Orienteering 1:09:45 intensity: (5 @0) + (18:26 @1) + (10:15 @2) + (3:11 @3) + (23:03 @4) + (14:45 @5) 7.38 mi (9:27 / mi) +431m 8:00 / mi
ahr:171 max:243

CompassSport Cup. Took it steady all the way round. Had one eye on my heart rate and it was all over the place. Not sure if this was a connection issue or not. At some points it was way over 200 but I did not feel too bad. At other points, feelings of elevated heart rate did correspond with a high reading. It took an age to get back to normal again after the run too. Tried to take a manual reading but struggled to find my pulse.

Did not feel too bad in myself when oing and enjoyed myself. Two small misses but generally good.

Running 7:43 intensity: (15 @0) + (7:28 @1) 0.83 mi (9:18 / mi) +36m 8:12 / mi
ahr:122 max:148

Easy run to the start. Funnily I was really looking forward to it.

Running 40:01 intensity: (14:01 @0) + (26:00 @1) 4.32 mi (9:16 / mi) +47m 8:57 / mi
ahr:101 max:119

Easy run with Clare around Kielder reservoir. Damp, windy and desolate but enjoyable all the same. Track was really undulating which would make the marathon (taking place next week) a toughie.
6 PM

Note

So looked out my heart rate monitor and replaced the battery. Going to run with this for the foreseeable (or until I lose it again / forget).

Running 40:00 intensity: (36:00 @3) + (4:00 @5) 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Run from home to see how I am holding up. Warmed up for 10 minutes and then threw in 4 x 1 minute efforts, 2 on the flat and then 2 uphill. Chest tight but ok through the first 2. Struggled with the hills and was walking by the time I got to the top of the last one. Easy run home, feeling ok and enjoying the endorphin hit from the reps.
7 PM

Note

so a wise runner I know once told me that you can't uncook a burnt turkey. I think I am finally working out that I am cooked and more than a bit singed.

Really frustrating as feel ok in myself and when running steadily. I know I need to be sensible but it is frustrating as I don't have an obvious problem like an injury or an illness.

Decided not to do the English champs races tomorrow and will jog round the compass sport cup race. This is a real blow as I wanted to run well for the team, but 95% certain that if I raced I would not run well and would not score.

Not going to feel sorry for myself as really enjoyed doing the Dragon's back but I supposed this is part of the learning experience of doing an Ultra of this kind in respect of the long tail of recovery.

Note
(rest day)

Too busy watching Rashomon and listening to PaulF talk about the "truth" - sounds like a cult or something.......

Running 54:00 [2] 6.2 mi (8:43 / mi)

Run home and then was going to do some hills but feeling pretty wiped. Discussed the situation with coach Clare and decided to have an easy day, and stayed in (whilst Clare got fish and chips !).

Running 55:00 [1] 6.5 mi (8:28 / mi)

Easy run home - the now usual route out to coppice track and back down the valley. Got a high 5 from Clare along the valley who was out on her run and running in the other direction. Feeling ok on the run.
