Orienteering race 2:12:00 [4] **** 7.25 mi (18:12 / mi)
spiked:7/15c slept:7.0 shoes: Adidas CornerBlitz

2007 Turkey Trot at Albion Hills hosted by the Ukrainian Club. Course set by EM. Beautiful day! Wore both ankle and right knee support. Legs, hamstrings in particular felt tight after baseball yesterday. Planned to take it easy but needed the O-training before Ontario Champs. As the Moscow thumb compass had worked in practice I took it in the race but with base plate back up. Hit control 1 readily though took my time. Control 2 was an fun route choice around a lake using trails. The Duke passed me going the alternate route around the lake, making comments about my coach. Thought I should ask him after the race which thumb I am supposed to be marking my map location with. Slow running only for me today. Missed 3 but corrected though lost time. Over the hill, around the swamp and up the trail to 4 though the trail seemed off a bit. The starters warned us though and the map was 2004. Bike trials are changed regularly here. Made a mistake going to 5 but remembered making the same mistake in the past and corrected quicker though I had to go through dense green. Saw GB who had previously passed me on the way to 2 at 5. Through green to 6 across field and then entered long leg to 7. Decided to use point to point across the Humber River through fields, across second creek to trails. Went okay but shoes were heavy after crossing river and with mega supports. Could not pick my feet up in the fields and should have gone by the roads used by DR and TD. Fell in the woods at the second creek. Crossed paths with Bash completing the back side of this O loop. Took it slowly to 7 as remembered getting lost here in last year's Ontario Relays Champs. Hit 7 okay and across hill to 8 but the way was slow as the many bike trails meant lots of map reference. Missed it still and had to correct from fields. Should has run trail around but again legs were not up to it. Followed fence and clearings to 9. JB popped out of the bush below the control, just as I was leaving it. Old map did not have new mowed trails. Some were clearings on the map. Ran clearings to 10 but got a little messed up at the bike trail but soon hit the control by bike path. Cross country using clearings to 11. A bit tricky as the control was at a large dead tree in the forest but quite distinct. Could not see the control until on top of the tree as it was in a crook of a fallen section. Long haul to 12 but by luck or smarts decided to take roads. Much faster than a direct line but my time was not much quicker for the shorter distance so it seems I am way too tired today. Uphill bearing to 12 skirting bike trails. Similarly to 13 but almost went down to an earlier depression before the swamp. Took lazy bearing to 14 but was off and had to correct, costing time. No legs to run in to 15 and finale.

Time was slow as joints were too weak from baseball but navigation was good. Sold on the Moscow thumb compass. Much better than the Brunton model, I also have. Great Day & Event !
