Cycling 4:42:52 [2] 52.87 mi (5:21 / mi)
ahr:98 max:155 shoes: Trek Domane SL6 Bike

8.45am: Beautiful day. Carol and I cycled out to Shawmount where we met up with Carl on a new route out River Road, through Conshohocken over the river along 23 to Bridgeport and then on Henderson Road and back to 23 to Balley Forge Park. Through the park on 23 until Pawlings Road . Joined the bike path at Pawlings Road and back into city with a stop at Spring I’ll coffee shop. A good ride with a good number of hills1,750 feet of climb. Tired by end.

Orienteering race 18:35 [5] 1.68 mi (11:04 / mi)
ahr:151 max:169 rhr:59 slept:8.0

11.20am: NAOC Sprint: Carcross, Yukon. A fun sprint with a mixture of around the village and in forest. The course overprinting was very light and hard to read. Had a slow start and ended up going to 3 before 2, but distance short so no too big a disaster. Really enjoyed the race and the mixture of urban(if you can legitimately call the village of Carcross 'urban') and woods.

Note

After sprint and awards ceremony where the USA won both cups, Alison and I drove to Skagway in Alaska. A beautiful drive, saw the smoldering wild fire south of Carcross. Alas it was raining in Skagway which seemed to be a tourist trap for the large cruise ships. That said some nice old buildings too. A fun day.

Orienteering 13:52 [4] 1.5 mi (9:15 / mi)

NAOC Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada: Relay- Sport Grey Mountain Biathlon Range Leg 1
Ran first leg as part of the DVOA 6 point Sport team with Greg Balter and Wyatt. pretty simple orienteering around the biathlon area with intriguing controls on 3D animal archery targets, including one being a dinosaur! Ran hard and no mistakes. We won which was exciting.

More important Alison ran the 2nd leg for the USA women’s team and had a good run giving Ali Crocker a lead. So Tori, Alison and Ali won the women’s senior relay .

10.49am: NAOC Lewis Lake, Yukon - Middle
Really interesting terrain with few paths and a mixture of hills and reentrants. Interesting course. Two key mistakes that cost me around 20 minutes. 3-4 I lost concentration and got off line then not sure what happened. Floundered around and eventually got control. Bigger mistake was 5-6. It appears in hindsight I went on a line about 10 degrees off. Eventually I had to try to work my way back to 5 then walked slowly on a bearing to 6. Other than those two major errors a couple of minor ones, but overall I really liked the course.
An interesting observation: I looked at the old map of the area and the contours were much easier to read and seemed to reflect the terrain better. It just shows the difference in what baseline level is used for the contours.

12.45pm: NAOC - Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada - Long - Croucher Creek
Good course, not overly difficult technically, just physical terrain. Had slight problem with control 5 as there was a definite group of boulders not far from the control that wasn’t on the map. 5-6 cut through on straight line to start with then took the road trail option as tired and little thinking required. Control 8was noted as a shallow depression, there was a shallow depression just before the control depression which certainly wasn’t shallow. Drifted to the right on way to 9.9-10was a bear, heavy undergrowth and seemed to take for ever to get to trail. This is the area a number of people saw a bear chewing berries, alas I did not. Happy with result considering how little orienteering I have done recently.

Event: NAOC 2018

Orienteering 36:34 [3] 1.88 mi (19:27 / mi)
ahr:137 max:185

NAOC - Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada: Model event
11.25am: Did the model event choosing options to avoid trails where possible. Interesting terrain with a lot of contour features. Have to focus on map to know whether a hill or depression as not obvious in places. It was well worth while getting out on map.
Listened to a talk/ briefing on how to deal with bears which was really interesting.
Good to be orienteering again with Alison. Glad she persuaded me to go to NAOC.
