Orienteering race (Oceania Middle) 52:56 [4] 5.8 km (9:08 / km) +130m 8:12 / km

Brand new map of another sand dune area but with bigger dunes and same macrocarpa trees. We got to witness the best in the world earlier in the day struggle with terrain as 70% of the field stuffed up the spectator control.

Plan today was to ensure i checked my control codes more carefully today and have good attaclpoints. I achieved this on 15 of the 18 controls. made a 3min error on control 6 and lost a min or so on control 15.

Orienteering race (Osgiliath Wood) 1:41:09 [4] *** 10.9 km (9:17 / km)

MP today. Second last control i punched 145 instead of 149. I suspect the fatigue and fighting through the Macrocarpa trees lead to the error. My control was only 50m away as well :-(

Beautiful area but very physical as some areas had lots of fallen timber, other areas had really soft ground that the feet would sink 20cm into and then we had the notorious Macrocarpa trees that were virtually impenetrable. The sand dunes and beach section i enjoyed.

Reasonably clean navigation again today but unfortunately i forgot to take a gel with me which may have helped my concentration towards the end better. My time would have placed me third in M35a.

Orienteering race 1:16:01 [4] 10.7 km (7:06 / km) +90m 6:49 / km
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw 2012

Beautiful area for orienteering. My 3rd ever sand dune map. Had stressed to the kids to take the first control slowly to ensure they could settle into their run confidently. Took my own advice and cleanly picked up the my first 2 controls. Started making sense of the map and was having a great run until i switched off from 7 -8 and hit a track. Fortunately i knew where i was but failed to check my compass to ensure is was running in right direction. Probably ran 400-500m in wrong direction before i realise and had to recorrect myself.

Clean run through to 16 when the womens train came through and got towed a little way but unfortunately my lack of running fitness meant i couldnt hang on for long. Made the same error again on the way 10 18 but only 50m this time before i realised.

Surprised to finish 5th.
