Run 1:40:00 [2] 13.5 km (7:24 / km) +450m 6:21 / km
shoes: Montrail Rogue Racer

Have felt a little lazy the last few days. It seems like I'm feeling more jet lagged than usual for a westward trip. We came out to Salmon Arm for Ally's birthday last night and stayed at Sean and Juliann's. This morning we ran the first part of the Reineker Creek trail. It is an old hiking trail that is sometimes mountain biked now. I've never made it out to ride it - thought we'd run it to see if it is worth a trip. It was a nice run - especially enjoyed the start which switchbacked nicely. The undergrowth is encroaching on the trail in spots. We looped back via the old roads (out and back would have been more interesting). It would be a fun bike trail but I'm not sure it is worth a specific side trip (and it is a 30 minute drive out of town).

Note

Bittersweet travel day home. Halfway through the trip I felt like maybe a month was enough but after two months you get into the routine of being on holidays and going back home (even through I am not going back to work quite yet) seems tough. We had a scenic flight out of Nice - I could see the Col D'Allos that we climbed Friday. Also flew over Alpe D'Huez and had a view of Mt Blanc from a distance (man is it big). Watched an interesting documentary called "Le Ride" about Phil Keogan and a buddy riding the 1928 Tour de France route on period bicycles to see what it was like for the first kiwi to ride the Tour de France. The Tour in those days seemed like a sufferfest with a high attrition rate. Kind of like the early days of AR;) Riding across the Pyrenees in two days (600km and 12000m of climbing) would do that...

Paddle 1:20:00 [2] 8.0 km (6.0 kph) +60m

Last paddle in the Mediterranean - this time from Villefranche. It was forecast to be windier today so the sheltered bay was a good choice. On the way out the water was quite calm but we got into some swell when we tried to leave the bay. On the way back the wind had increased so some extra work paddling into it at times (though no waves as it was coming from the east). A very scenic bay and though there are lots of boats anchored in it the overall boat traffic seemed lower than yesterday. Went for a swim afterwards and found myself in a huge school of tiny fish. At first it seemed like an optical illusion as the water was mainly shimmering (they were tiny and grey) but definitely thousands of fish... so cool.

Hike 1:40:00 [2] 9.0 km (11:07 / km) +650m 8:10 / km

Hiked up from Eze bord de Mer to Eze via Nietzche's path. It was pretty hot at first but improved as we got into some shade. I still soaked my shirt - I really seem to sweat more than most people...

We had some nice views of the water and the cliffs. Also cool to wander around the narrow village streets. Continued upwards to the top of Mt. Bastide but as we got to the top some fog started forming (which then disapated when we descended a few hundred meters!). Finished with a swim in the Med to cool off.

Paddle 1:30:00 [2] 9.5 km (6.3 kph) +7m

We are spending the last couple days near Nice. A bit of a shock to the system to return to the hot and humid coast (Jausiers though warm during the day was cool at cool night with a more typical mountain climate). The goal was to explore a bit more of the coast by SUP - today we started in Beaulieu sur Mer and paddled on the easter side of Cap Ferrat. We had good conditions when we started but building wind made the return trip a little tougher. I think our balance is so much better after all the open water paddling here as we both stayed on our feet in conditions that would have been a challenge before.

Interested to check out the expensive villas from the water. Lots of people out enjoying the beaches on the sunny day. So many boats too... too many at times but cool to experience the scene.
