Orienteering race 1:12:34 [4] **** 3.5 km (20:44 / km) +160m 16:53 / km
spiked:4/11c slept:8.0 shoes: Adidas CornerBlitz

Eastern Canadian Championships at Lac Philippe. Bad start to this race, took hydro right of way to control 1 and walked right past it. Found other control but misinterperted its location and by the time the error was realized, had lost 10 minutes. Hit control but noticed it was just off my original course. Compass to 2 and hit it with slight end adjustment. Towards control 3 crossed swamp but did not correct enough on uphill and slide under control but backtracked to hit it, lost 5 minutes. Fall asleep on the next control. Was planning to go over hill, cross stream to hit control. Came to large swampy section and walked across, knee deep in beaver mud to hit trail. Then realized trail was running in the wrong direction. Took 3 minutes of map study to realize I had come down the hill to the north instead of the east. Ran trail to easy acess point to 4. Bearing and cliff reading to 5. WEnt over on right ankle but only momentary pain. Picked up a tail and ran into Glenn competely lost 20 m from 5. As Glenn started behind me, I did not want to give the control away but was too close. Three of us headed for 6 but there was many rocks and the exact one was difficult to ascertain. I ran to far to the north and realized the error when I hit the cliff above 7 and saw Sevastian running to it. I backtracked and Glenn pointed in the correct direction. However, the control was hit behind the rock and a tree and it was not evident until within 4 feet from my direction of approach. Back to 7 and downhill to the trail to 8. The male Logvins passed on another course. Hit 8, crashed the woods to 9 and trail to 10. 10 was up a hill and at small cliff. Many rocks in the area made finding the exact one difficult and wasted 2 minutes. Straight alone the beach to 11 and the finish.

Tough start to the ECOC's, though the plan was to try for a better long course result than in Cincinnatti. Nice day with temperature near 20°C by race finish, though it was 3°C, the previous night!!

Orienteering race 37:13 [5] **** 2.55 km (14:36 / km)
spiked:8/14c shoes: Adidas CornerBlitz

Sprint race in the afternoon. Temperature was warm so decided to run without long sleeves. Took a while to get into the race and different scale. Hit control 1 but Laszlo starting behind me was there first. Took a bearing to 2 but a sloppy approach. Road to 3 and just off trail was easy. Took road through store parking lot to 4 just off a trail and stream crossing. Bearing to 5 and used knoll to spike. Same to 6 with easy reference knoll. Passed a gentleman in my class between 3 and 6. Angled to road and ran to 7. Crossed rough open and stream towards 8 and made a catastropic error. When straight instead of north and ended up in high hills with Ralph. Could hear the start line countdown but was brain dead for 5 minutes running back and forth on wrong hills. Finally realized error and hit 8 in a dense green section. Across the road and first right into campground and used washroom path to hit 9. Back to campground road and through bush crossing beaver dam to road crossing uphill to 10. Came across Peter Sr. & Ilona Dobos in tight competition. Both were on the course, one less than mine. Hit 11 and meet them again at 12 as Serghei Logvin came flashing by. Tailed Serghei to 13 but he got away and I had to make a slight correction to 14. Streaked for the finish with Pat de St. Croix in front. Reached finish at the same time and we did a Laurel & Hardy before punching separate boxes.

Slow to start this race and the one major error was inexcusable. Ottawa Senators won in overtime just as I had finished downloading thanks to Alfredson. The locals were elated!!

Note
slept:8.0

Left Mississauga at 11:45 am for the drive to Ottawa. Just before Trenton, came to a dead stop and sat there for 2 hours. Two traffic fatalities ahead had closed the 401. Back up to speed, I knew it would be tight to make the 8 pm campground entry deadline. Had one fuel stop and ate one power bar and got to the Gatineau Lac Philippe campground at 7:45 pm just behind Ralph. Others did not make it and slept in their car at the closed gate.

Orienteering (Control Retrieval) 1:50:00 [0] **** 7.0 km (15:43 / km)
spiked:7/10c slept:6.75 shoes: Salomon XA Pro

Hard Rock O-race. Did the SI work for this race for GHO. Hammer & Sudden set and put out the controls. Bash and 'Bent did registration and TD picked up vital gear. Nick won in an excellent time against assorted other top level competition. The foliage was flushing and control retrieval was quite difficult. I went on a bearing and generally would get to the location and have to slowfully rotate to discern the flags. Had a less SI output issue which Sudden fixed afterwards.
Beautiful day to be walking in the Hinterland!!
