Running 1:23:02 [3] 4.09 mi (20:18 / mi) +951m 11:47 / mi

From our apartment we could see a big "hill". I bet Clare that I could run up it in 20 minutes, she looked at a map and said it would take me 45 minutes. It took me just over 30 (she therefore won the bet). Worked out afterwards that it involved over 800m climb in 2 miles so was steeper than I thought. Great views from the top though - with an eagle for company. Spent some time admiring the bird of prey till I realised the thing he was circling was actually me and that I should think about heading down....

Orienteering 43:44 [4] 3.14 mi (13:55 / mi) +209m 11:32 / mi

Last day of orienteering. Despite missing my start (misread my start time on a faded number) ran pretty cleanly. Aim was to know where I was, where I was going and to look up. Fact that it was by far the most visible and runnable terrain helped a lot. It was 4/5ths of the men's middle race from the day before. Safe to say that Thierry need not getting scared yet.

Running 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Orienteering 53:33 [4] 4.7 mi (11:24 / mi) +35m 11:08 / mi

Day 5. First of our early starts (8.00) and struggled to get the orienteering juices flowing. I was in good company in the mistake stakes though - Janne Salmi caught me up on way to number 6 (which I missed badly) and I saw him again at number 7 and then at number 8. Good fun.

Day 4. Epic long race. Great course which again humbled me - as Clare said during the week the terrain really amplified any orienteering mistake you made and my amp was turned up to 11. 70 % was good and clean, 20 % ok but scrappy and 10 % was terrible. Enjoyed myself despite the mistakes and even didn't begrudge the planners for sending us up to the top of the hill (to have an amazing view off the cliffs at the top).

I managed to catch and pass Alex over 15 minutes during the first half of the course (without me seeing him). He in turn then passed me and took 15 minutes out of me without me seeing him. We consequently finished in about the same time which was a bit mad.

Running 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm up and down.

Orienteering 1:05:48 [4] 4.27 mi (15:24 / mi) +73m 14:38 / mi

Day 3. Massive mistake on control 1 (parallel error) of over 14 minutes really summed the day up. I got better after this and took it very slow and steady - which worked ok. Finished the day with a smile on my face.

Orienteering 20:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

Warm up and warm down. Warm down with Alex running up to Le Revard. Simply stunning views from up there.

Orienteering 31:41 [2] 2.78 mi (11:24 / mi) +129m 9:57 / mi

Ran round the sprint qualifier with Alex. Really good course and great fun. Don't think I disqualified myself.

5 PM

Orienteering 13:06 [2] 1.53 mi (8:33 / mi) +10m 8:23 / mi

Started to run the sprint final but they had closed off the fun bit (the castle) so I curtailed the run.

Great day of spectating - shame about the controversy (which the organisers could have avoided in IMHO) but some very fine results from GBR.

Running 19:36 [1] 1.81 mi (10:50 / mi) +69m 9:41 / mi

We parked the other side of the area to save some time driving and to avoid the prospect of a long walk to assembly. The payoff for our cleverness was a 2 mile run.

Running 17:38 [1] 1.88 mi (9:23 / mi) +63m 8:30 / mi

Run back. Feeling very groggy and slow.

Orienteering 1:21:55 [4] 6.71 mi (12:12 / mi) +493m 9:56 / mi

2nd day of the orienteering. Better today, but our course was quite generously planned. Two big misses of 2 - 3 minutes but ok. Struggling to find any kind of aggression or rhythm in the terrain. Enjoyed the orienteering though (although I was secretly hoping that it would be planned harder).
