Orienteering race 37:36 [5] 5.7 km (6:36 / km) +80m 6:10 / km
ahr:178 max:191 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Stromlo fest Elite Race - 34 degrees I'm told!
Got started off with Sebba - went to the wrong second control on the first loop so wasn't surprised to see him in front of me at the 1st changeover.
Felt like a giant piece of crap starting off this next loop and wondered how I'd finish the whole course, so luckily no great dramas on the next loop, but too hesitant in the detail.
Picked up the final loop and saw no sign of Seb, but there were cockies all over the place so it was hard to tell. Quite enjoyed the last loop amongst all the bike jumps and even got my HR into the fabled 190s even though it felt like I was running at a speed at which grass grows.
Could have probably saved some time being less of a pansy dropping down in and climbing out of that bloody eroded creek.
Generally pleased with the result, nice to be amongst the median times instead of lagging at the back and picked up 10 bucks for the effort - I should probably slip a few dollars to whoever directed Matty P to the Womens map on the last loop...

Orienteering race 50:30 [4] 6.0 km (8:25 / km) +200m 7:13 / km
ahr:172 max:184 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Night race at Bluetts West - start of the weekend of running aplenty in Canberra.
Was surprised how quickly the pack spread out at the start and how I was only behind Muzz and Jules - maybe those couple of night races I did in the UK gave me a little more confidence in the dark? Anyway, was pretty good in that first loop, only making a bit of an error at 4 when I went straight instead of staying on the track - someone else caught me on that one and was around for the next couple of controls, I think Lachy Dow.
Ended up finishing the first loop in about 20 mins and passing Muzz when he botched 9, so was 2nd through in that split!
Unfortunately it all went to hell at 5 on the next loop, I just expected to run down the watercourse and see the control on the boulder (as we know, boulders always are in the dead centre of creeks all the time, never just to the side), so I run right past it all the way down to the fence, run back up and finally see it as I see so many people ahead streaming through and up the hill to the common 7th.
There were a couple of people in front of me on the other split on the way back so I decide I'm going to beat them, spike 8, then head down to 9 without looking at the map as I'd seen it on the pit in the previous loop and then search about 100m too high for it......
When I finally get to the control on the powerline before the final loop the guys I was planning on beating are punching it for the 2nd time...... Also let one more person pass me on 11 as well as I'm far too low.
So awesome first loop, absolute rubbish 2nd. Heaps of fun though and felt really good - HR was higher than I thought it would be cause I never felt like I was running hard!

Orienteering race 33:00 [3] 6.4 km (5:09 / km)
ahr:144 max:160 shoes: Kayanos

Decided I should go to the Schools event at Howrah as I had the time.
Pretty tired over the last couple of days and couldn't seem to get out of 2nd gear. To liven it up a bit I only allowed myself to look at the map at every 2nd control - had to cheat a few times in the circle, but mostly because it's pretty hard to see the lockable schools controls.

I have a feeling I'm going to be in a fairly disgraceful position when the results come out.

Running 58:00 [4] 8.9 km (6:31 / km) +28m 6:25 / km
ahr:147 max:181 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Tour De Hobart at 5 mile beach set by Ryan. As much as it pains me to say it, I really enjoyed tonights run - about a 50/50 split on either sandy trails or in the terrain using compass.
I have to say, after reviewing the GPS track, my compass work was exquisite (except the last one, where I didn't actually look at the compass), which means everyone else was inferior as no one was anywhere near me on all those sections. I'd say the pines there are the most runnable terrain in Tasmania.

Tonights ranking:

1. Brea: Majority leg winner
2. Patrick: Above mentioned compass extraordinaire
3. Louis: Man of his word; the only one who kept the 'let's not sprint till we get off the beach pact'
4. Ryan: Quality course kudos - especially after initial criticism, passable excuses for shoddy compass work
5. Nicko: Bankrupt of compass skills, sneaky sprint master

Running hills 46:30 [4] 5.0 km (9:18 / km) +200m 7:45 / km
ahr:129 max:176 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Hills on the Domain with Mike's posse of juniors. 12x40-60 seconds with slow jogging recovery. A few grotty places to run through, some moderate tree pushing, but never got that exhausted feel. Some of the junior girls are pretty strong.
Tassie now has a full contingent of males, females, juniors and seniors for the SA NOL races! Is this possibly the first time this has happened?

Running 43:00 [3] 6.7 km (6:25 / km) +320m 5:11 / km
ahr:142 max:160 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Loop of Ridgeway up around Chimney Pot Hill. Was meant to be a bit of a recovery run, but had to work pretty hard on the hills. Exhausted at the end - have been having trouble sleeping which is starting to catch up with me.

Running race (Summer Survival) 35:25 [5] 8.3 km (4:16 / km) +180m 3:51 / km
ahr:175 max:187 slept:5.0 shoes: Kayanos

Got a txt yesterday from Ryan asking me to do the run leg for his team (Team Tummy!!!!) as he couldn't do it cause he'd broken a nail or something. Always happy to race I said yes and didn't realise I'd be running with attackpoint legends leper and kenif! Everyone did their job well, barring Rosies deep water dismount at the end of the kayak leg and Kenif trying to run me over at the changeover.
Julia Allston gave told me before the race the run leg was awful, hilly, roads, beaches... well, I'm not sure what she likes, but I really enjoyed it - the 3rd km was all downhill (though subsequently, the 5th is all uphill as it's an out and back course) and a sections of trail that were technical enough to slow people down a lot - the old orienteering legs have their uses now and then.

Didn't go so well to begin with, felt sluggish even after a decent warm up and was chasing 2 guys who were doing the whole race solo and didn't pass them until 2.5 and 3km in. After that I was slowly reeling people in - passed about 10 overall. Unfortunately on hitting the final stretch I got a stitch and couldn't kick into the final high gear I like to at the end of a race - there were 3 runner in front I reckon I could have hauled in hormally, but wasn't meant to be. Won't be having a carboshot before a race of that intensity again.
Best part, the last guy I passed was running for third place in out category, which meant Team Tummy took 3rd place! (Though if the competition had been bagging out Ryan we would have won hands down!)

Orienteering 50:00 [3] 6.0 km (8:20 / km)
ahr:148 max:166 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Did 2x3km courses at 7 Mile Beach - I think from an old short course champs. Considering the map I was running on is over 10 years old, some of it holds up well - other parts not so much, shame really. There was an area of dense pines dotted with clearing that used to be really fun to run through - now the pines have died and there's vast sections where they've fallen over on each other like dominos has made it impossible to run through - just constant climbing over waist high brittle branches. Also the section of detailed dunes around the shops where they chopped down all the pines and just left them sitting there is totally unrunnable in places.
I'm not sure why it was never remapped since it's still a good area, you just need to know where the good parts to run are.

Running 55:00 [3] 9.3 km (5:55 / km) +370m 4:56 / km
ahr:140 max:167 weight:79kg shoes: Adidas Kanadias

As I was criticised on Wednesday for making such a long course, I thought I'd try this loop out I've been thinking about for a Tour night. Probably a little too long at the moment, maybe closer to Easter - although I have picked up a possible short cut, but it will probably involve skirting round the edge of some private property, but will save on a couple of boring ks along the edge of the highway.
Up Stringybark Gully and turn right at the top of the hill, stay on the ridge and drop down to the highway opposite that City Gate church place.
They're building a lot of new single trail on the side of the hill there that should keep the mountain bikers happy - actually the whole area looks pretty fun if you like that sort of thing.
Felt really good the whole way round, which surprised me - I had that feeling at the start that it was going to be a strugglefest.

Core & Strength 25:00 [1]

Same as Tuesday. Did some stretchy stuff afterwards, seemed to help - no soreness today.

Running 42:45 [4] 6.9 km (6:12 / km) +130m 5:40 / km
ahr:140 max:178 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Did 4x1km intervals with 2mins recovery. Did in "terrain", on the grassy slopes of the Domain below the athletics centre and TCA ground, so didn't need to push trees out of the way with my hands very often.
Splits were 4:23, 3:52, 4:22 and 3:54. Unsurprisingly, the 1st and 3rd were uphill and 2 and 4 down. Felt quite good, but never super fast.

Orienteering race 17:54 [4] 3.8 km (4:43 / km) +110m 4:07 / km
ahr:169 max:184 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Corporate Challenge on the Domain afterwards. Shock horror, there was actually non-easy navigation *and* a control site I'd never been to before.
Set the watch up to beep at me every 2 minutes for 15 seconds and this was the only time I was allowed to look at the map.
Consequently I took a bit of a crap way on the leg up over the top of the hill, but apart from that I know the area well enough for it not to be a problem

Running 58:15 [3] 7.7 km (7:34 / km) +390m 6:02 / km
ahr:142 max:184 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Usual Wednesday Tour. Ended up being longer than I thought it would, I guess all those brown lines on Knocklofty added up after a while.
Felt quite good tonight and enjoyed working on the hills, although I think I was the only one given all the complaints and whinging - honestly, it felt like I was back in the UK :)
Could really feel yesterdays core work, it was good that I was sore everywhere cause it made me really notice you use difference parts when going uphill/downhill/fast/slow etc.
Good turnout, good to see Louis Dogg Dog back from his Asian sojourn, impressive how he felt like he was getting fitter even as the run progressed!
Unfortunately we'll have to do something about the Ladies Legs after allegations of cheating. Maybe a nominated non-lady has to shadow the ladies on their short cuts???

Points:
1. Ryan: Cheating whistleblower 341
2. Nicko: Not getting lost once 134
3. Louis: Impressive fitness gradient over 55 minutes 133
4. Patrick: Boring 4
5. Brea
5. Emma: Cheaty cheaters 3 (between the 2 of them)

Core & Strength 25:00 [1]

Hurt. I need to do more of this more often.

Good thing I had nothing planned today. I got the hiccups last night for about 4 hours and when I woke up this morning it hurt to breathe.
I admit using hiccup soreness as a reason not to train is a level of softness similar to 'blister on toe'.

Running hills 50:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:33 / km) +240m 4:54 / km
ahr:142 max:182 shoes: Kayanos

Was meant to be a rest day, but got a call from Ryan who was keen to do some hills so decided to suck it up.
Did 8x1mins with 2 min recovery. Legs super heavy, but got a lot further than I used to and was quite consistent.
Quite a long cool down showing Ryany a potential sprint area. He concurs, so now that's 3 quality (urban) sprint areas I've identified.

Orienteering 36:00 [3] 4.0 km (9:00 / km)
ahr:146 max:177 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

3rd week down at Pittwater! Surprised that Ryan was actually capable of doing something on a Sunday so just had to head down again.
Control picking, 4 controls at a time giving each other 30 seconds head start. Flowed well and was picking the right features (I hope), got a bit lazy towards the end and wasn't using compass enough.
Good to do something a bit faster in the terrain.

Running 32:00 [3] 6.2 km (5:10 / km) +150m 4:36 / km

Clockwise loop around Risdon Brook Dam and extended up the hill on the Eastern side. Did some 1km surges and pushed on the slopes in order to tire myself out for..

Orienteering 19:30 [4] 3.0 km (6:30 / km) +150m 5:12 / km
ahr:165 max:178 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

A rerun of an old park race (July 2001). Aim was to focus on keeping control flow for the entire course while tired - a big weakness of mine.
Did pretty well, GPS track doesn't show any abrupt changes of colour at the start of any leg except on some of the sharp uphills, of which there were a few.
Was too hesitant on the diagonal downhill legs. Found a control, must be from a recent event cause it wasn't faded. Probably should have gone back and got it, but forgot until now.
Incidentally I did 12 minutes faster than in 2001, though it's fairly likely the main aim of me going to that event than would have been as a hangover cure.

Running 40:00 [3] 6.9 km (5:48 / km) +300m 4:46 / km
ahr:143 max:170 shoes: Kayanos

Had a very busy day so didn't get onto the mountain like I planned, so had to settle for a quick jaunt around Stringybark Gully on my way home after dinner.
Belly was full of food and legs didn't want to go after yesterday, so it was a bit of a struggle to get round. Great time of the day to go though, sun was setting through the trees and had good views out over the Derwent - the hills on the other side of the river were turning all the nice blues and purples.

Running (Fiddlers Handicap) 19:50 [5] 5.0 km (3:58 / km) +90m 3:38 / km
ahr:173 max:183 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Well that's a PB, by about 40 seconds. My original aim was to get under 20 by Easter, so now looks like I'll have to aim for under 19 - which is gonna be a lot of work, but what's the point in easy goals.
Definitely helped having people to chase and having Fagg start behind me - even if he did decide to cut 400m or so of the course for some reason and appear in front of me after 3 minutes.
Happy with that, but keen to get faster.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Knew I'd have to warm up to do a decent time - even did a few surges and stridey things. Cool down was quite tepid.

Running 42:00 [3] 7.7 km (5:27 / km)
ahr:154 max:196 shoes: Kayanos

Tour De Hobart at Howrah. Smaller group this week and Pookie (Pikie) Bear bailing half way through cause he had to do his hair and make up for a concert.
Was a bit too generous on most of the ladies legs, Brea won about half of the legs, but at least the highlight was when Ryan choked on the leg through Clarence High, somehow mistaking a tree for a flag pole. I guess it is quite tough to read the map once you go off track for some.
A few tough legs towards the end running on the soft sand along Howrah Beach and a bit of sprint training with nice twisty bit through Howrah Primary. Enjoyed it.

Points:
1. Patrick
1. Nicko
1. Brea 1276
4. Ryan 8

Running 42:00 [4]
ahr:125 max:176 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Hills in terrain with some of the juniors. Started around 30s and slowly got longer up to 50s x10. Was planning on doing a couple more, but the last one was a killer and hurt too much so I thought I'd save some for next time.

Running 30:00 [2] 5.0 km (6:00 / km) +70m 5:36 / km
ahr:118 max:134 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

2nd week in a row everyone pikes on the Monday run, but this time I decide to head out and do Jos loop anyway.
Quickly became apparent that my legs were smashed from the weekend, so changed my mind and just headed out the pipeline track for 15 mins and turned around.
Was the right thing to do, felt heavy to start with, but it got easier and better as the run went on. Got rained on a fair bit.

Orienteering 1:25:00 [3] 10.0 km (8:30 / km)
ahr:152 max:171 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Mike set a course down at Pittwater (with tapes and all!), headed out planning on cutting in short - 10k in 90 minutes seemed like a large ask after yesterday, but got round with time to spare.
Think I can do Pittwater now, at least at 1:7500. Was able to pick big features, find corridors and read roughly for each leg without the need to run out to the track and back it. Started to tire a lot on the way back and made a few errors, but nothing major and was always able to pick it back up easily. Also made a few errors when running with others, Nicko caught me up half way round and we did a few legs together and we both cocked up a longer one - both of us losing concentration from running together and another leg I did with Jess when we came into the detail too early - she ran off the wrong way and I sneakily ducked into the control!
Good day out - bit of a confidence booster too, feel like I can do proper orienteering again.

Running 4:05:00 [2] 20.5 km (11:57 / km) +1300m 9:04 / km
ahr:137 max:165 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Needed an epic. I've wanted to explore Freycinet further than Mt. Amos or Wineglass Bay so I decided to run up Mt Freycinet. Ended up being just as much of a walk as a run due to it being a lot steeper and rockier than I thought it would be, but killer views and some speccy terrain.
Wouldn't bother with climbing Freycinet again, basically rockclimbing and a pretty uninteresting peak - Mt. Montagu is was better.
Shattered coming back along Wineglass Bay, stopped and went for a swim, was so refreshing but made the climb back over the saddle sooo hard.

Running 40:30 [3] 7.7 km (5:16 / km) +80m 5:00 / km

Bicheno run. Out to Redbill Beach and around the town along the Foreshore track to the Blowhole. Nice day and the track is pretty sweet, some sections on the big chucks of granite that line the coast.
Was thinking that Bicheno would make a decent sprint area next time we have a biggish event on the East Coast (well, better than St. Helens), with the shoreline, and the 2 hills are covered in big lumps of granite and lots of opportunities for spectating

Running 41:00 [3] 6.2 km (6:37 / km) +200m 5:42 / km

Tour De Hobart @ Mt. Nelson. Pretty short and criusy, but good races at the end of each leg with captn Ryanetta - though they were usually decided one who would play the dirtiest. Quite pleasing that Mr. Nice Guy is finally showing his sneaky side! I need to work on developing a quiet/fast running style to enable better overtaking.
Group size continues to grow nicely, 7 total tonight - it's going to get hard with distributing the points!

Wasn't gonna bother today cause I had to get up early (8am) for a preliminary eye lasering appointment and felt crap all day.
However, after a Voltage from Gloria Jeans (my new favourite chilled caffeinated beverage), I perked up so did the Belbins loop. Got back a little early so ran out and back along the track to make a nice round 40 - I'm officially anal retentive.

Running hills 40:00 [4] 6.0 km (6:40 / km) +260m 5:29 / km
ahr:132 max:173 shoes: Adidas Kanadias

Since everyone piked on the planned mountain run and I had no Ipod to keep me company solo, I did my first hill session for a good long while, I think since I left London - so August???
So my new month resolution is to run in terrain twice a week and for one of them to be one of the speed sessions, so this is it.
Went out along the loop road of the domain and did 4x loop road to top, break, then 4 x loop road to track. The longer being 300m/35m climb and the other being 200m/25m climb. Quite a good hill, no low vegetation, but uneven and rocky - enough to keep you bounding and lifting your legs up which is what I wanted.
Won't do it in the same place every time as you could already see where I'd done it and the last thing the domain needs is more tracks!

Running 35:00 [2] 6.3 km (5:33 / km)
ahr:128 max:142 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Met up with Nicko, Lee and Brea for a long run session with a bit of navigating. This section is just from the car park to the point of 7 Mile Beach along the beach the whole way.
Nice cruisy pace (though we still dropped Lee!), quite a few (non nude) people walking a fair way out towards the point today.

Orienteering 1:20:00 [3] 7.3 km (10:58 / km)
ahr:129 max:163 shoes: Inov8 Roclites

Set a course to take us back to the car park, long legs ~500m to 1km with no pussying along the track.
We made Brea do the first couple cause they were the hardest, then took turns. The beauty of that yellow area right out at the point is that if you climb to the top of one of the hills you can see everything and pretty much work out where you need, but once you drop down you can't see anything but the dune in front of you.
Brea did well, considering how unconfident she was, actually we were all pretty good - even Nicko! I made sure I did the one in the spooky forest - I love that area. Good session.
