Orienteering race 1:04:17 [5] 3.1 km (20:44 / km)

US Champs Day 2 Pound Ridge.

Lovely forest, good map, nice course, weather clear but humid, but very mediocre performance.

5 minute error on 5. Veered off too far to the left. Think I almost was at control 2. Realized I had to go east, and the trail would catch me. Found the control, but not after quite a sojourn.

Stupid error on 7. From 6, angled off to the trail planning on using the trail crossing as a turning point. Came to the crossing, but only saw 3 trails like a junction, not a crossing. Rather than stopping for a moment and looking more carefully, I saw a junction further up on the map, and figured I must have missed the crossing. In retrospect, I know it was impossible. It wasn't a true crossing, but the trail on the left took off a few meters past the one on the right and was not real distinct. I ran back up the hill for 200 m or so before I realized what I had done. At least a 6 minute error.

Day 1 Brown Y US Champs Pound Ridge NY.
Generally a pretty good day. I was certainly able to read the map much better than yesterday. Lost a minute or two on 1. Was on the spur just north of where the control was, but figured it out fairly quickly. Bigger 6 minute error on 5. Aimed off too far to the left coming down to the road, and turned left ( when I should halve turned right). Saw a trail just before the bend and it seemed to match up (although there was supposed to be water at the trail junction, and none was there.). However, I made the map fit the terrain until the trail petered out at a pond. Oh, oh! Decided to go back to the main trail, but as I was running back, I found the pond and realized what I had done, but I wasted about 6 minutes or so. However, I'm only 5 minutes out of second, so not in too bad a shape.

Beautiful woods and day. Lots of fun.
