping and stop to stretch twice. Finding it's the steeper, gnarlier stuff that sets it off. Very, very pleased to get to the aid station at the top knowing it's all downhill from here. 2 cups coke+gel+1/4 banana.
24km-finish. All downhill, ski run first, then 6km on Grand Brulee trail. Gnarly, steep, twisty and super cramp inducing. 2 stops for stretching, but I found it was better to just run through it and would eventually go away, but I wasn't going fast - this final section seemed to take forever. About half way down some hikers tell me I'm in 7th place. That'll do for me, just have to make sure no one passes me. The trail opens up once we close in on the village and I can open up again - felt really good running back through the village, picking off 13 and 21k runners.
Good day out, great race course and learnt a bit about race nutrition. But I don't plan on doing a race that long for a while!

shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

Schooling the ARK kids on how a terrain loop should be run.
A little concerning that a 13 yo was less than ten seconds behind me, but a good thing too.
Lots of fun tonight - big thanks to all those on AP who helped out tonight and throughout the year. I'm in awe of how happy people are to volunteer in this part of the world.

Running - Terrain warm up/down 8:49 [1] 0.87 km (10:05 / km) +40m 8:13 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

Warm up of the loop with turbo and also a bit with backwoods, Yasmin and Maya. Care to wager who got the muddiest?
This sub 10min training session is so convenient. I can see why West Coasters do it all the time.

ahr:143 max:183 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

TNT. 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 with 1 or 2 mins recovery. Ran on some of the new trails discovered during the update of Iroquois, the twisty turny MTB single trail south of the big field was super fun at high intensity.
Another Travesty tonight, stubbed my toe on a small stump on a downhill section. Luckily it a comical superman style sprawl and there was no impact with the bad shin.
Body is telling me it's time for a rest day, no zip in the legs tonight and was struggling to get the HR high. The Griz was breathing down my neck at every rep and kept me honest, otherwise I think the Fader would have come for me.

Monday night run, just with Duane cause the other boys thought it might rain. Faster pace than usual for a Monday for that reason.
Shin still sore on the downhills, but improving slowly day by day.

Real round the bay.
Not feeling amazing to begin with. Coming out of Mac decided to push up the hills and cruise the flats and downs. After the long surge up Olympic Drive, everything came together and was firing on all cylinders.
Was able to really put the gas on in the final section to try and get under 65 mins for 14k - quite happy with how strong I felt without it ever feeling basement like.

9 AM

Running - Trail long 1:50:00 [2] 18.0 km (6:07 / km)
shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

TNT. 9am start meant we got the Griz and hammer along as well which was good.
Shin was feeling sore early and I nearly pulled the pin, but didn't want to be pissweak so sucked it up and kept on going. It started to improve during the run, but the didn't like the extra strain on the downhills - coming off the Gulch was particularly painful. Skipped K2 and stretched it a bit, which helped a little.

ahr:137 max:163 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

Quick scoot around Cootes. One of those excuse ridden days where I feel better having gone out.
Saw my first raccoon in the wild. It made a weird noise at me when I ran past.
Shin was sore and throbbing all day - I was worried it had gotten infected. But now it looks and feels better now having gotten out, must have been the hardcore pounding at TNT last night.

ahr:144 max:183 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

TNT. Debut run of the nuEscarpment Rally, so technically PBs all around and a new world record to me.
It's a soft record though, I imagine even Super could break it. Maybe.
Was super hesitant on the gnarly sections of the Bruce and on the forest section, the word Princess comes to mind. Even with all of that, I was pretty shattered by the time Lowry came around.
Thought I'd slack off in the last section to save something for next time and I look over and see turbo bearing down on me, so had to turn in on again. Not happy Jan.

ahr:131 max:177 shoes: NB MT101s 2011.2

TNT fail.
Plan was 7 reps of the Dundurn loop. Had a fairly epic spill to rival this and landed with with my full weight on a rock, with my right shin as the primary contact point. Didn't feel too bad, so finished off the rep. Only in recovery did we notice the flesh on my shin was blowing up like a golf ball before our eyes!
Took the advice of people smarter than me and headed to the golf club for some ice, which they kindly provided in substantial amounts!
Possibly a blessing in disguise - the way my HR was climbing on the 2nd rep, I would have been joining Fader later in the session!

TNT. 4 x Lowry, 5 x Nancy, 1 x Bannistairs.
Has been a while since I've done these hills properly, they're certainly drier and faster since last I did them.
Felt really good today, odd cause I was wrecked by \the end of ARK yesterday. Maybe that's the key. Either way, I think an 87s Lowry and 26s Nancy are records for me. I should keep better track of these things.
Beaut evening out - more quality warm sunshine with no humidity. Would be nice if it stayed like this all summer.
