Running 1:11:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:44 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Booked a nice and early flight back from Hobart to Canberra so that we would make it into work on time... Only it was a public holiday. Still, not complaining! Nice sunny day and thought I'd kick off a good couple of months of training with a solid run from Campbell Park taking in Hackett Hill, Majura Pines and Mt Majura. Didn't feel too bad, which was nice (although it makes me wonder why I felt so wrecked yesterday). Bumped into Lizzie and Sarah on the way back to the car, which was also nice.

Orienteering race (Aus Relay Champs) 44:00 [5] 7.0 km (6:17 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Great area for a relay and really tricky courses. Lachy and Olle did a good job setting me off about 30secs behind Josh for NSW. Didn't see him early through the first couple of km but screwed #4 up by a min or so and there he was so must've passed him on the long leg somewhere. A bit behind through the next couple and feeling really tired. Together at #7, then I was lucky enough to have the shorter gaffle and didn't see him again - really pleased to not let the other 2 down and take home the trophy for the Cockies!

However, it was another ropey run for me technically and, although feeling ok running, my terrain speed (or maybe speed full stop) is pretty bad. Time to do some training I guess.

Orienteering race (Aus Long Champs) 1:46:00 [5] 16.0 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

4th again behind NZ junior Tim, Robbie and Bryan. Quite a disappointing performance technically - silly mistakes on #11 (hit road to south!), #13 (way left), #18 (to the right), #20 (above) costing a good 3 or 4 mins all up. Still, hit #26 with a 1min lead and went and binned 4mins on #27 - game over. Also scrappy through the last couple. 95mins should've won the race really. Physically pretty mediocre - felt ok running the whole time, but couldn't get a decent pace going. Still, really enjoyed it - absolutely fantastic terrain with so much variety in one race.

Orienteering race (Aus Sprint Champs) 16:48 [5] 4.0 km (4:12 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Really cool sprint in Bicheno on Tassie's East Coast. Half the course was on granite slabs on the sea front, which was quite unusual and pretty tricky. Really enjoyed it and felt quite good running. Only made a few minor wobbles. I was off the pace though - Rune turned up (on a whistle stop trip to Aus for the AFL grand final!) and destroyed everyone, and Bryan and Tim (NZ junior) were running quicker too, so I ended up 4th. Disappointing, but a good kick up the arse to do more training.

Some early morning 6x3mins on the beach in Stanley. Then drove over to Nawawntapu NP and saw more wombats than you can shake a big stick at.

Running 2:16:00 [2] 18.0 km (7:33 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Long, but relatively gentle, run in the north of Tassie up Mount Van Dyke and Mount Rowland - pretty spectacular scenery, although it was quite chilly and I did get snowed on at one point. Legs seemed to hold up ok after the weekend.

Orienteering race (Tassie Long Champs) 1:28:00 [5] 14.0 km (6:17 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Same area as yesterday, but more spur/gully with granite outcrops. Found it pretty draining forest with lots of branches and undergrowth to fight through, and the 2.5m contour hills felt every bit as big as they looked. Set off ok but got really tired half way round and ended up crawling home. Pretty clean run though apart from a few wobbles in the middle of the course which turned out to be just enough to win again. Not happy with my shape though - work to do. Grace was pretty impressive today though with a 10minute winning margin!

Orienteering warm up/down 40:00 [2] 6.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Includes a bit of time at Royal George putting out controls for the schools champs.

Orienteering race (Aus Middle Champs) 41:00 [5] 6.0 km (6:50 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Cracker course in really tough tin mining terrain with some fairly tough vegetation and steep erosion gullies. Had a pretty crap run really - Bryan nearly caught me 2mins early on, then dropped a fair bit at #16 - 35mins was definitely doable. Fortunately (for me) everyone struggled a bit with the terrain though so I ended up doing just enough for the win :o)

Orienteering 41:00 [4] 7.0 km (5:51 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Pre-ran the Aus Schools Champs senior boys course at Royal George (expertly planned by Bert and Jan). Nice course in some pretty runnable bushland. Felt a bit heavy but loosened up as it went on. It turned out the boys went a couple of mins quicker than me in the race, which wasn't that surprising.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Put out a few flags which served as a decent warm down.
