Raid the Hammer: Silence Beckons takes to the field with a full iron folk team, however with only one experienced navigator. Map #1 went well with a long run to Map #2. Slow start to CPA but fine to B. Got messed up on a trail and ended up at D instead of C. Really messed up next going the wrong direction on a trail. Bushwacked back to the major trail, figured out my trail error and hit C. Error - 20:00. Back to D but left the wrong way to E and took the long way there. Error - 5:00 Quick to F and Map # 3a. This map was just over the river up the hill, down the hill over the river and up the other side. Iron folk commented on the water temperature with the crossings. Got stuck with a group on Map #3B but hit 9 to 11, easy. We were going to go down the crevasse to 12b but the slow crowd in front made us rethink our strategy so we ran trail through the easy woods to 12a, through the thorns and down the cliff the 13. We learned we were 10:00 over the cut of and could not go the map #4. We did a bit of training with the others navigating through the team matrix before returning to 23 and the run home. Iron folk did not like the side hill traverse in the team matrix but ran home fast passing teams but with me, the elderly, slowing them down.

All and all a good race, taking ingenue into a long Raid! May have a few converts for future races as the Iron folk thought this was the hardest race they had done. Running roads is different than traipsing through the bush. Personally, wondering if I am getting too old for the full raid but GHO SLO still is out there having a great time. Need a nav partner for help though!
