9 AM

Bike (Road) 2:20:00 [2] 63.0 km (27.0 kph) +525m

Another great weather day. Started the ride a little after 9am and already comfortable in just the jersey. Very nice group ride with Sean, Rich, Juliann and Courtney. Peter de Toit also tagged along for a bit after we ran into him. The river is running pretty high and unfortunately has taken the road out near the bridge to Hullcar so no loops possible unless you hit the highway. Only my second time on Yankee Flats Road and it was quite nice.

Run 2:08:00 [4] 14.5 km (8:50 / km) +550m 7:25 / km
shoes: Raptor Red 1

Sage Stomp Long. Started first as needed to get on the road as soon as possible. Also wanted to finish before it got really hot. As it was I still got pretty hot and refilled twice during the race (750ml of water total). Again a great day - forest was green and balsam root was in bloom. Felt solid physically for the first 3/4 then started lagging. Should have eaten something perhaps though it just might be fitness (or the big climb back up from the east side of the map). A couple spots where I spent 30-60 seconds looking for the control when I was right next to it. One big (10 min) mistake on 8 where I stopped looking at the compass and convinced myself that the hillside across the swamp was the hillside I wanted. A good number of long legs with multiple route choices. Pretty happy with route choices in general - a few spots could have been slightly better. Didn't find the 1:15,000 that bad on this map for some reason.

Event: Sage Stomp

Run 50:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (35:00 @2) 4.0 km (12:30 / km)
shoes: Raptor Red 1

Training map at Sage Stomp. Went at a pretty casual pace which led to a clean run. More technical than I expected with a lot of subtle contour changes. Afterwards went backwards on Courtney's map but didn't see her after 5 controls which wasn't a great sign. It turned out to be a little tricky for her.
2 PM

Run 48:00 [4] 5.0 km (9:36 / km) +200m 8:00 / km
shoes: Raptor Red 1

Middle distance at Sage Stomp. Great weather this weekend for the event. First real pulse of summer. Being at a little higher elevation helped (1000m) but it was still pretty hot. Had a good run and really enjoyed the map. Was running pretty clean through 10 (the usual few seconds here or there) and I even thought to myself wow I might actually have a clean run for once but I jinxed myself and proceeded to lose a few minutes at 11. Thought I was further than I was and then compounded things by thinking I was higher than I actually was. Other than that a pretty respectable run I thought.

Bike 1:20:00 intensity: (28:00 @1) + (52:00 @4) 19.0 km (14.2 kph) +500m

A warm up putting some signs up and then the first RCA XC bike race - fivers now not twoonies. Was pleased to see a turnout of 21 riders which beats all the events last season I think. Lots of new faces too - we changed how we insure the events so hopefully that leads to more people who might consider coming out for only one event.

I felt pretty good. First climb was behind Cookie and watched Brendan pull away easily. Cookie was slower than usual in the single track (just recovered from knee surgery). Passed him easily on the first road section but then proceeded to crash at the bottom of Black Forest. It was a little dark in the woods with the weather moving in and went too wide on a corner losing my front wheel. Only lost 10 seconds and was behind Isaac now. Passed him after the Stimulus descent and then seemed to hold a 15 second gap for a while. On the second lap I thought I had put more time on him but it was like he just appeared out of nowhere as we hit Mickey's. Pushed hard to the end but he outsprinted me on the last few hundred meters of road. A couple minutes behind Brendan.
