orienteering race 54:00 [5] 7.5 km (7:12 / km)
shoes: x-talon 212

Thought I'd better write up the relay, but won't bother with my other poor races.
was nearly the first person there in the morning. It looked as if Mace had only just climbed out of her tent. Meant I lost some sleep but meant no coffee line. Good ankle was pretty damn sore (but the one I boned in Finland felt good...) from the day before and was really feeling uneasy about a fast start, but the atmosphere was cool on the start line and was pumped up.
luckily there was no chance of fast running early, we had to push up that big hill! up and over and Simon and T. Rex Reynolds had disappeared, was with Olle Poland a bit. nailed the first one and headed off on my own, thinking Simon and Tom had already dropped me, but on the way to number 3 Simon appeared behind me (shooing some kangaroos towards me, which nearly bowled me over). Big confidence boost. together for a moment when the forking at #5 gave Simon the advantage towards #6 and a much better route choice (he opted for along/just lef of the ridgeline while i was almost straight).
made it to the spectator control on my own hearing Ben announce Simon's 3 minute lead over me (which he had accrued in a single leg). about here I got the numb feet which have plagued me recently, and the running speed dropped off, being unable to feel the ground at all. Started to really feel the heat too. got through the next couple clean enough (running with a Vic Nuggest runner I didn't recognize for a moment) but the climb to #9 was brutal. just slow and clean after that. relieved to hear I was the second back. Tagged Shep and he headed out with my parting advice that straight was probably faster (to his disgust, haha) and sat back to enjoy a storming run by all the cockies teams. Bloody tired.
