First race of the Ontario Championships . Started out okay taking trail to CP1, down the creek to the control, then went on an adventure to CP3. Cross country through the green to CP3. Hit it easy enough but poor route choice. Much slower than others later when compared. Brain cramp going to CP4 as I started to head towards 5 but realized the mistake but lost time. Back to CP5 and now on to CP6 by major cross country route. Bad choice off the bat as I went through dense green to hit the trails. Planned to take ridge using pond as a reference to the control on the far side. Out of line I hit a trail but realize I am on the wrong one. Had trouble locating though. After wandering around ridges, I bailed west and finally hit the original trail, run it north, hit hill saddle, around swampy lake to the control. Yeech! Loss of 20 minutes minimum. On bearing to CP7 no problem, on to CP8, around lakes to CP 9, skirting the swamp. Back around the swamp to trail up to CP10 using a clearing. Up to hilltop, counted 4 trails to hit CP11, through clearing to trail and beyond to CP 12 on ridge and finish chute.
Not fast due to hamstrings and bruised left foot. Wore ankle supports and football spikes. Light rain after start. Not much speed or running legs! Moscow thumb compass worked well but need map skill improvement.

Ontario Sprint Championships at Durham Conversation Area. Could have fallen asleep after lunch but ready to go. All men from 21 to 54 are on the same course. Nice start to the race through bush to a trail and around to the control. Out to field and across to control 2. Passed by ML in woods traverse to road, across field to CP 3. Short forest run to CP 4 & CP5. Approach was off a little causing me to have to cross fallen trees. Down through field to trail east. Followed shore to CP6 but was confused by a swampy section not on the map. Caused a delay deciding that this was the case. Out on trail to road and run to CP7 , followed hedge line south side and noticed Randy Kemp on the other side. Not warmed up yet, decided to take the lower road to CP9. Legs did not feel like climbing. Two kitty corners on lower trial, likely made this the best route choice for me. Through bush to clearing, down to road and followed road to CP 10. Back down the road, passed the front gate parking lot to CP 11. Had decided to go around swamp to CP12 but missed trail and swamp and hit lower trail to CP12. Meet Randy Kemp at control. Ran out to campground, along and up roads to CP 13. Error looking for control at washrooms when it was behind a tree in front. Lost 10 seconds with error pointed out by campers. Down roads to CP14, through white to CP15 up road to CP16. Eugene catches me at this control and we dance for a few seconds. On to CP17 and down the finish chute. Am warmed up now and actually have a fast finish.
Not fast enough at this time to get a better sprint time. Interesting event as one can compare all the men's time, except those over 54. My splits were not that bad but overall speed, Yeech!
