Orienteering race 1:41:42 [5] *** 4.3 km (23:39 / km) +200m 19:11 / km
ahr:134 max:157 spiked:9/11c

Almaden Green course. Derek Maclean course setter. Two bad legs, 6 and 7. Six had to be one of the most physical legs I have ever done. The red course, which put in 2 controls between 6 and 7. probably had the optimal route choice for this leg, but it was way out of the way. I struggled up a steep hillside, and for some reason decided to go NW around a big patch of fight, but it became virtually impassable, and had to turn back. Bob who had started 8 minutes behind me caught up to me then. Also had problems from 7 to 8 with another 9 minute error.

Actual distance ran, 6.27 km and 218 m climb, although it felt like a 1000 m.

Orienteering Field Checki 4:08:00 [2] 11.0 km (22:33 / km) +465m 18:37 / km

Field checked MT. Flagged the two furthest blue controls and another control on the east. Explored a big green area. Poorly mapped. Would not be too bad a terrain if mapped properly. Then did the rest of the advanced controls, except for the final 4 or so. One more long day, and all of the controls should be flagged.

Note

Sort of bummed that I have not done any exercise all week. I was working 5 straight days at Doctor's Medical Center, so didn't even get an afternoon off. I have 2 more straight 5 day weeks in mid October at the County Hospital. However, when working there, I can sometimes take a run during lunch hour, or at least walk the mile into downtown for lunch and another mile back. Starting in Dec. I am definitely going to try to have at least one full day off a week, plus the half day at Pittsburgh or Richmond (although Richmond usually turns out to be at least 6 hours, and sometimes up to 8 hours.)

Finally got around to going over my MT courses and looking at the good suggestions Martin gave me.

Still have not caught up with all of the e-mails George and Eric have been having regarding the long Team Trial course. I have to get up to Boggs early in Oct. Was going to go in Dec., but realized it could possible be snowing then. Want to get the courses pretty well finalized before I go to France for 5 weeks at the end of Jan. and all of Feb. Will do some fine touch up in March and April before the event.

Our new solar photovoltaic system is completed, and PG&E has installed the time of use meter. So far this week, we have only used 6 kv of electricity from PG&E, and have more peak period kv generated than we used, so probably did not have to pay anything for electricity this week. however, the days are getting shorter and the rainy season is about to start, so the solar electricity will decrease, but should really kick in again in spring and summer.
